I uploaded an update from Samsung or Verizon and then was no longer able to receive notification of a text message on my lock screen. How do I get notified of a text when phone is locked?

Can somebody please help me?  I uploaded an update from either Verizon of Samsung and I am now no longer able to get notified on my lock screen when I receive a text message.  How do I set phone up so that I can be notified on the lock screen when I receive a text?
