The Things we do for Unlimited Data

Hopefully someone can help me here.

Currently, I'm on my own Unlimited Data plan with an iPhone 4 on AT&T. My folks just activated new iPhone 4s with Verizon, and Verizon was nice enough to give them both unlimited data on their lines.

Now, I've always wanted to join back up with them when they got their iPhone 4s, and I'd happily break with AT&T and switch over to Verizon. They knew I wanted to do this, so they activated a third line with data for me (with Unlimited Data) but without a phone attached to it. Verizon is crediting the unlimited data for the first month, so I'll only have to pay the $30 each additional month until I am able to get a Verizon iPhone.

But here's the weird part. The Verizon rep said that when I decide to switch over, I'll have to pay full price (as in, the FULL retail value) on the iPhone 4 because they have technically already activated the line. Is this true? It seems as if I should still be able to get the activation price ($200), because we have activated a brand new line, there's just no phone attached with it yet.

Is there a less messy way of doing this? If we cancel the third ghost line, could I just add a line in a few months and be grandfathered in to the Unlimited data because they have it on their end? Hopefully someone can help with this. Thanks for your help!

I had an answer all ready until you got to the point of them already having a line activated. Did they do this at a corporate store as this sounds like something an affiliate store would do.

If they did not get a cheapo phone to activate the line, the iPhone would be discounted. But I would check with them and Verizon to see what exactly is going on with this third line.

One thing I can guarantee is VZW is not building up the a fund for your line when you join.

Sound's like a retailer just wanted comission. I bet there's a cheap phone activated on the line already is why.

I had a feeling that he was just wanting commission, because he was really pushing the purchase of the third phone and saying there is absolutely no way that I could get the normal price of the iPhone when I wanted to purchase it in a month or two.

This was an actual Verizon store, not a reseller or anything.

So are you guys saying that I can definitely get the discount price of the iPhone when I go to get it in a few months, even though that line is technically activated?

Would my parents have the unlimited grandfathered into their family plan and should I just cancel this ghost line and start over with the new line in a few months? I'll want to be porting my current number, too.

if he sold them anyphone, just to activate the line, then no you cannot get the cheap price

was this a corp store? how long ago? they have 14days to cancel it and return the phone

If you cancel this 'ghost' line there may be an ETF if the rep threw a free phone on that line. And I bet if there is a third line, there IS a phone attached to it.

As for being grandfathered, they may be. But any new line may or may not be able to get an unlimited plan down the road.

I would have them log into the account online and look and see what that third line is and if a phone is assigned to it. It will show up. Then go from there. That issue needs to be cleared up first.

What is the address of the store they used?

He didn't sell/give them any phone, he simply said that the line is on the account and when I want to use it it will be there, with the unlimited data. So they walked out of the store with two phones, not three. I wouldn't be surprised if an actual phone is tied to it though, and it's just sitting behind the counter or something. It's good to know they have 14 days to cancel that line if need be.

So if a physical phone that they have is attached to it should I just wait for the possibility of an iPhone 5 in a few months, pay the $30 for the plan each month until then, and pay an upgrade price to get the new iPhone? That'll be cheaper and more beneficial than paying more for an iPhone 4 now. Or was the rep correct in saying no matter what, I'm going to have to pay the FULL retail price of any phone I put on there?

I would recommend to visit the store in question to clear any misunderstandings regarding the third line on your parent's account as only the store representative would know all the facts on that transaction. Please keep in mind that our return policy allows 14 days for returns and exchanges.
