I have spent over six hours (literally - no kidding) over the period of two days trying to get a number ported to Verizon for my mother in law.  You can't believe how stressful it is for her as a recent widow not to be able to receive incoming calls.  Verizon staff seem both ill trained and ill equipped to most efficiently deal with this issue.  Now on day 4 they keep telling me to just wait "a little longer" and all will be good.  Really?

Hi, have you contacted the old carrier to make sure there isn't something going on with them which would cause them to hold the number?  It really shouldn't take more than 48 hours to get a port to go through.  There is a rare instance with some POTS lines ("plain old telephone service" i.e. a landline plugged into a wall jack service) where it is not possible to port the line.  Otherwise the only other thing I can think of, and hopefully this isn't the case, is if the person doing the port just totally messed it up and ported the number into the void.
