Is the phone a Verizon Wireless iphone?
Have you checked to verify the ESN/MEID number is clean? You can call customer service from another phone and ask them to check it for you.
I'm most definitely NOT a VZW employee. If a post answered your question, please mark it as the answer.

Hi there CChilders!
Your friend is so nice! What a wonderful gift. I definitely want to you to be able to use your new gift! I will be delighted to provide some suggestions.
First, I would absolutely check the Device Id here:
http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/estore/certifieddevice/cd
This link will tell you if you're able to activate it on a Verizon Wireless number.
If all looks well and you have the Device ID activated to your current Verizon Wireless phone number, you may have to reset the phone and reactivate it as a new phone. You can find those steps here:

Keep us posted!
Thanks,
