Unable to save custom voicemail greeting?

I'm trying to record a custom voicemail greeting, and am following the directions -- going to Voicemail, selecting Greeting, then Custom, then recording, and clicking Save -- but every time I try, I get an error message saying that voicemail is unavailable and to try again later. It's been going of for a while now. Has anyone else has this issue?

What happens when you try to manually dial *86-send? Are you getting a similar error message?

Are you on a Wi-fi connection? If so try taking it off to setup your voicemail for your iPhone.

I tried turning off the wifi to set up the voicemail greeting -- no luck. And to take matters from annoying to really problematic, when I dialed *86, I discovered that I haven't been getting any notifications of voice mails left for me, and I had several, a few REALLY important, waiting for me. This needs to be fixed ASAP, so what should I do next?

Apple is havein network problems for iMessage Siri etc. it might be to with voicemail since it is there voicemail. Not that I'm saying Verizon isent involved. Sometimes it takes hrs to get s message. Not that I don't get good signal.

Sorry for the delay in response here. We want your voicemail working well all the time! Can we get an update on how it's working now? Also, I would recommend closing out running applications and restarting the phone. It may be something in an application that is causing the VM to malfunction. To close out apps, simply double tap the home button, and when the apps appear on the bottom row of the screen, press & hold to close out the applications by then clicking the "minus" sign. Try this and please let us know.

Nope, that didn't help. Still can't record a custom greeting, still can't use the visual voicemail, and still get no notification when I have a voicemail message.

Was there ever a solution? My sons iPhone 4S is having the same problem. His data account was closed for a month or so as his phone was broken. It was fixed and his data plan deactivated but he gets the "voicemail unavailable" message when he tries to save a custom greeting

Make sure wifi is off and then go into settings, general, reset and select reset network settings. Apple logo will appear for few minutes. Once phone is back on, go into vmail and see if it will give you that option.

Thanks for the reply kbark but no dice. I still cannot save a custom greeting, nor can I access his voicemail. I still get the "Voicemail Unavailable - could not authorize access" message when trying to save.

If you haven't already see if you can dial *86 and set up or listen to voicemail that way and then go back in under voicemail on the phone. If still not working then you will need to call tech support. Sorry the first option didn't work:(

I am having the same problem which started this morning after I did an online phone number change. I get the "Voicemail Unavailable - could not authorize access" or "voicemail unavailable - try again later message". When I dial *86, my voicemails are there and I can set up my custom greeting, but that only works with the *86 process. I would like to revert to what had been working all along. I also tried turning wi-fi off and recording a custom greeting but that did not work. Frustrating. Can anyone help?

Good morning. I am sorry to learn of the difficulties you are experiencing with your voicemail. Let's get to the bottom of your voicemail concerns.

I understand this happened after your changed your mobile number. Can you try resetting your network settings. To reset your network settings click http://vz.to/19OMzKU. After you reset your network settings reprogram your phone by dialing *228 send then select option 1. After your phone is programmed simply power off and back on, then set up your voicemail. Hi Michelle - Thanks for your email.

My problems increase and continue. I have an iPhone 5 and all was well until I changed my phone number 2 days ago. As of the change, I lost the ability to use (or save) my custom phone message greeting. Frustrated, I visited a local Verizon store and they did many things, including a reset of network settings. They also changed out the SIM card. Changing the SIM card introduced a new problem, losing visual voice mail. Now, unless I am at my phone when it rings and a message is left, I have no way of knowing that I missed a call. Without VVM, when I press the phone icon and then the voicemail app, the phone directly dials *86. This is driving me crazy. I have spent hours, literally, on the phone with Verizon and Apple support teams and I have visited a local Apple store. They did numerous things including giving me a new iPhone, all to no avail. I still do not have visual voice mail and my phone continues to directly dial *86 when all I want to do is to see if I have a phone message.

I hope this hasn't been too long and I hope I haven't bored you to tears with my saga. All I want is for my iPhone 5 to act like it always did when my phone rings and I"m not available to answer it.

For your information, what you received was not a direct email from a customer service representative. It was a transcript of the message posted on the Verizon Wireless Community forum. Your user preferences on the forum must be setup for you to receive email "notifications" of new activity on the discussion where you posted your message on August 22nd. If you look at that email and this one where the message I'm writing on response to your post on the forum there is some instructions about following the link to view the full discussion on the community.

As for your phone number change, customer service through either Verizon or Apple will have to reset your voicemail on their end and you will have to setup the voicemail from the phone again. I don't know why the reps you have already talked to haven't been helpful so I hope that you have find another rep that is more knowledgeable and can get this sorted out for you.

Thanks for the details aljoseph. The problem you have described is unusual. If you have already worked with other support channels and Apple, our options have likely been exhausted. A hard reset would be the final step of troubleshooting on an existing device before replacing it. You stated you already replaced the device; therefore, it sounds like it may be a relationship between the manufacturer(Apple) and the app(visual voicemail). Have you tested a different device(non Apple) since the number change? How about uninstalling the visual voicemail app?

I had the same problem. But if you turn on the cellular data option, it worked for me. I had just been using my WiFi to get the internet on my phone and had shut off using the cell signal. Once I turned it on, the greeting worked.

Had the same problem with iPhone 6s. I resolved the issue by power cycling the phone (push power button to shut the phone down, wait about a minute, the hold the power button to turn it on).
