No Roll Over Data Penalizes Us

Verizon not having Roll Over like AT&T effectively means you can not use all your data due to fears of going over the limit.

With AT&T one develops an extra data buffer so to speak. Not with Verizon. And if you go over, it's $15 per extra GB.

This is really a big Verizon-Negative in my opinion. Would be nice if the FCC could intervene or maybe even Verizon would just 'do the right thing!'

This is a privilege ATT extended not a right for every customer. If you prefer ATT's plan, switch.

The only reason a carrier has for changing policy is if it hurts their bottom line.

The FCC will not do anything. Carriers makes their own plans and options. Your job as a consumer is to spend your money how you see fit. Don't like what Verizon offers switch to another carrier. If no carrier doesn't give you the options you want don't get service. If enough people in this country did this it would affect the industry more than fitting the bill and complaining about what coulda shoulda be done.

AT&T's roll over policy is not all that great, especially if you choose the data tier which is right for your needs.

Data rolls over for 1 month only. You use your allowance before any rollover data. Rolled over data will not roll over to another month.

For example:Data allowance = 10 GB

Month 1 - 9 GB usage = 1 GB rolled over to month 2

Month 2 - 7 GB usage = 7 GB used from your allowance, 3 GB rolled over to month 3, 1 GB from month 1 lost.

Month 3 - 10 GB usage = 10 GB used from your allowance, no data rolled over to month 4, 3 GB from month 2 lost.

Month 4 - 11 GB usage = 10 GB used from your allowance, 1 GB of overage charged to you.

Of course, you could always switch to Project Fi, where you are only charged for the data you actually use and refunded any cost for data you don't use. If you have a 1 GB($10/GB cost) allowance and only use 0.5 GB, you would be refunded $5 at the end of the month. If you use 1.5 GB, you would be charged an extra $5 at the end of the month.:smileyhappy:

T-mobile let's you roll over but the max you can hold is 10GB. Maybe they raised it recently to 20GB don't remember. Funny thing I only use that line at home where I have WiFi. So it's always full. When I am at work it is either AT&T or Verizon as T-mobile can't hold a candle in my work areas.

I have both but live in a rural area without broadband and use Verizon's Home Fusion Cantenna with 40gb Data. Some months I use 15-20 GB and others I have run over 40 GB (I usually have to unplug the Cantenna when I get close to 40)

Would be nice to have more flexibility in the plan. Currently I end up using only 35-38 GB max as I must unplug the Cantenna to avoid the risk of overcharges.

If not Roll Over, it would be nice to just have Data turn off when I hit 40, but that would not be in Verizon's interest either.

You pointed out the beauty of AT&T's plan. If you don't use the data on month 1, you can use it the following month.

You can manage your data in two ways:

My Verizon and My Verizon Mobile: Monitor your unbilled monthly data usage from the My Usage page

Usage Alerts: Set up usage alerts in My Verizon to send a notification when you're reaching your data limit. To set up a data alert:

Go to the Usage Alerts page in My Verizon.

Under the When to Alert section, scroll down to Data and select the alerts you'd like to receive.

Note: When a check mark appears above a percentage amount that indicates the alert has been turned on for that usage amount.

Click Save All Alerts.

IT is impossible for any carrier to shut off data at a particular point because of the way data is collected and reported by cell towers. Each time your phone connects to a cell tower it starts recording data use. It stops when you leave the tower area, connect to wifi or turn off the phone/mifi. It reports the use hours later in batches, frequently during non peak use hours.

It's like writing checks all over town. The checks don't take money from your bank balance until they are deposited or cashed by the payee, which could be much later than when you wrote the check. If the total of the checks exceeds your balance, your account is overdrawn.

You think it is a beauty, I tend to think it is a backhanded way to provide it without it being of much benefit. It is only beneficial if you alternate from months without overages to months with overages. If you don't, there is no benefit to it at all. Seeing as I have never had an overage, I would be in the camp that it does not provide a benefit.

Agreed! You would have to be paying for more than you need all the time to get any rollover when you need it.

No matter what carrier you have, the answer is to have a data plan that is large enough to cover your use.

I Bought a Nexus 6p, so I looked into Fi. It's coverage is questionable, and it wouldnt save me a dime because I use enough to data to rack up large charges. Basically, the per GB charge on my shared plan is much lower.

