Why don't people like iPhones?

"I currently have a Droid X and am fed up with it and was wondering why are so many people against iPhones? I think it's great how Apple only has one phone out on the market so that they really focus on it. And in my experience all my past Apple products have never had any real problems."

It's not quite accurate to say that "so many people are against iPhones" in the general sense (especially when you look at the iPhones' sales numbers). While I was an Android guy for 2 years, it was not because didn't care for iPhones. It was because Android phones offered things that the single Apple phone didnt (slide-out keyboards, for example) as well as a level of customization not available on iPhones. These days, those things that I preferred about Android now get on my nerves (aside from really bad experiences with the last Android phone I had. The problems had nothing to do with it being an Android phone) and the iPhones suits me very nicely.

I think what you are referring to is a small group of people that live and breathe "I hate Apple" on their sleeve, just as there is a small group with an "I hate Android/Google" mantra. 99% of folks has chosen their phone of choice without harboring feelings one way or the other toward the other phone offerings. Frankly, the arguments I read in the various geek boy sites about the phones they disapprove of simply bores the living cr@p outta me. Choose yer phone and get on with yer life. But for those folks, that just makes too much sense.

Let me also mention that the Droid X I had was the best phone I ever had before I got this iPhone 4S. My daughter still has that phone, almost a year and a half old now. She just got an iPhone, too, but only because I did and her boyfriend did, too, and not because it wasn't doing the job. If you are feeling a need to replace your X, the iPhone is a worthy choice, regardless of what "so many people" think.

"My main reason for not liking Apple products in general is the way they control everything. Android is a Linux based operating system, the first rule of Linux is that it will always be free and open. This creates a very open and friendly developer market. While I will consent that the build quality of a lot of Apple products are very well done I can't support them because of there app store. Android and Apple have been going trading punches since day one and will continue to do so for a long time. I find it funny that Steve Jobs himself swore to destroy Android.. What was he so afraid of? An open and free community driven development project, I think so. Just my 2 cents."

My job requires me to use both, and well my wife as well. Each has their pros and cons. I personally like Android for various reasons related to programming. It allows me to do what I want when I want, and I get the source code to do it.

I do like certain aspects of the iPhone which Android is lacking and probably still lacking with their new OS. My wife enjoys it more than I do. So she been using my development device as a daily driver(in which I have to move back to the iPod Touch until she comes home).

Honestly that's not what Jobs was afraid of. HTML5 is open source, and so is H.264 and if he was afraid of that those wouldn't be open source. I think honestly jobs didn't care at all about Android. This "competition" is what sells Android and iOS, and making it a war like enviroment will help their sales. If you were looking for a device you will probably get one or the other, and at some point of time you'll switch between the two just like you did Gerio I really feel it's just marketing between Google and Apple from the start of their partnership when Google had a chair in Apple.

Yeah I've noticed Apple is super picky about things going their way but I mean their products do back it up in a sense. I don't mind that at all considering what I'm getting. I agree with you, it just all depends on what someone likes. But it does bother me how Google does not check their app market (if I'm not mistaken) because a lot of the time corrupt apps can mess up your whole phone.

That was one of the major complaints about iTunes. People wanted everything and anything on the market and it should be up to them to pick and chose what they want. A lot of iOS/Apple activist said "What about Virus' and Malware?", and many people often replied "That's up to us to decide to install what we want, and when we want it." So Google listened, and now some people bring up "Carriers should pay or knock down charges because of ..... virus I got on my phone." Also poor coding causes it's own set of problems as you have mentioned. Apple goes through the code and if it's too buggy or causes problems before they release it they send it back. A lot of people complained about the approval process and that it takes "too long."

The closed ecosystem is a semi-good thing, but at the same time it's a bad thing as you can see. People tend to want their cake and eat it too. There has to be a little give and take for both sides, but the hardcore people tend to completely one sided just to justify what they buy.

