I have already updated the Messaging+ app and unchecked the auto-emoji option, but whenever I send or receive ":)" it comes back as an emoji. Can anyone assist me with this?
hstegall, I apologize if the emoji function is not a setting you'd like enabled. In review of all features and settings for the Keyboards, it doesn't have one to disable them. Have you tried changing the Keyboard input completely? AdaS_VZWFollow us on Twitter at @VZWSupport
Are you referring to the Swipe and Samsung Keyboard input options?
We want you to have the best option that is right for your needs! We were referring to the few different keyboards on by default like Swipe and Samsung Keyboard. There is also a variety of keyboard options also available through the Google Play Store.Thank you,YaleK_VZW Follow us on Twitter @VZWsupport
I have used multiple keyboard inputs and applications however whenever I send or receive ":)" it's automatically converted into an emoji, despite whatever settings I have enabled or disabled.
Has anyone else been able to send/receive these smileys without then being converted on messages+? I know the Samsung loaded messaging app doesn't auto convert them to emojis but I would prefer to stick with Verizon's messaging.
Thank you!
was the issue ever resolved because I'm having the same issue? I can't find where you can even disable the emoji to begin with....I only see something for smart emoji?
I've also been having this same problem, it's very annoying.
I had found a solution once and can't seem to find the thread again. I'm again having the same problem. Smart emojis are not enabled but it still does it
Hopefully you'll be able to find it once more, and once you do let us know
as we would all appreciate it!
I agree. Emoji suggestions (highlighted words that have emoji's associated to them), when using the Swype feature, are extremely annoying as well. You can't edit if it has a typo. The word has to be deleted and retyped. Can that be turned off?
I am having the same problem. I have tried numerous times and numerous suggestions on how to disable this menace called smart emojis and nothing works. Whoever invented this annoying app must have been deranged. Please someone find an answer!
Bump
Please stop ignoring this Verizon.
GS5
Lollipop
Verizon Messenger
I even tried a factory reset, but still the ***** emojis keep popping up even tho they've been disabled for months!
Maybe this will help this is the only setting I changed and when I returned to message+ the dreaded emoji allocation has disappeared.
In settings
Language & Input
Google Keyboard
Appearance & Layouts
Custom input style
Here's where it looked strange but after you select the settings nothing will appear different if you return.
Select Custom input style
German (QWERTY)
In Language dropdown select English (US)
When I selected this a popup appeared stating English was already selected, I went back to Verizon message+ and magically everything was better.
Please let me know if this fixed anyone's issues as I know this was a pain in the but for myself. And Verizon, you owe me big if this helps. Although I completely suspect you'll not even thank me, so no big.
This is an annoying problem but one I was able to solve. I don't know if this works for everyone but it worked on my Samsung Galaxy 5 with Verizon Messaging:
1) Go to Settings and actually ENABLE Smart Emojis
2) Then exit Settings
3) Then go back into Settings and disable them.
When I did this, then started a new message, Smart Emojis were disabled. Let's see how long it lasts. Verizon really seems to want us to use this dumb feature so it will probably be re-enabled next update. :smileysad:
This worked for me on my MotoX 2nd gen.
Verizon, can we please get this fixed??? Nothing has seemed to work for me, and I really want to be able to use : and ) together without it changing!
I can absolutley understand wehre you are coming from on this. I enjoy it as well. We can not fix the emoji upgrade. Have you tried putting a space between the the colon and the parenthesis? For example : )AnthonyM_VZWFollow us on Twitter @VZWSupportIf my response answered your question please click the Correct Answer button under my response. I seem to be having a similar issue, I do not have any sort of setting to turn this off and everyone else's advice has turned up short, can anyone help me out? I would just like to remove these emojis from popping up automatically. Thank you
This is an unacceptable response. Of course it can be fixed, since there is code in the messenger app responsible for changing the ASCII data into emojis. Too lazy to fix it I'm assuming?
I went into Message + settings and checked the box for emoji and then rebooted the phone, I then went back into Message + settings, unchecked the box and once again rebooted the phone.. It seems to have disabled the emoji and hopefully it stays that way.. VZW worst "improvement" idea yet..
If you can't change it then can you at least make it possible to customize notifications on the regular messaging app? It's pretty ridiculous that message+ is the only one that can do it and yet we have to be stuck with smileys that look crude and awkward. This just sounds like an excuse to not try and fix the problem.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! It worked for my G5.
The problem is not related to emojis. Emoji is an actual Unicode characterset. If you send an emiji character the same emoji character appers on the other end. At least the other venders version of it anyway but thats a different issue.
What is happening here is that messages just always displays the characters with a ridiculous and in appropriate smiley face picture overlay. This is only on your end, the normal text app on the other end still receives the ASCII . The problem cannot be communicated to Verizon. The call center is incapable of understanding and can only say smart emoji doesn't work, which it does. Smart emoji works just fine. It's some dumb module in the text display that generates the stupid picture overlay. It's a very different thing entirely.
It's not the keyboard and it's not emoji. When you type or :O or these ASCII or utf8 characters are placed in the text message and transmitted correctly. The phone on the other end receives etc verbatim. The problem is in the varizon messages display routine. These groups of characters are replaced by little bitmaps of smiley faces and this wonkey feature cannot be turned off. It is not related to emojis or emoji keyboards or smart emojis in any way. If you open the same text message in the stock text app the characters are still there and are displayed as
PLEASE show this message to an actual programmer for the Verizon messages app. Just provide a way to turn off the non-emoji smilies. Did I mention that it's not emoji? Because it's not emoji. Repeat after me "It's not emoji"
Agreed. The smart emoji function works fine. It's the emoticons that are displayed wonky. If they would just give me a way to disable this feature, I would use this app. To be honest, it's a deal breaker for me. I use Textra instead.

This worked for me on a Galaxy Note 4. If they pop back up again you may need to do this over again but it's simple and quick. You can test it by sending yourself a text with something like "happy" in it.
This worked for me on an LG V10:
New Galaxy S7 Edge owner here, I'm having the same problem. I'm glad to see that my recipients receive the standard ";)", but I still want to see that on my screen instead of the groteque auto-inserted smiley picture. Any updates?
You came to the right place for assistance dsandman87. Let's get yoiur S& Edge working the way that you need it. Have you ever been able to use symbols instead of emojis to express sentiment? Just to confirm, you are able to see the symbol on the default messaging app, correct?

Hi ArnettH_VZW, thanks for replying.
This problem may best be explained using pictures. Here's a text with an emoticon when I enter it into Messages+:
And here's the grotesque image that shows up when I press "Send":
The same thing happens when somebody sends me a message with an emoticon.
Using other apps (e.g., Hangouts, Messenger, Textra), I'm able to send texts using simple symbols without them being displayed with the grotesque pictures. Messages+ is the only app that causes this to happen, so far. I like Messages+ for many of its customization options, plus Verizon features. However, not being able to disable these emoticon to grotesque images may be a dealbreaker for the app. I've tried all the tricks mentioned in this thread so far. The space trick is not a good answer, it modifies what is meant to be conveyed in the message.
Please, if there's not currently an option to disable this feature, send this to the programmers of the app and ask them to fix it.
Thanks!
Thank you for the visuals, dsandman87. Now we know exactly what the issue is. My resources indicate that your application is working as designed. If you don’t that particular image to be sent, please use : & ) instead of ; & ) when you send a message. Keep us posted.

The emojis went away when I changed the keyboard to Swipe.
