Will HD voice (VoLTE) calls handoff to wifi calling?

I know if I am on a call on my iPhone 6 using HD voice (VoLTE) and lose LTE coverage, the call drops (no handoff from LTE to 3G/CDMA calls). But what about moving from LTE coverage to 3G-only but with a viable wifi signal for VZW Wi-Fi coverage? Will the call hand off to HD voice over Wi-Fi?

Some misinformation in the replies so far:

There is handoff between HD voice (aka VoLTE) and wifi calling in both directions. HD voice does not use much data, and doesn't use any of your plan data. It is also given highest priority so calls will work on a crowded network. You need to have HD Voice for wifi calling to work on Verizon. When on wifi call, the call is at HD Voice quality.

HD voice will not work on a Wi-Fi network HD voice is voice over data but unfortunately you cannot use Wi-Fi and quite frankly HD voice uses a substantial amount of data

John this is a very good question. I am glad that you are using the HD calling feature, it's looking to be feature of the future. I will provide some more insight to this question:

No, calls won't switch between 3G and 4G LTE networks. If your call starts on the 3G network and you move to a 4G LTE coverage area, your call will continue as a 3G/CDMA call. However, if your call starts on the 4G LTE network and you move to a non-4G coverage area, your call will drop. This rule also applies to switching to a strong Wi-Fi connection. Thanks for the info, I will do an experiment next time I go to my office building (LTE is fine in the parking lot, but drops when I enter the building).

RalphT_VZW, the link you posted is to an Android help article. Do you have a link to an iPhone article on HD voice/wi-fi calling? (This is an Apple forum, after all!)

I would love to see official documents that show plan data is not used. I have been told exactly gym the opposite by multiple phone support reps. And my usage feel to that when my talk time increase. I doubt Verizon held of on wifi calling 7+ years with no reason. If as they claim it was R&D, they are going to get that back somehow. If not in confusion of charging for international calling fees alone.

There are no data charges for HD Voice. I have used it extensively for the last 2 months & have used less than 1 gig total for the entire month.

Thanks for the clarification on the LTE to Wi-Fi handoff Weth. Have you been able to make that part of the handoff successfully?

HD voice call do not use your data. It uses voice minutes. If you use video calling with HD voice, the video uses data, but the audio portion does not.

HD Voice and Video Calling are available only when both parties are using HD Voice-enabled phones and are connected to a compatible 4G LTE network, or on Wi-Fi if Wi-Fi Calling is enabled. HD Voice and Video Calling on the 4G LTE network are billed according to your voice calling plan. In addition, data usage and any applicable data charges apply to Video Calls.

I did an experiment today at my office.

tl;dr: calls hand-off between Wi-Fi calling and LTE with only a momentary glitch, no call drop.

We get LTE coverage at the windows but not at the interior of the building. WiFi is fine throughout the building. iPhone 6 is set to enable LTE for voice and data.

I set my iPhone 6 to airplane mode, turned on Wi-Fi, and after getting "VZW Wi-Fi" in the status bar, placed a call. While the call was connected, I walked to the window, put the phone into normal mode, waited for signal bars to show up, and turned off Wi-Fi. The phone call switched to voice over LTE without a drop, just a momentary audio glitch.

Then while on the call over LTE, I turned WiFi back on ("Verizon" still showed in status bar), and walked to the center of the building where we have no LTE coverage (only 3G). The phone switched display to "VZW Wi-Fi" and another momentary audio glitch, then the call continued (no drop).
