gmail has stopped working

I have the Motorola Droid Turbo 2 that requires a gmail account. I have started getting the message "Unfortunately gmail has stopped working" MANY times daily. I have cleared cache, uninstalled updates, etc. but nothing works. I have not tried a factory reset and hope not to have to. Has anyone else encountered this and had any success solving it? VERY ANNONYING.

It's showing up randomly. Password hasn't been changed, not affecting the play store at all.
