problems sending email - what authentication is needed??

I use Eudora to manage my email. Today, Eudora can receive email sent to{edited for privacy}, but cannot send email from {edited for privacy}. The error message is:

"error transferring your mail. I Said: MAIL FROM:<{edited for privacy}> and then the SMTP server (outgoing.verizon.net) said: 550 5.7.1 Authentication Required"

What is happening, and how do I deal with it??

I think I may have found an answer. There appears to be a bug on some versions of Ipswitch Imail SMTP server when handling autnenication using CRAM-MD5.. As described by one Eudora developer:

"When the SMTP client gives the "AUTH CRAM-MD5" command, the IMail server returns a
challenge that is not CRLF-delimited. Thus, the SMTP client hangs waiting
for the CRLF to signal the end of the challenge. Eudora does indeed
timeout after a while."

It may be that some Verizon SMTP servers use Imail or have a similar bug. The problem is intermittent because your messages don't always go to to the same server. If you instruct Eudora not to use CRAM-MD5 it will use another method that will not have this issue.

The solution is to add the following line to Eudora.ini in the section labelled [Settings]:

SmtpAuthBanished=CRAM-MD5

I tried this and the authenticaion errors stopped. Then I changed the file back and the errors started again. Returned to the edited INI file and the errors stopped. I tested with about 15 test mesages each time so I don't think it is coincidence.

If you try this please post whether it works or not for you.

TIPS: Depending on your email application, you may need to turn off Secure Password Authentication and, if applicable, make sure your Authentication method is set to “Password” or “Normal password.” In addition, you may need to restart your device for these new settings to take effect and for your email to continue working properly.

I am having the same problem as clampguy when sending mail using Eudora with Verizon. This just started to be a problem a couple of weeks ago. Prior to that everything worked fine. When I send mail I get a "550.5.7.1 authentication required" error message and the mail does not send. If I try several times it eventually goes through, although I am concerned that may not always happen in the future.

I have all the correct settings as posted by JOSEm441. I have had these settings for several months but the problem only started recently.

Does anyone know the answer to this problem? Thanks!

There is another thread about this problem--see "Send e-mail, intermittent authentication error"--outlining the same sort of problem you guys are having.

I started having problems with Eudora (version 7.1, Win7/Pro) just a few days ago. I checked my settings in Eudora and nothing has changed since I made the changes required when Verizon changed their server ports months ago. I don't think the problem is on our end but on the Verizon end.

I've found that generally if, after I've received the authentication error, I open Eudora's "Out" box, double click on the problematic email it will open again so that I can click on the "Send" button and usually it will successfully send--sometimes I have to try it a 3rd time but usually, the 2nd try successfully sends.

Where are you guys located? I'm in the Washington, DC metro area (VA) and ge_315 is in upstate NY so it doesn't appear to be confined to one area--except possibly the east coast.

I have had exactly the same experience. Use Eudora, has worked with Verizon for years. A week or so ago keeps giving me the 550 5.7.1 authentication required message. I have to resend three or four times till it goes through. So far, no one seems to know the answer to this Verizon created problem.

I'm having the exact same problem you guys are having. It started September 25th. I use Eudora 7.1 and Windows XP and am in metropolitan DC (Maryland). Has anybody been able to contact Verizon? (I haven't figured out how to contact Verizon.) Is it happening only to Eudora users?

I'm having the same issue, for about a week now. I use Eudora 7 and WIndows 7 and get the 550 5.7.1 everytime. It takes at least two, usually more, tries to send an email. I'm in DC area. Mu husband has no problems sending emails with Outlook.

I changed my email settings as requested by Verizon a while ago, and didn't have any problems at that point.

I don't have any problems with Thunderbird either so I think whatever the problem is, it is confined to Eudora.

Since late last night (Weds), I've not gotten the authentication error for the 3-4 emails I've sent from Eudora and I hope it continues to work. I think it's a problem on the Verizon end not on our end. and it may be confined to the east coast--another user with the same problem and using Eudora is in upstate NY and I'm in VA (DC metro area)...

NB: WhoIs shows my server (206.46.232.100) as being in Carrollton TX. I suspect that's where all of VZ's mail server(s) are.

I have been getting SMTP errors for the past few days in the Baltimore-Washington area. I doubt that it has anything to do with Eudora, which I am not using. Sometimes it seems to me that Verizon has difficulty running mail servers. I have had other problems in the past, and they have eventually straightened themselves out. BTW, I only get an error on the first send try; if I resend immediately after the first fails, it goes through OK. Otherwise, maybe I would be more upset with things than I am.

Looking in my log file, I am getting the kind of failure you describe, though it seems my program then tries a different authentication scheme and succeeds. Here is a log excerpt:

Mentioned many times is that passwords need to be plain, in the clear but the connection needs to be ssl/tls. So the use of cram-md5 should be disabled within Eudora.

Very interesting. That worked for me. I can't believe that Verizon suddenly started using Imail servers from circa 2000, though. The authentication problem didn't appear until 7-10 days ago after using Verizon FiOS and DSL for many years before that without this issue. I wasn't able to telnet in to smtp.verizon.net to see what they are using.

