When the modem is plugged into my laptop, should it be listed as an available network on my I-phone?
A USB modem is not a wifi hotspot. When it is plugged into you laptop, it is only a direct connection to the laptop. You would need to know how to route the internet through to your laptop wifi radio. Or get a wifi router that lets you plug in a USB cellular modem.
