Anyone who activated iPhone 5 on upgrade line and tried to switch to another line and got a 24 hour wait?

I also went into the store they found a sim card and still didnt work.

I had a similar issue. I purchased the phone under one number planning to switch to another on my plan. Got the phone and called VZW before activating the phone. They switched the iphones5 to the line I wanted but said the SIM card was in "pending" status and it could take 1 hours or it may take until midnight/ She said they do random pushed during the day but at midnight is when VZW has an automatic full push of anything pending. She said to make sure my old phone and iphone 5 were both off so the process could take place. Powered up after about 2 hours and still not active yet. In the meantime I added some apps and did a few other things on the i5 and then all of a sudden the popup box appeared stating phone was now active. I didn't have to go to the store to switch SIM cards or anything. Just had to wait for the "pending" switch to push through and I've been running great for 2 hours now.

hi, I am having the same problems, have had a wild and frankly disgraceful experience with various Verizon reps, and finally gave up until the 24 hours is up for the sim to age (as they explained to me) and for me to try again tomorrow. I had stayed home today to accept delivery and spent in total around 5 hours of my life I will never get back working with Verizon reps on the phone and visiting the local store, and I still have a very nice looking house brick effectively.

Hopefully tomorrow it will activate after the sim ages.........

I was told the same thing about a 24 hour wait. But I went online to My Verizon, then went into the Activate or switch phone link. I then chose the phone I wanted to activate the Iphone 5 on. It will then ask you for the IMEI # and the Sim card #. I found out that the Sim card # is actually the ICCID # listed on your receipt. That is it! Took me longer to sync with icloud than it did to activate new phone.

This might be due to it not being fully activated on the first number I have been trying this all day with no luck!! I am hopeing for the 24 hour period but at this point it's not looking good.

Mine was activated at 10:30 am or so so if it's not working by that time tomorrow I guess we got a i5 iPod...

iDroid, I just activated my phone about 30 minutes ago. I then tried to switch it to another line online but was confused by the note that said the SIM would be deactivated in 90 days. Not wanting to mess stuff up, I canceled my attempt and called instead. The rep, Tara, told me that it's good I didn't try to switch the lines online because it is messing stuff up due to the whole 24-hour SIM card issue. She told me to wait until the same time tomorrow and call them to make the switch. I've never heard of this 24-hour thing before. But I guess I have no other choice but to wait. Really lame situation.

You can change phone numbers....I just did it. Just get the right phone agent.

I'm in the same boat here. I just fear that come tomorrow, I still won't be able to switch it to the other line. They're probably telling everyone to wait 24 hours just to buy themselves some time to figure all this crap out! Lol

iDroid, can you update us ASAP tomorrow? You'll know a lot sooner than I will if that 24-hour timeframe is hogwash or not.

A techy named David helped me out by swapping my newly added line over to an old phone. As for my I5, it is active but no service. They told me to go to my local corporate store and get a new nano sim installed. Apparently our pre-installed nano sims are synced to the designated lines intended for. But anyways, I went to my local verizon store and they did not have any. So I have to wait till tomorrow and get another nano sim installed. This sucks...

You don't need to get another SIM card. I had the same issue. Called for the same reason and they switched the SIM ID over to the designated line I intended for the iphone5. The 2nd lady I spoke to said I needed to replace the SIM card but then read over notes and saw the 1st guy I spoke to did the switch over the phone and the transfer was in "pending" status. Due to this, it may be up until midnight for the activation to take effect. Important this is to make sure at least your old phone is turned off. You can confirm when this has taken place by logging into your My Verizon - Get Upgrade Status. Your iphone5 will show once it is activated. This is the process I went through and all was activated 2 hours after i spoke to VZW

My local verizon store, a manager said they would be getting some in tomorrow. I hope that is true because all I can do with my I5 right now is use the wifi!!!

Anyone that got there phone activated after they said it would be 24 hours was the iPhone 5 active on the first line you activated on before you got it activated on the second line or did you de activate from first line and have it just connected to WIFI no cellular network?

it worked for me. I was told 24 hrs by CS too. However, you can just go to your verizon wireless account and click on switch devices. be sure to use the numbers on your receipt (IMEI, ICCID)

Was your phone active on the first line when you did this or did you de avctivate t 5 then activate after a few hours to the new number?