EDIT: I apologize that I did not see the "fix" suggested in the thread before posting. But, I am happy to report that the fix does indeed work! Thank you all.

I also use Eudora 7.1 (Paid) and have for many years. Win 7 Pro. I have had the intermittent sending issue which was a bit of a pain but after once or twice the email would send. (I have not had that issue the past month or so).

Beginning yesterday (8/1/14) I could not send emails no matter how many times I tried. (Receive works). No settings have changed, nothing has changed. I'm using the proper servers and ports and SSL alternate port, and I'll say it again, prior to yesterday, everything worked fine. I turned off security, turned on security. No luck.

I have the same issue on my work computer as well as my home computer. I setup my account on outlook 2003 and it works fine. Come back to Eudora and I get the same message that authentication is required 550 5.7.1.

Like most of the people that use Eudora, we want to continue to use Eudora. This issue appeared suddenly, and has not resolved itself as of 9:17 am dst, 8/2/14. I doubt there is a solution to be had on our end as I can't think of any option to change that would make it work. I believe this has to be resolved on Verizon's end for us Eudora users. If I am wrong and someone knows of a fix, please advise. Thanks!

I am having the same problem sending email from Eudora. When did the outgoing port change and why were we not notified? I have tried everything to change the port to 465, but I can't. This is important as I use this as my work email program. If I cannot get help, I guess I will have to bite the bullet and change to Cox Cable internet.

Hopefully someone will see this at the end of this long comment stream. I am happy that the proposed solution (altering the CRAM-MD5 line in the eudora.ini file) works for Windows users, but I am a Mac OSX Eudora 6.2.4 user, and there is no eudora.iu.i fole. Does anyone have any suggestions?

It's interesting that there's a gap in this thread from 10/25/13 to 8/1/14. I noticed the problem at 5am Brooklyn, NY time today (8/2/14). I think I fixed it. I went to Program Files(x86)/Qualcomm/Eudora. Saw a file called "deudora" with no extension but type "Configuration settings." I added the magic line: SmtpAuthBanished=CRAM-MD5, and it seems that I can once again send mail. My thanks to the previous contributors to this thread -- and no thanks at all to Verizon.

I suddenly experienced the authentication problem on Friday evening. I still have it this morning. I tried the suggested patch and my error message went from:

550 5.7.1 Authentication required.

550 5.7.1 Authentication is required to send mail as <{edited for privacy}>

I have no idea who <{edited for privacy}> is. Any ideas?

8.2.2014: I have the same issue, all of a sudden yesterday morning I lost the ability to send messages using Eudora 7, my email client. All of my email settings are whatVerizon says they should be and I've verified that it is accessing the SMTP outbound server via port 465. The Eudora security screen says it "succeeded" in its last SSL connection. Anyone have any ideas? I really don't want to have to use the on-line webmail option.

For anyone else reading this who is trying to resolve the same issue, you may need to grant yourself access permission to modify this file as I did. It's fairly straightforward.

Here in the northern Los Angeles area, our problem started 8/1/14. For the prior 2 weeks, Verizon reps have been knocking on our door, trying to get us to switch from DSL to FIOS, which we turned down. Then this problem started. We thought it might be Verizon getting revenge on us.

We now suspect that Verizon very recently changed their local area server(s) or system in order to "roll-out" FIOS in our area, and that their change(s) caused this problem to appear. Perhaps the East Coast people had a similar roll-out last year. At any rate, muchas gracias to the genius(es) who figured this out.

We got the following notification in Brooklyn: "We are currently moving some customer accounts to a new billing system. Between August 1st-3rd...." I don't know if there's any connection between that and the email authentication problem or if it's just a coincidence.

I am having the same problem. It is August 2, 2014. I use Eudora 7.1. I can receive messages but not send them as I get the authentication error message: ("550.5.7.1 Authentication required"). Can someone please help us? By the way, the earlier comments were on the east coast. I am in Texas.

Thank you so much. I'm in southwest Virginia (for those who think this is a regional problem). I too had the "authentication required" error intermittently, but then it went away until today, when I've been unable to send any outgoing email through the Verizon smtp server. Your addition to the deudora.ini file did the trick. Thank you, thank you, thank you! I would switch from Eudora, but Thunderbird doesn't have the same level of functionality and Outlook is too slow.

GREAT!!!! That line did the trick.

Amazing that Verizon "Expert" Tech Support swears up and down that I am the only Eudora user because no other Verizon customers have this problem.

So far today their solution for this email situation is to drop Eudora and go with Microsoft Outlook - who they work with.

And for my not being able to load Verizon In-Home Agent...but a new computer.

I need to check this forum more often.

Thank you SO much. This worked. It wasn't that easy to change the deudora.ini file because even though I was logged on to my computer as the administrator, Eudora didn't agree with me. However, by using some work-arounds, I made it work, and now I can both send and receive using my much preferred Eudora platform!!!!!

I have the same problem. I have gone even further. I have contacted verizon tech support twise once before I reinstalled outlook 2010 and once after. i still have the same probvlem. This problem just started occurring a few weeks ago. Has anything changed at Verizon with their Servers security. I recently upgraded to the new DVR and got a new Wi FI modem/router. could that have something to do with it. I am really at a loss what to do.