I just got an iPhone 4 and loved the phone, unfortunately I could not use it. I had problems with the phone reception for making and receiving calls, so I had to go back to my android phone. It was NOT the phone but VZW service. I have found things that I liked about both phones. I would have liked to see the iphone 4 be lighter in weight and not have the glass cover on the back! The battery life was so much BETTER than any phone I have had for years.

So it appears that the Verizon network doesn't like your iPhone, but likes your Android phone just fine..

That sounds kinda odd, ya know...

Maybe I'm just lucky but the Verizon network seems to like my iPhone just fine. Actually....it likes it a lot more than it liked my last 2 BB's. Go figure...

And apparently, the network absolutely positively HATED the planet that the Bionics lived on, LOL.

I kind a like the Iphone Geri Hows the Call Quality on it so Far... I wanted the Rezound but i here Htc is having Some kind of issue with Earphones that Connect to it even the one's that are boxed with it. :smileysad: Bummer.... B33

For me, Ron, the iPhone has been perfect. Call quality has been fine. Not once has the data signal dropped. After being on for 3 straight days, it got a little glitchy a couple of days ago, but rebooting it solved the glitchiness. The battery life, while not great, is a tick better than the Bionic's was. So I'm good with the iPhone. My daughter and my girlfriend both have Droid Xs. But my daughter wound up with a iPhone last week and my girlfriend just tonight dropped a not-so-subtle hint that she wants one for Christmas. And they both wanted/want one for no other reason than they played with mine and liked it.

I have talked to a couple of folks that bought a Razr and a Reound and they like those phones very much, although they report (GASP) the occasional data signal drop...

I chalk the data loss to a being a whole new network compared to AT&T and T-Mobile they are using HSPA+ which is basically a firmware update to their existing 3G network. AT&T and T-Mobile had the growing pains when they deployed their 3G network(ironically it's WCDMA), and from what I was hearing AT&T is having some trouble with their LTE as well but since it's a slower deployment, and T-Mobile Acquisition talks it doesn't get the fanfair Verizon is getting with theirs.

Sometimes tried and true technology with a few years of work behind it is often always better. I think by the time 2013 rolls around Verizon should have it figured out. Sometime during 2012 hopefully :smileyhappy:

This is ONE of the reasons why Apple chose to forgo LTE right now as it is unproven to be reliable. Next year when they release the next version it may have LTE if Verizon and/or AT&T does well.

For me personally, Its not that I dont like iPhones rather I just prefer Andriod.

Reasons:

Screen Size: I went from an droid 1 to an incredible to a thunderbolt to a droid charge and I could never go back to a 3 inch screen.

iTunes/Downloading: I hate using iTunes. Honestly, I download most of my music from blogs and mixtape sites. Lots of underground music and I enjoy being able to download directly to my phone. I also enjoy the ease of drag and drop. If I vist a friend and he has a music collection that I like, I simply plug my standard usb port into his computer and drag and drop. Same thing for pictures, personal files, etc. With itunes, the only experience I have with it is when my girlfriend wants me to download her an album. Its not fun for me.

Flash: I visit tons of sites that use flash and this isnt available on the iPhone.

Google Navigation: I love it. What more else is there to say.

Now there are some things that I think the iPhone knocks out the park. I love their youtube app, I like their keyboard, I like their photo editing software and I like that fact that my girlfriends phone seems to never crash/freeze where as my Andriod does so atleast 1-2 times a month. However those are trade offs Im willing to accept for the benefits I listed above.

I have to admitt that siri does have me a little jealous but I'm sure google will answer that soon enough.

Charging ports: Micro USB has become the standard for almost all devices EXCEPT the iPhone. I enjoy being able to go to almost any friends house and asking if they have a micro usb charger and the chances of them having one I can use will be greater than an iPhone. Updates: Although updates thru andriod are slow and spread out, with the iphone the itunes update process is very time consuming. Typical update on an andriod is about 10-15 minutes. I updated my girlfriends iphone to ios5 and it took two hours. To itunes credit though I heard that with the new software the next upgrade will be over the air. But I havent seen that yet.

