DNS resolver latency...

Have had Verizon 5G home internet now for about 3 weeks.  Overall,  it's been a decent experience.  However, have noticed at times extremely slow page loads, and even only partial page loads unless I perform a page refresh after the initial inquiry.  Did some sleuthing, and came to the conclusion that the Verizon DNS servers are the culprit.  If I change the DNS address on my devices to say Cloudflare, the overall web performance goes back to normal.  I would like to change my CR200A gateway to Cloudflare, but can't figure out how to do that.  On the gateway web page I've looked everywhere.  Any help would be great!

Unfortunately, I do not believe the firmware allows for setting custom DNS servers to be issued over DHCP.

This leaves two solutions:

  • Configure the client devices to use the third-party DNS
    • This also allows for implementing encrypted DNS connections if your OS supports it (e.g., Windows 11).
  • Use your gateway as a bridge to another router (IP Passthrough Mode) and have that router perform DHCP for the clients

Important Note:  By using the above solutions, client devices won't be able to see/use the "mynetworksettings.com" domain that is used for LAN-based DNS resolution by the clients. All device are reachable on the LAN by their name in the default config., as the gateway itself is only DNS server provided to the clients (e.g., clientPC.mynetworksettings.com).

Thanks for the reply.  For a few days recently, surfing was fine but went down hill again today.  Simply changing the DNS resolver on my devices fixes the slowness.  Guess I'm gonna have to switch the Verizon gateway to bridge mode like suggested, and use my older Eero router,  where I can set th DNS servers manually.   Not sure why Verizon can't figure this out;  but I'm unwilling to spend another hour and half on the horn having them tell me to reboot my gateway, or unplug my gateway, or turn off/on all my devices.  Ugh!!

Starting thinking again last night and decided to try something different.  Instead of changing the devices' DNS addresses,  I decided to turn off IPv6  on the Verizon gateway, and, that appears to have worked.  Cross my fingers ...

Great idea! I have run into IPv6 name resolution with other ISPs, but not with Verizon 5G Home Internet before.

I'm glad you found an even easier workaround to the issue and I hope it is persistent.

So far, operating the gateway in IPv4 mode only has proven effective!!