Just got up and tried online activation to my new iPhone 5 out of shear frustration did not want to wait until 1pm (24 hour story Verizon told me) it appeared to work and my phone is on line, just restoring from iCloud now...... Not sure whether Verizon cannot count to 24 or they have random overnight pushes or updates to their systems and mine happened to clear whatever hurdles there were, but so far so good.....

There was no need to activate the 5 on the upgrade line. Some reps were clueless. I had my 5 activated on my line in about 10 minutes maintaining unlimited.

I purchased the 5 for a basic line to get the upgrade price. My line has unlimited with the 4S and was not eligible. I first got a rep who was incorrect telling me I first had to activate the 5 on the basic line and then switch. NO. I called back and got a rep that knew what she was doing. I did not have to do anything with the basic line, Working with the rep I was able to activate the 5 on my unlimited line without loosing the unlimited. Since I never activated the 5 on the basic line, the data plan for the basic line did not kick in. The basic phone is now on a 2 year agreement but since my mother-in-law uses the basic phone and could not deal with a smart phone, no problem. My 4S will soon be on my wife's line so she will get the 2GB data plan at $30 per month. I will be able to do that easily online. If at first you get a clueless rep, hang up and call back.

Restoring from backup now, after getting up frustrated this morning and trying the onlin activation - all worked and no need to talk to one of the reps who would have given me a story that may or may not have been true! Seems like it is something to do with updates to the Verizon back end servers overnight - phone is up and working and sim clearly did not need to be replaced - its been a ridiculous story of miss information from the Verizon reps, thanks to this forum I made progress, it just should not be this hard with such a huge release!

let me share my horrid experience with the reps as it seems that even a day later, the confusion continues. I didn't receive my iphone until after 6pm eastern by UPS (I am from NJ). I was initially told by both Apple and Verizon prior to yesterday that I would be able to simply active the phone on whichever line I wanted BEFORE turning the phone on by calling VZW directly when I received the device. So, I called 10 minutes later and the first rep attempted to help me (as I heard the papers shuffling in the background) telling me I had to activate it on the device I purchased the unit on and wait 24 hours to then swap it back to the line I wanted the phone activated on. I told him "NO" that's not correct -- Was told I could activate directly on any device of my choosing so far as I did so before turning the device "on" and i requested he escalate to his supervisor. Waited a few moments and then was told the same story, but in different words. I Said then "OK. I'll try later then" and hung up. I then attempted to contact another rep about an hour later -- she seemed much more helpful, but again, was unable to help. She told me essentially their systems had a glitch and was having issues processing transfer activations, so I should just simply wait 24-48 hours and then try to active directly on the line I wanted. I thanked her and hung up. Frustrated, I said let me see if I can just activate this device on my own without anyone's help. So, I pulled out the nano sim card on the iPhone5 and copied down the serial # (it is printed right on the top of it) and then inserted it back.. and subsequently logged into the VZW web site and clicked 'Activate' device. I selected the # I wanted to activate on, typed in the serial and voila! The system said that my phone was activated. Naturally with all of the activations going on this took a bit longer than normal. I verified the activation did indeed to take place because my old device was immediately deactivated. I proceeded to turn on the iphone5 after about an hour or so, to allow for the activation process to settle into their system and proceeded to turn on the device and follow through the initial iphone screens. Note, at the last screen it says that I'm activating on (XXXXXX - number that I upgraded on) which was incorrect, but said to contact verzion wireless to swap the #. I accpeted the terms of agreement and proceeded to restore the device from icloud. In about 15-20 mins afterwards, my device was fully activated on the device I was intending to activate without any interruption to the other line of service. Synoposis of the story don't turn phone on, pull nano sim out and write number down, go on verizonwireless and activate from there, wait some period of time, turn device on and you should be golden. It's surprising to me how much chaos and confusion is going on at the support center, whereas someone like me who doesn't work for vzw or had any knowledge on processes and procedures for this new phone was able to simply activate a device on my own with no help from anyone.

Is it really necessary to pull the SIM card to get the serial #? Is that number different than the ICCID number that's on the customer receipt that came with the phone?

I want to try and do what you did, but I think I'm going to wait a day or two for everything to settle out.