Now there are some things that I think the iPhone knocks out the park. I admit I don't have any experience with the Android Market, but Apple's App store also has a vast number of free apps. And like you mentioned, most of the major apps (like banking as you mentioned, many top games, etc) are free. I think that the argument about Apple's app store versus Android's Market is developer freedom since Apple requires that apps get approved before they can be offered in the app store.

As far as updates, yes with iOS 5 the ability to update OTA exists. I used it when updating to the latest update to iOS 5 and had absolutely no issues. Also, that update was far quicker than past updates. The amount of time iOS updates used to take varied for people, but if you had a lot of data on your device you were guaranteed to take longer than someone that had less. I think the OTA process might be quicker because it doesn't require the process of re-adding your data to your device from the backup created right before the new iOS update is installed.

Non-technically speaking, the reason I "didn't like" iphones was always the fact that 99% of the people that have them are arrogant, obnoxious "knuckleheads". It's well known that brainwashed and cultish are valid descriptions of that crowd.

Now, it's becoming clear that they are arrogant and obnoxious because their phones "just work" and they know it.

The technical arguments have been debated to the point that it's boring.

A common statement made in this forum is that mainly Android owners with issues (1-2% is a number that is thrown around) ever post here and that "most" Android owners are happy with their phones.

I suggest that 95% of phone owners don't know this forum exists and/or never use it.

How can we get a read on Android phones compared to iphones when it comes to customer satisfaction? Word of mouth.

In the past year, I know of at least a dozen people that had Android phones (various models, various carriers) that simply got fed up with the resets, reboots, bugs, glitches and purchased iphones.

NOW, at least I know some people that have iphones that aren't arrogant and obnoxious. Humbled, contrite, even embarrassed over all the arguments they got into defending Android.....maybe.

Maybe ICS will save the day, but after my experiences with my Droid X and the unmitigated flops that were the Thunderbolt and Bionic, something needs to change by my next upgrade, or I could also become a "cult member".

Defend Android all you want. Hate Apple. People just want a phone that works.

That's amusing to me...not because I'm an iPhone user or because I agree/disagree. I just think it's amusing to define a group of people (and place a percentage on it and call it a fact) based on the device they use...and this goes for any device/user combo. It's not world hunger, or the economy, but it makes good conversation.

The adjectives I refer to come from how many iphone owners have ZERO clues about other phones,yet dismiss them all, including BB, Windows, etc.

I know a decent amount about all. Not saying they should, but don't claim your phone is the best based on what you are told.

Example: An iphone fan I work with was ecstatic over the "new" Notification Bar coming to iOS. When I explained my Android has had this for over a year, he said, "I don't care".

Example 2: When I brought up widgets to an iphone person, he replied, "I don't know what they are and don't want to know".

In other words, the attitude of a lot of ifans is "when our leaders give it to us on our phones, THEN it becomes relevant".

Otherwise, yes it could be a coincidence that the people I've known, met, dealt with in business, etc, that have iphones are the way they are personality wise.

And another comment on the "cult" thing, which of course, is tongue-in-cheek. Google any of the new product "get togethers" at Apple, especially when the iphone was first released. Look at the facial expressions, excitement, almost to the point where "passing around the Kool-aid" seems likely.

Sure, it's normal to be stoked and excited about something you like (sports, music, electronics). Ifans just take it to another level. And as I've said, maybe that's because they are excellent products.

Sorry droidsw. Both sides can be cultish. Both sides have two sides of the spectrum. I seen both sides of the extreme and honestly they account for at best 10% of total users on each side.

With all due respect, Tidbits, (I should say) some Android owners are former iphone users and have a chip on their shoulder.

I came into the smartphone arena unbiased.

