I have a contact that has an iphone with face time, but can't seem to connect with advanced calling...how can I make it work?

Simply not true.
iPhones can have Advanced Calling activated and initiate a video call between 2 different phones, both with Advanced Calling activated as indicated by the VZW rep. Both phones do not even need to be iPhones. An android device with Advanced Calling activated can have a video call with an iPhone with Advanced Calling activated.
There are even OTHER methods to "do a video call" with an Apple user such as Skype. You DO NOT need an Apple product to "do a video call" with an Apple user.:smileyhappy:
Face time uses data and nothing else. Doesn't matter you use AC or not. It's Apple own system. If you are having trouble connecting best to troubleshoot with Apple.
Good question, glennagnu. Both devices need to be using advanced calling, and you would initiate the video call once you're connected. Let me know if you have any other questions.

That would certainly depend if the iPhone in question has AC activated. IF the OP is using AC and wants to initiate a video call to the iPhone using AC, that iPhone must ALSO have AC activated. It is irrelevant that the iPhone has FaceTime if the OP is using AC and NOT FaceTime. Those are 2 separate and (currently)incompatible methods of communication.
There's also Skype, Google Hangouts, etc for those who want cross platform support and don't all use Verizon / Advanced Calling enabled phones.
Is video calling via Advanced Calling now available on the iPhone? I know it initially was not and it appears the facts still say it's not. Just curious if anyone has been successful using it without using FaceTime or a video calling app