I'm out of town for the weekend and can't risk being without a phone (plus I want to make sure I use the proper method that doesn't wipe out my unlimited data plan).

my order didn't come with the sim # printed out on the invoice (probably becauseI ordered from apple directly), and from experience I knew the 4g sim cards (nano or not) have the serial printed on them. The 2nd rep essentially told me the same "it's possible but I'd wait a few days and try again" -- they are probably slammed with too many support calls and not enough knowledge. I, unfortunately, needed to have the phone active before today because I'm on a 12 hour conference call for work and required a functional device without interruption to the other device.. As for the unlimited versus the shared, I had actually migrated to the share everything plan when it was introduced because I have several devices on my account and this plan actually winds up being cheaper for me and I have yet to go over the 10g allotment of data. I got my new iphone 5 since yesterday 1pm and still not activated yet. I been to the store, and called on the phone and nothing works. I reset it so many times but I keep getting the message that my iphone is not activated. This is the 2nd sim card. Now they told me to replace the whole device. I can't even connect to wifi or do anything except stay on the home screen. On the top left corner, all I see is 3g and 4 bars but no cellular data. Any ideas?? I guess I'll try to replace it but then I have to wait...

The SIM card number is longer than what is allowed under activate this device. It cuts off the last digits. How did you activate with SIM number??

I bought mine in verizon store. They activated it on the NEW number. I want to switch to my number to keep my unlimited. They said I have to call customer service, get a new sim card, then I can switch. Customer service basically agreed and said I would get one Monday. Well the shipping info says Tuesday so basically I have to wait till then to switch?

I have tried several time online to just switch it myself, but I keep getting this error, "Our records indicate you recently purchased a device for this line of service but have not activated it yet. You have the option to proceed with your device swap after you have activated your new device, or you may contact Customer Service at (800) 922-0204 for further assistance."

Okay tried something different. I tried to activate it using the IMEI/MEID number on the back of the iphone box onto my droid razr number. It acted like it was going to work. This is what came up:

Thank you! Your new device is 4G-enabled and requires a SIM Card. Your current SIM Card is not compatible with your 4G device.

You are requesting to change from a 4G device to a 4G device.

Then I clicked on activate my sim card and it told me it could not be activated and to call customer service.

I received that message too but since I activated directly on the verizon web site and the message said successful I Figured that was just the default and continued through it. I've been using the device on the correct phone # and account since last night with no issues.. No new sim cards and no waiting 24-48 hours! :smileyhappy:

Yea I didn't activate it directly like that. It was activated in store first. My old phone still working.

I just tried, to no avail. I get a message that my request could not be completed. I called and the rep once again told me to wait until the 24 hours has passed.

Woke up in the AM clicked on activate device punched in the ID # and sim card # picked which line I wanted it on accepted the data plan and it was activated on the new line finally!!

iDroid -- Thanks for your updates. I'm in the same boat -- the phone is activated on the upgrade line and I'm waiting 24 hours to get it activated on my destination line. Did you keep the phone/SIM active on the upgrade line for 24 hours or does it need to be deactivated for 24 hours? I've gotten both responses from Verizon but am not sure which one is correct.

I've been following this thread since 7pm pst yesterday as my adventures were just like all of yours, except without ending up with a working phone. Wanted to post on here, in case anyone was just overly cautious like me, that you are still going to get the screen showing the number for your phone as being the one on your sim (the "wrong" one). Keep pushing next and ignoring it. I didn't do that until this morning and once I did my online status changed from order pending to showing the new phone. I suspect had I done this last night I would have been rejoicing much sooner. Anyway, you all helped a hell of a lot more than Verizon did so thank you for that. Gonna laugh when my supposedly required new SIM card shows up on Wed.

I'm curious about this as well dreucla23. I activated at 5:45 pm (pacific) yesterday and then deactivated at 7 am this morning. When I called Verizon the rep made reference to my activation time, not my deactivation time, so I'm hoping for 5:45 pm today. Also, I believe iDroid activated at around 10:30 am yesterday and his phone just got activated a few minutes ago. Not sure what time zone he's in, but that seems pretty close to the 24 hour mark.

It was activated on 555-2222 (example) the original upgrade line then the phone was removed from the 555-2222 to transfer the a differnt line on my account 555-9999 (example) with no success ALL DAY yesterday so the iphone 5 was not active or on a line all day either. I wake up this morning at 6:45 am go to my Verizon and click activate device link put in the id # the sim # pick the line I want it on choose data and boom it worked took a few mins to activate!

Had the same situation- heard about the 24 hour wait, etc. but ultimately yesterday after running around to get a mini-sim card from Apple store to take to Verizon store to reprogram, a very helpful tech in Pleasanton store (Arthur) was able to reprogram the existing mini-sim in the new iPhone 5 and have it working on the line I needed within minutes without removing it- ended up not needing the mini-sim I tracked down!