Iphone fans isolate themselves and don't care about other phone technology because they, like a cult, accept what they are given and are like sheep.

Android fans, on the other hand, often have their heads in the sand and refuse to acknowledge all the warts of Android, even when the "evidence" is all around them.

And cult members are rarely de-programmed. As I've mentioned, I know quite a few Android owners that have left for iphones. The other way around? It must happen, just not in my experiences, and the ones that have seem to have an axe to grind (not that they didn't like the phone).

But, I really don't know why they left Apple. We'd have to ask them. Former Android owners leave because of buggy, glitchy phones. So, one group is cultish, the other in denial. And one more thing in regards to everyday conversation about phones. It's better than talking about the weather...........but a lot like politics.

Yeah, specifically the "comet" cult near San Diego many years ago. The bizarre looks on the faces of the sheep in some of those Apple presentations reminded me of that bunch.

That's not completely true. I have seen Android users automatically call someone things based on the device they have without knowing the person. At my work place we have a variety of devices for development and I see it on a daily basis when customers come in. Sometimes that name calling and ridicule is what causes the "iCult" behavior. I have used Android long before Google purchased Android. I have also used the first generation iPhone. There is no difference to me on what someone wants to use. These types of discussions honestly is just to justify what one wants to use in 99% of the time.

I always say use what YOU want and don't give a rats behind on what other people say. They are not paying your bills and don't own your life. :smileyhappy:

I have used Android long before Google purchased Android. You were using Android in it's pre-alpha state? Google purchased android well prior to the release of the G1.

Maybe, their past experiences with folks that "use a certain device" have led them to form that opinion, so they expect them all to be the same?

Maybe, the cultish, grandiose attitudes of that bunch turn people off?

I agree though. My next phone may be iOS and I won't care what anyone thinks.

Android was around long before Google bought them. It is similar to how Meego is now. It was NEVER in alpha when Google bought them.

Honestly, I don't think the iPhone "cult" memebers are any different than any other "cult" memebers (for devices)....everybody wants to feel like they have the greatest...especially those that have the need to get the latest device no matter the cost. And...if whatever device they choose does what they need it to do and makes them happy then yes, they do have the best device....for them. Nothing wrong with that. It becomes extremely childish when it turns into some twisted "my device is better than yours and if you don't believe it then it's because you're brainwashed". If someone asked me about widgets...my answer would likely be "I don't really have a need or desire for widgets right now." I don't feel that way because Apple doesn't use them....I just genuinely don't have much interest in them. I don't even use the widgets on my PC and never have. Not saying they are bad or anything...they just don't sit high on my list....and if Apple suddenly started using them I would still be the same. And the Example you gave about the notification system....why would you want to deflate that persons joy? Your examples didn't imply that what you have is irrelevant because their "leaders" haven't given it to them yet but when they do then it will be. Unless you left out the part where the people in example 1 & 2 kept saying the Android was a less superior phone and spent endless time explaining why. It just sounds like person #1 was excitied about a new feature their device was getting...and you kind of (perhaps) rubbing it in that your device had the same thing for over a year made them respond with "I don't care". Person #2...they just told their truth...they didn't know what widgets were and didn't care. Unless they said when Apple puts it on the iPhone then I will care all I got from it is they just didn't care about widgets...

Point is...yes there are loyal Apple fans. Yes..there are loyal Android fans. But what everyone needs to accept is this...THERE IS NO "BEST" DEVICE. If there were then we wouldn't have so many new devices coming out on a regular bases. There is always something else that alleges to be better just around the corner. That's the joy of technology.

Actually...it would have helped a great deal if you had said the people in your examples belittled every other device but their own. Otherwise, your words have to be taken at face value OR the reader has to be someone that assumes that just because the people in your example are iPhone users they are automatically arrogant and obnoxious. Because I (and I truly hope I'm not the only person) don't assume anything about anyone just because they use any device there was no way for me to automatically know that those people were anything but what your typed words said (excited about an update to their device and not very interested in a feature you mentioned to them).

