Is my recently paid off Verizon iPhone 12 Pro Max unlocked?

I recently paid of my Verizon iPhone 12 Pro Max though the monthly payment plan. I upgrade the phone on my line and did not trade the phone in. I am selling the iPhone 12 Pro Max to someone that uses a different carrier. They asked if the phone was unlocked. Please advise.

hello, i was wondering if you were ever able to get your phone unlocked? i have purchased an iphone from a 3rd party and verizon refuses to unlock the phone even though the phone isn't stolen and have been fully paid off. i've been bounced around to many different reps all saying different things. eventually the last rep tells me that they can't unlock it because they dont know if its a phone purchased through verizon. i mean who else sells verizon phones besides verizon?! i was going to switch providers to verizon but after seeing that they can't even do a simple task of unlocking a phone i really have second thoughts now. if anyone can help i would greatly appreciated it. thanks in advance!

@javachino, one can buy Verizon phones through some major retailers (Amazon and Best Buy come to mind) as well as through Verizon or Verizon authorized retailers.  As for your locked phone problem, Verizon phones are supposed to automatically unlock after 60 days of being activated and used on the Verizon network, and then they don't get re-locked per the policy stated on Verizon's website.  As to why your phone has mysteriously gotten locked, I suspect one of the following:

-The 3rd party seller you purchased the phone from obtained it through shady means and the phone is blacklisted

-The original owner of the phone did not pay off the phone or otherwise did not fulfill whatever contract they had with Verizon and offloaded the phone to someone else hoping to skip out on paying any more bills.  Then Verizon shut the phone off for nonpayment.

Otherwise, sorry to hear about your CS experience.  Unfortunately I think we are getting sent to a call center overseas most of the time.

thank you for your response.

so i've reached out to the seller and we were on the phone with a tier 2 tech which had confirmed the previous owner's account and was able to check that the phone was 1. fully paid off and not blacklisted and 2. was still indeed locked to verizon network even though it should have been unlocked.  however since the previous owner is no longer a customer at verizon the tech claimed that she can't do anything without an active line. i then proceeded to a verizon store to open a line in which and they told me that the phone would then be unlocked in 30 days. i had intentions of keeping the line if the phone had unlocked however after 30 days it was still showing sim locked. i then called back verizon and asked what happen and they said they dont know. that someone in the back office needs to "ok" the process and for some reason they denied it. needless to say i was bump around to different CS without getting a real answer besides the previous owner has to show proof that they had purchased the phone through verizon. the previous owner bought the phone a few years ago....anyway. i'm in the process of filing an FCC complaint and hopefully that would yield some results. thanks again!
