I deleted a contact and all the saved text messages with that contact went away too. is there anyway to recover them

If you have synced the data before, you can recover from the backup file. If not, I think you should not add more data to your device anymore. Try some professional recovery methods, like diskdigger or MobiKin Android Recovery , you can also try third-party data recovery programs.
