I have an older model iPad and when it indicated there was a software update, I accepted. For two days now my iPad has been "Verifying Update" and it won't let me do anything; not even shut down. What can I do?
Restart it via this method: Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
I've had devices get stuck in an update before. I'd try to power cycle by turning it off / on again. Then see if you can go to Settings > General > Software Update to see if it will re-start. You can also try to plug it into a computer (PC or Mac) with iTunes on it to perform the update via that method.
It won't allow me to turn it off.
Teestuff, it’s important to make sure your devices are working as they should on the latest software update available. I’m sorry to hear that you’re having issue updating your iPad. You can follow Apple’s instructions on updating to the latest iOS version here. http://apple.co/2bodDXo

Just a tip, since the above poster described how to hard reboot the device, which should work. iPhones and iPads like to get stuck at "Verifying Update..." if they lose network connectivity during the verification process. Make sure your Internet connection is stable before the device reboots. Once it reboots to the Apple logo with the progress bar, it doesn't matter at that point if your connection isn't working.
If the update still has issues installing, try connecting it to a computer with iTunes, and updating the iPad using iTunes. Update the iOS software on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
I turned the device off and held down the shut down button for several seconds. Not sure what this did but it worked. Back up and running (whew!).
