How can you go over data when you have your data restricted below the allowance?!

This problem is pretty black and white. So I call bull.
I have a 250MB limit. I have it restricted on my phone at 249MB. The bill for this month says I went 2MB over and I am charged $15! My phone states otherwise. My phone states I have used 249MB. The data is turned off because 249MB is where I have it restricted at to turn off. I don't think Verizon is a trustworthy company. As if they really need the money, yet they are so quick to charge someone for miraculously going over their data. This company is just a bunch of crooks.

Ensuring that you’re billed correctly is a must, sarkatpre. I too would be concerned being billed an overage when using a feature to restrict my usage after a certain amount. I understand that you are using the built-in data limit feature on your phone. Typically there is a disclaimer using this feature as data calculations may differ from what our network records reflect. As sprmankalel mentioned a 1MB buffer isn’t a lot. A picture text message would use more than 1MB of data to send or receive.

VZW data reporting is not real time. So if you are using data and when you start you are at 245MB and use 8MB, by the time the tower reports it, you have already gone over.

I don't know exactly what plan you are on but it seems like you are paying

$20 for 250MB

$20 for line

$5 for Family Base

Seems for $10 more a month you could get the 2GB plan that has carryover data and safety mode. When enabled Safety Mode will slow your data speeds down but not charge extra for going over.

Newer phones and software use more data than older, slower phones. A 250 mb plan insufficient for current smartphones.

To me that makes sense but not when I have it restricted at 249MB. It shuts

off when it reaches that limit. If the restriction feature on my phone

still allows overage than what is the point in having it turned on? Oye

It shuts off when your account has been updated and you are at 249MB. However, as I explained, if you are at 243 and you use 8 it will updated at a later time thus letting you go over.

Usage is not update in real time.

As stated, it is near real time, but not real time. You are only giving a 1 MB buffer which is not nearly enough. 250 MB is a miniscule amount of data in 2017. Generally at least a 10 MB buffer is needed, and even that cuts it close.

As stated you are on an old plan, it is very small amount of data, and watching to not go over that small amount of data is a headache.

Since you are paying at least $45 for your current plan with only 250 MB of data, it seems like a no brainer to switch to the prepaid single line plan with 2 GB for $40. This comes with no overages, as once you hit 2 GB it will switch to a safety mode, slow down the data, but not cause an overage charge. If you don't use the 2 GB one month, the leftover will carryover for the next 1 month. No family base needed. Seems like a no-brainer change if you are single line. If you are not single line, give us the details and we can advise you on better ways to keep your costs low and manage your data.

Yes, I am on a single plan. I've looked into switching but it adds the

additional cost to my plan, thus only increasing it. I may be doing

something wrong when I try to switch. This 250 is a headache. I remember at

one time I had zero problems. I never went over data. Lately it has been a

problem. I don't like being charged an extra 15 for a small overage. Who

would though?

Regardless, if switching would save me money and not increase my plan to a

ridiculous amount, I'd like to look into switching to the 2GB.

You can do that online (I am not from Verizon, just a customer like you).

I would call customer service to switch from post paid to pre paid. The only time this won't work is if you are still in contract (this will trigger a ETF charge) or if you have a device payment plan (this will trigger paying off the remainder of the payment plan)
