Which is the better bet for insuring a new iPhone 5? Apple Care or Assurion through Verizon? Or both?
go with Apple Care its cheaper and you get your phone back after its repaired. No refurbished like Asurion or Verizon will off load on you.
you can go to any Apple store for your repairs. Give yourself some piece of mind and go Apple Care.
Good Luck
Both are excellent choices with different benefits MostlyALurker. Here is information on our insurance plan http://tiny.cc/4w91xw. Applecare blows away Asurion in every regard but one: they don't cover lost/stolen phones at all.
Alas that is a drawback. Good Point however.
Asurion is a scam. I paid $9.99 a month for almost 2 years to insure my iPhone 4S. Today my phone got stolen. I called Asurion. They told me I have to pay $169 for deductible. When Verizon sells the insurance, they never mention the deductible. It's total **. I go to Verizon site for more info about Asurion, it does not say anything about $169 deductible ($199 for 32-64GB). There is a link to full terms and condition. When I clicked on it, it says page can not be displayed.
Since I'm a couple of months away from a discounted upgrade, Verizon offered me $300 off on new phone. So I'd end up paying the same $169 or even less for a new iPhone 4S. The Asurion coverage I paid all these months are good for nothing.
I suspected Verizon gets a percentage from Asurion. I will file a complaint with BBB.
Get apple care. Avoid Asurion like a plague. I've heard people say Asurion gave them refurbished phones after charging them deductible. Google it. A lots of horror stories.

I have had Assurian insurance for years on my Verizon phones. Luckily I have Never needed to use it though. With this last phone, I got an off brand of insurance (Not through Verizon). $50.00 deductible on a smartphone, $75.00 on an iPhone, and it costs on average 4.49 per month over 2 years, they cover Stolen phones, and best of all, when they send replacements, they send BRAND NEW phones. My girlfriend dropped her phone and the screen cracked. They replaced it the following day with a brand new phone, and when sending the old one back, they didn't claim that we sent an empty box or they never got it.
Hi daweil,I hear you loud and clear! Asurion is a great feature to have on your devices. It's just like car insurance, you pay a premium every month and in the event something happens; there is a deductible. This is better than paying full retail for a new phone. I hear you Apple Care is another great way to protect your device, it does not cover you in the event your phone is stolen though. Hope the replacement is working out for you. Thanks, BobbyS_VZWFollow us on Twitter @VZWSupport

I will only go with Applecare from here on out. My one experience with Assurion on an iPhone 5 almost cost me $500. It was $199 for the deductible (which was a surprise to me). Like others, when asked by sales at VZW if I was interested in insurance there was no mention of the terms and conditions. Once you receive your replacement phone, you have to mail in with a return label the damaged phone. I did so the very same day. The return never made it to Assurion, or at least that was the claim. It took multiple phone calls to multiple customer service reps to convince them I wasn't trying to scam a phone and get the $300 penalty fee dropped.
If you have access to an Apple Store, it's always best to go face-to-face with the Genius Bar. In the 3 or 4 times we've had to deal with them either under normal warranty or Applecare, they have been THE BEST. Twice, they simply gave us a new phone rather than make us wait for a repair. Once the did a battery replacement on the spot in about 30 minutes. I've never walked away unsatisfied. Even though, in the end, the Assurion situation was resolved, it was a PITA.
Keep in mind, there is ALSO a deductible for AppleCare(hope that is not a surprise for you), although it is smaller than the Assurion deductible.
AppleCare also does not cover as many things as Assurion does, loss for example.
It all depends on your needs. Not everyone has the same needs.:smileyhappy:
All of the above, understood. There is something undeniable about face-to-face interaction rather than phone games. Also, Assurion is used by retail (Target for example) all over the US. They deal with much more than iPhones, so it's kind of like dealing with a generalist. The Genius Bar is a specialist service.
