Service provider needed for dial up?

Im confused and how dial up works now-a-days. I moved to the sticks and im stuck with either payin $80 for sattelite internet or $25 for dial up. Back when I had it you needed a phone service and a internet provider. So If i get the Unlimited Local Calling service would I need to pay for a provider? Couldnt I just use the Microsoft dial up program to log on the internet and Explorer to surf the net? I currently do not have a LAN line and if I had to, it would be for internet use 95% of the time. I have local access numbers to dial from, but I dont know if the unlimited local calling plan is any good for dial up.

Yes, you need an ISP service such as AOL, Netscape, Copper, Toast, ISP.com or any of the others. The one you pick might depend most of all on the selecttion of local access numbers. If your town, city, or area is one where a LOCAL dial up number for for the ISP's modem is provided, you can go ahead and get the service, usually on a trial basis. If you cannot find a big name dialup ISP with local phone numbers for your rural area, then you have a problem. You could then shop locally and see if the nearest cities have a business which do provide LOCAL numbers for a dial up ISP. That's whole issue is the biggest problem, often. Current prices of the big companies now are pretty good, from about $5 dollars to 9.95, and up. I have Netscape and it's fine. I pay 6.95. But, I live in a town where Netscape has local access numbers. That's the important thing. Yes, you can use the Windows Dialer to dial a phone number including a modem's number but it won't do you you any good when you reach it. After you get an ISP's account, use Dial Up Networking (that's what it's called in my version of Windows) to set up the special Windows dialer for an ISP Account. I think I'd stay away from the services which require you to use an IE Browser toolbar like Netzero and those, if possible. Try Netscape, Copper, Toast, and ISP.com first, I'd suggest, unless you need a local company for local dialup numbers.

(let me tell you, this Verizon web site is absolute agony on dialup.)