My phone was NOT active on the original upgrade line all day yesterday once it was first activated out of box we took the phone off the line since the phone was not meant for that number.

iDroid - so the iphone that was activated on a dummy line, do I need to find a dumb phone first, activate it on the dummy line, then I will be able to switch my iphone from that dummy line to my current number? I've been looking all over my house for my dumb phone and I can't find it!

Hello Everyone,

If you wish to transfer your service and phone number from one 4G LTE phone to another, the simplest

way to do so is generally by moving your SIM card from the first phone to the second.

However, because the SIM card in your iPhone 5 is different from the SIM card in other Verizon 4G LTE devices, the SIM cards are not interchangeable.

If you have already activated your new iPhone 5 and you wish to move it to a different mobile number; remove the sim card; wait 24 hours; then follow these steps:

Step ➊ Go to verizonwireless.com/activatenow and sign in to My Verizon (as the Account Owner or

Account Manager).

Step ➋ Select a line (if applicable) and click Next.

Step ➌ Follow instructions for Backup Assistant∞.

• If Backup Assistant is already installed, click the Back Up Phone Now button.

• If eligible for Backup Assistant, click the Install Backup Assistant button and follow the

steps to install from device.

• If NOT eligible for Backup Assistant, click the appropriate Operating System link and

follow the steps.

Step ➍ Select Next.

Step ➎ Type the Device ID (ESN, MEID or IMEI). Select Submit.

Step ➏ Type the SIM ID Code (located on the label of the box). Select Next.

Step ➐ Select the check box for the desired feature(s). Click Continue.

Step ➑ Review and confirm the selected updates. Select Submit.

If only this were true, Tasha. Many of us waited the mysterious 24 hours only to come to find it's 24 hours from when the iPhone was DEactivated - aka ANOTHER 24 hours for many of us. So, 48 hours no phone thanks to the horrid miscommunucation from your reps.

pemoe26 is correct. The 24 hours STARTS when you remove the sim card completely from the iPhone 5 (not 24 hours after it is activated).

This is incorrect information, Tanisha. It's been over 24 hours and my iPhone 5 still cannot be activated by following the steps you provided, or by calling Verizon. I just called AGAIN and both reps I talked to told me that I have to wait 48 hours now to activate the phone. I asked them why many people in my situation were able to activate theirs in less than 24 hours and they had no answer. This is the most frustrating cell phone related issue I've ever had to deal with. I don't understand why Verizon was not better prepared. I'm tired of getting incorrect information, or no information at all, from every rep I've spoken to in the past couple of days.

Spot on pemoe26. Somehow I knew that when the 24 hours was up, nothing would change. 7 a.m. tomorrow will be 24 hours since I deactivated the phone. Nothing else to do but wait until then. Although, I was given a B.S. attempt at a glimmer of hope by the last rep I talked to...he said that according to some email they received, customers can activate their phones at 12:01 eastern time. I don't know what magic is going to happen between now and then, but I'll try anyway at 9 p.m. (I'm on the west coast). I'll let you know if anything happens, but don't hold your breath!

In my experience the 5 was activated once received at about 9:45 am 9/21 the de activated or removed from the line it was upgraded on and activated on so the 5 was without service from then until 6:30 am this morning (California) I logged into my verizon and clicked activate device punched in the phone and sim info and picked data and submited and it worked.

I hope this helps anyone who has not got there phone to the right number I know how frustrationg this is!

Yes the sim was removed once only beacuse I went to my local store and they tried some sim card they found there but it still didn't work with the sim they found so he replaced the sim the phone came with.

Yeah, I'd like to enjoy the rest of my weekend playing with my new iPhone! I'll now by 7 a.m. If Verizon was blowing smoke up my a$$ once again.

Good news, pemoe26! I tried activating my phone online at a few minutes past 4 a.m. (don't ask me what I was doing up) and it FINALLY went through! It had been about 21 hours since I deactivated it. I'm sure yours will be able to activate soon also! Adam@xerox had advised me to have both phones off when I did the activation online but being half asleep, I forgot to turn off the old one. The activation still went through online though, so that was good. But when I tried to make a call on the new phone right after turning it on, I got the Verizon recorded message. That's when I realized I had left the other phone on. So I shut it off and then restarted the new phone. A couple minutes later, I tried making a call and it went through. Now I'm restoring the new phone from an iCloud backup. It took me awhile to figure out how to run the setup assistant again so that it can give me the option to restore, since I had already ran it when I activated the phone the first time. I had to go to settings>general>reset>erase all content and settings and I was able to set it up like brand new again. Thanks to everyone on these forums for their valuable input and no thanks to Verizon!

