Can't access / setup visual voicemail on Droid Maxx

Bought a Droid Maxx to replace an aging iPhone 4 and set everything up and all was working well. A few days ago visual voice mail quit working and any attempt to access it or set it up again puts me in a mobius loop of either "Visual Voicemail is being set up wait 5 minutes before accessing.." or and endless loop of " Visual Voicemail is being setup...". Neither function completes and when attempting to "manually" access my voicemail it says the mailbox number is not valid. What the...? Any ideas?

Did you setup the voicemail again after switching from the iPhone? The voicemail system used on the iPhone is different from the rest of the Verizon Wireless phones.

Yes. I setup Basic Visual Voice mail on the new phone and it was working well for several weeks. Now it just quit and thinks it needs to update something but just gets in a unending loop when it tries to update.
