how to power off phone when touch screen is broken

I just broke my screen and can't power off my phone since the screen is unresponsive. How do I turn off my phone. I've tried just holding the button, but it doesn't power off. I have apps running that are racking up data charges. Help!

Never mind - I just took the battery out. Problem solved --