So yr2615 and pemoe, it finally worked once you deactivated iPhone 5 off your account and pulled sim for 24 hrs? because i finally did that @ 7am this morning....hoping by tomorrow morning i can finally activate it on the line i intended to use this thing on....until then paper weight

Hi dewdst, that's right. I didn't have to physically remove the SIM card. I just went online to My Verizon and activated an old dumb phone that I had (using the MEID number under the battery.) I selected the $9.99/month plan for dumb phones and then hit submit. I believe I dialed *228 to activate the dumb phone once it gave me the confirmation message. But it will let you know on that confirmation page what else you may need to do to the phone. The activation was immediate. I tried making a call from the iPhone just to make sure it was deactivated and it was. My Verizon also reflected the dumb phone on the line that the iPhone used to be on. Then it was just one long waiting game until it finally allowed me to activate the iPhone on the correct line. I'm sure it will work for you also once it hits 24 hours, probably even a little before.

ok cool. I did exactly what you described and also removed the SIM as of 8:45am 9/23 .....i will try just after 7am eastern time 9/24 to reactivate the iphone on my line and post back here my results for anyone dealing with this joke of an issue. Honestly I love verizons voice service, however everything else is awful and I wish AT&T was a little more on par and I would switch back

Confirmation that the 24 hour period indeed works.

Background on myself.

Iphone5 was upgraded on a line different from the line that it was going to be permanently used on. Phone was received on the 21st and was activated on the upgraded line. I immediately deactivated this line from the Iphone5 and activated a different phone on this line. The iphone5 was since deactivated from any account since 8pm on Sept 21st.

Had issues with getting the Iphone5 activated on the line it was meant to be permanently used on. Verizon stores were out of Nano sims and i was getting restless. Finally after reading this thread, I decided to give it a try after reading that a 24 hr period of deactivation will allow the nano sim to be activated on another line.

Conclusion: Success. Called a verizon rep to have the switch conducted since there was a hold on my My Verizon online account. ( I had an open order for a nano sim card to switch phones. Did not allow me to reach the screen to input the MEID and sim card numbers). I gave my info to the rep after notifying her that the Iphone was deactivated since 8pm on the 21st, and the sim card pulled out of the phone since then. (I also kept the Iphone on airplane mode for some reason which may have helped). THe rep informed me that the switch went through, and for good measure I also confirmed that the unlimited data rate was still in tact.

A couple thigns that are still iffy. On the My Verizon website, it shows the Iphone5 under the correct number and activated as per the verizon rep. I am getting 4G LTE data on the Iphone5 itself, however, I am not yet able to make outgoing calls. I expect this to be resolved soon as the rep informed me of delays due to the high volume of IPhone 5 activations. Also, the number listed in my Iphone5 still shows the original number to which it was purchased under. I am guessing this is an Iphone hardware issue but can not completely confirm this.

I will report back with confirmation the total switch process has been completed.

It's been over 72 hours and I still have a "pending order" status on my iphone 5 line that I want to switch. So I can't do anything nor has Verizon been able to do anything when I called.

Maybe at this point it would be best to get another SIM card from Apple or Verizon.

72 hours is a long time for it to be pending.

So I tried to activate @ 7am -- 24hrs after deactivating online using myverizon = FAIL

Tried a few times throughout the day with no luck. Finally called VZW asked for Senior tech support -- they were able to do it online. They said it must of been an issue with going from a 3g device to 4g device for the first time. Either way finally I'm up and running. Hope everyone gets theirs going as well!

Tried that and failed as well. They said they couldn't do anything until the phone is out of "Pending Status". Same answer over the phone as well and they do not know why it is still in pending status after this long. Getting pretty burnt out as well because it won't even let me cancel and return the phone.

Glad you finally got it activated. It's so pathetic that people got their phones DAYS ago and couldn't use it.

I went from 3G to 4G as well and I got mine on 21 hours after deactivation. Verizon just tells us whatever sounds good. They're guessing just as we are.