As I stated, my usage does vary month to month so having a roll over plan would be a huge benefit to me and many others.

I have both Verizon and AT&T accounts (both needed as I live in an area with no broadband and sometimes Verizon and sometimes AT&T are not working) and I can tell you the AT&T account is much easier to manage data on a monthly basis.

With Verizon, I never get to use my full 40 GB as I have to unplug beforehand to avoid overcharges (and yes, I have the 75% and 90% alert set.) I end up losing 3-5 GB monthly (so I really have a 35 GB plan!)

Maybe the FTC or FCC should look into this? Hope some day, Verizon will see to treating their customers better with service options that help

Does anybody else realize that the OP is asking for rollover on a Home Fusion account? AT&T doesn't offer this service, do they? Also, isn't the rollover that AT&T offers only available on the smartphone/tablet plans? They're two different services.

Thanks - glad someone is listening.

I have to keep both Verizon and ATT because 1. Sometimes one will go down and I'll have to use the other and 2. I don't have enough data on either plan to cover my needs (and I can't increase because I have a much cheaper plan that is no longer offered.)

I do wonder if a smart lawyer could file a class action suit against Verizon because the way they have it set up now makes it very difficult to use one's whole data allotment.

Good luck with that. You can not sue over what a business offers because another business offers something different. That's like me suing McDonald's because they don't sell Hershey pies like Burger King does...

ATT does sell mifi, but it's hardly equal to home fusion.

JUst because sprmankalel was listening, does not mean the argument has wheels. It does not.

download a data meter or figure out how to manage your use to get the most out of it.

You still pay for a full glass of wine, even if you don't finish it....

To Tidbit:Would you be able to sue McDonalds if they only let you eat half the hamburger? Or charged you extra if they left a second hamburger on your plate and you only ate a crumb?

To MarcusS_VZW: The problem with Verizon's newer plans is they cost twice as much as the older plans.

To mama23dogs: It would be better customer service if Verizon came up with a solution for my problem. They haven't.

You agreed to pay for that amount of data to use in that billing cycle and Verizon agreed to give you that amount of data in that billing cycle, so, seems legit.

I had AT&T for a few years their roll over is just a marketing pitch. Myself and most people I knew at the time never ended up using the roll over basically because you already choose a plan that was more than adequate for what you'd need.

Data I just roll into Xfinity because of the speed it brings to the iPhone. Here's Verizon's current reading on a iPhone 6s Plus 128GB. 5 days left in your usage cycle - 0.028 GB of 2 GB (1%) and that is with extensive use.

The thing is that we are talking about the OP's home service provided by VZW.

The OP wants to compare Verizon's home service offering to AT&T's mobile service offering and you cannot compare the 2.

Aside from that, the OP is mad at VZW, the only company offering some type of high speed home service, where he should really be targeting the local government or not allowing any other companies to come in and lay the foundation to provide the home services that people in larger cities and suburban area have.

It might not be the local government preventing landline internet services in the OP's area but the Internet providers themselves as they don't want to spend the money to increase their infrastructure.

All I want is to be able to use my full 40 GB without risk of Verizon's exorbitant overage charges ($15 for 1 GB!)

My problem would be solved if Verizon had a roll over plan like AT&T or if Verizon would just turn off the data when I hit 40 GB (this should be technically easy as they know how to throttle accounts after certain levels of usage.)

Help from the FCC, FTC or even a class action law suit are long shots as is the possibility that VerizonFios or one of the cable companies would bring broadband to my house.

So I'm stuck with paying 4-6 time what most people pay for home broadband and have to deal with Verizon's ridiculous data limits which besides being expensive, many times doesn't work (another topic for another day.)

Please understand that the community is not trying to be harsh with you. We are just trying to help you see why what you're asking for is not possible.

I have already said that it's a shame that VZW's Home Fusion is the only option that you have for high speed internet.

We hope that you can figure out a way to make it work for you.

AGreed. According the the Net Neutrality document about 40% of Americans have no other access to Internet other than via mobile devices. That's huge. And ridiculous. We should have broadband coast to coast, north and south.

Att is talking about the 5G network going online this year. But where is broadband?
