Sending a text message from iPhone 5 to a feature phone

I have been reading this thread about text messages to email from iPhones arriving as attachments:

I have a slightly different question. I was told that if I send a text message from a iPhone 5 to a feature phone (as a text message, not to email), the message will appear as an MMS and not an SMS. Thus the receipient, who does not have a text messaging plan, will be charged the MMS rate and not the SMS rate. Is this true? If so, is there a workaround?

MostlyAlurker, thanks for posting. I want to give you some more info on this situation. If the iPhone 5 has iMessage on then it will send as an MMS but you can turn iMessage off, send a text and it will arrive as a text not MMS. I hope this helps.

Thank you, that does help. I was not aware I could turn off imessage.
