Lost contacts after installing FB messenger

After installing FB messenger all my contacts disappeared.  I assumed they were in the cloud, so I ran backup assistant only to have it backup 8 out of the 350 contacts I had before.  Next I uninstalled FB messenger, but contacts were still gone.  My online account also only shows 8 contacts.  Are the rest deleted?  Is there anyway to get them back?

I know I rely on my contacts and would be lost without them. I'm very concerned to hear those just disappeared like that. What phone do you have? If you check the deleted section of your Cloud on the web site does anything show there? Could they have been backed up anywhere else such as to your Gmail account?
