Being asked to return internet equipment I do not have?

I decided to change to Verizon one day after having a dispute with my current internet provider. I ordered service one morning and was contacted by my current internet provider and they resolved my price issue so I decided to stay with them. I immediately canceled my service with Verizon before it even started before I received any equipment before I did anything. A week or so later I got a phone call from a woman from Verizon wanted to know if I need any help setting up the equipment. I explained to her that I had canceled the order and she said okay that's fine and she said she would note it or something.... at that point I thought this was resolved. A couple weeks  later I got a text saying if I don't set up my equipment soon my service would be canceled? Of course I have no service.. I have no equipment. Fast forward another week or so I get an email saying my service is canceled please return the equipment or pay $200? I wasted a whole morning on my day off trying to call several times... their automated service is a joke if your number is not in their system they just hang up on you what a  company.. anyway I went to chat which was a whole other nightmare and after waiting another half hour thought I had everything resolved and the woman told me to hang on after she said she had straightened everything out .. she was going to connect me to another department which I didn't need to waste another hour of my morning but I waited.. and then I was just cut off the chat was over and there was no transferring.. I assume she just took care of it.. anyway the next day I get a box from Verizon with labels to send back my equipment that I of course don't have.. you can't get through on the phone.. the chat is a joke and I'm not paying for equipment I never got.. I never had service.. it's just ridiculous.. now I will never buy anything from Verizon I assume I'm going to get some nasty emails soon maybe some phone calls who knows what they're going to do send it to collections what a  company I had them for cable at one point I was so happy to get out from under some  contract now I have to fight with them over something that should have been over a month ago I will never do business with this company again.. if anything that pertains to this hurts my credit I'm going to the news.. I'm going to make such a production of this.. this has been nothing but a big headache for me for no reason what's wrong with these people? What kind of operation is this?
