Port Verizon landline to Verizon Wireless

Hello,

We have a Verizon landline on very, very old copper. Verizon has informed us they will not be replacing the old copper lines, which break just about every time there's a storm. The sound quality is never good, and gets worse when it rains. Verizon is also not going to run Fios or DSL or anything from this century into our rural area.

So, what does it take to port our landline number to a cell phone? I don't want to replace my current cell number, but I have a spare phone I could activate to port the number to. What are the steps?

This is a great question. Porting your number to a cell phone is a very easy process. All you need to do is provide the the account information for your landline, and we can move the number to a wireless device. Do you have any wireless service currently? ~Peter

We don't want to replace the cell numbers we already have, simply to add our landline number to a different mobile device. I assume I can activate my old cell phone, and then port the landline number to it?

Since you want to port a Verizon landline to a Verizon mobile number, there shouldn't be an issue with moving the line to mobile since it's all the same carrier. Sometimes, when you are trying to convert a landline from one provider to a mobile number with a different provider, there's a red tape problem, but it's a rare occurrence.

If one of your current cell phones has 2 SIM or eSIM slots, you could put the landline onto the 2nd slot of your current phone. Voicemails might be a little strange because I think all voicemails want to go to the same bucket so to speak on a dual-SIM phone.

Using an older cell phone for the landline port might work, but it depends on how old the phone is, as once a phone is obsoleted by the manufacturer, you can't get any more software updates, or it may not work well with current network technology. However, if you just want a basic call and texting device and don't care about using apps or whether or not you get 5G service (since the number is a landline and doesn't get texts or internet access as is right now), a 4G capable phone will be OK.

Actually, we just saw Verizon Wireless's offer for a second line on an existing mobile account. We'll be porting it to the eSim on an iPhone 13.
