Spy Whizz, etc claim they can 'hack' into Verizon android phones?

I have seen at least 3 separate apps that claim to be able to get into someones Verizon android phone with a cell # only. They say they can do this w/o the person ever touching or having possession of the phone. I've also seen several youtube videos explaining this in great detail. Is this possible w/o someone physically handling the phone and installing spyware? I searched on here but couldn't find any info on it. thx

They might be referring to the large amount of vulnerabilities which go unpatched on Android phones, once their life cycle has completed. After a couple of years, many Android phones stop receiving the security updates which would prevent remote compromise. This person might be talking about some of the SMS Bugs, such as Stagefreight, which have plagued many Android phones in the past couple of years.
