LTE coverage with iPhone 6

New iPhone 6 and my first 4G capable device....

So when the phone shows "Verizon" by the signal strength instead of "LTE", does that mean I'm on 3G? I'm in the metrowest Boston area, right on the high-tech Rt 95/128, smack dab in the middle of a sea of LTE coverage, according to the maps. How come I can only sometimes see LTE? Is there some setting I need to turn on/off?

Take a look under

Settings-cellular-Enable LTE

Make sure it shows as "Green" then its on.

At the same time make sure cellular data is showing "Green"

Thanks for the reply. Yep everything's on. A big duh, for me...I was worried about the fact that the "LTE" icon wasn't always shown at the top. That's because the Wi-Fi signal bar replaces it when connected to an access point. I shut off wi-fi and voila....there's "LTE"

Follow up question, just for my understanding. Is the signal strength different between LTE and 3G at any given location? Because I put a Verizon 4S right beside a Verizon iPhone 6. The 4S shows 5 bars 3G signal. The 6 shows 2 dots LTE signal.

Yes depending on the device and its capabilities (3G or 4G LTE) the symbols will show differently.

However it can change due to others factors on any device from 4G LTE, 4G, 3G, 1x all the way down to edge.

Depending on the phone model and service area.

Its the same on all carriers.
