A missed call does not show up with the number of missed calls by the phone icon

WWhen I get a message the number "1" shows up in the message (envelope) icon. Why doesn't a number appear by my phone icon? This used to happen which made it easy to see that I had a missed called instead of squinting to see the notification bar missed call.

There are no options provided in the settings of your phone to reflect the number of missed calls on that phone icon.

SusanMMastria, we don't want you to miss any important calls. Did you recently recieve a software update or switch devices? Which make/model phone do you have?

Thank you for responding. This missed call without notification on my phone

icon is making me consider changing phones. I have the Samsung Galaxy S4

and it is up to date with software. In fact, I don't recall seeing that

missed call for a while. Can you help me or do I need to upgrade? I'm not

due for an upgrade until January 2016.