And just so that we are clear...I did NOT defend anyone...it's difficult to defend people that I have never laid eyes on. All I stated was that barring you leaving out some information that would create a different scenario than you described (which is what you did by not making it clear that your examples were "arrogant and obnoxious") that there didn't seem to be anything that warranted cult-like behavior. I'll assume you are making the same blanket opionion of myself based on your "No surprise you defend them" comment solely because I own an iPhone. You're entitled to your opinion...when it's based on something real. I'm a lot of things...that I will own and admit without an ounce of hesitation. But I guarantee you that you will not find a single person that has actually laid eyes on me in the real world (I won't even give the distinction of actually KNOWING me because it doesn't take truy knowing a person for anyone to garner any opinion about them....but it's impossible to have an opinion about someone based solely on what phone they use because you read about it on an internet forum) that will say their opinion about me is based on me using an iPhone. Why? Because I don't care what phone I have unless I had to accept or make a phone call or the person met me while I was playing a video game or something in a waiting room they wouldn't know what phone I have without asking me in some random conversation. I have never been a part of the "look at what I have" crowd...most people don't know I have an iPhone even when they see me using it because none of it's tell-tell signs are visable (no one sees the apple logo, no one sees the metal siding...other than the fact that it's a touch screen that's all you can easily identify on my phone unless you really look at it and pay attention to the shape of the case (excluding if for some reason the main scream is illuminated...then that's obvious)...and I'm still often asked "Is that an iPhone?"...more people seem surprised I covered it up instead of making sure everyone saw it's "sexiness" (yes, someone actually said that to me...which made me look at them like THEY were insane).

Now, in my experience...the only cult-ish people I have come across were not in the "real" world...it's been on forums like this...the only obnoxious because they think their phone is better than anyone else's...again, on forums like this. The only place I have ever seen Android vs iPhone e-fights....on the internet! And...trust me...the cult like behavior is not in the least bit lopsided. Go to any iPhone forum or an article that discusses anything about the iPhone and the "I hate iPhones and all things Apple" rhetoric is astronomical...the sentiment is fine if that's the way you feel. The obsurdity is the fact that if you feel that way why in the world do you bother going to forums and articles that are clearly about the device and company you don't care for? (and "you" is general...sometimes that needs to be pointed out or people take offense and think something is being directed at them). Same thing to any die-hard Apple fan....if you refuse to even acknowledge the exisitence of anything not made by Apple...why are you lurking around on Android sites trying to stir the pot? People seem to be far more willing to do these childish and petty things at the comfort of their well hidden internet safety net (via a computer or their "better than anyone else's" device). iphone sales are insane so i would never say people don't like iphones. what you see are the "fanboys" (on both sides....apple and android). those are the annoying folks. i say to each their own. i prefer android. i recommend iphone to my family members because i find it much more simple and easy to use. both have their pros and cons. thiat being said, i do LOVE the new samsung ad as it shows the type of fanboys that annoy us (again, there are fanboys on both sides):

I own an Iphone 4s and a Motorola Droid X and the tech guy. The one who likes to tinker and tweak likes the Droid X but the frustrated user of an android based phone likes the reliability and simplistic nature of an Iphone. Currently have the cell service setup on the Iphone and the Droid X is used on wifi. I use them both daily. The droid X is used to search other android forums looking for tips and tweaks. The iphone is used to make the calls... text... run apps that i can`t on my droid. Some apps i prefer to run on one versus the other. I like the bigger screen on the X but enjoy the clarity of the Iphone. Do i have a choice of which is a better platform? Nope. I love them both.

I DON'T base my opinions of any person specifically because of the phone they own. What I have noticed is that when a particular co-worker, neighbor, client, etc. is arrogant, obnoxious, stubborn, or unreasonable in general.........many times they most invariably JUST HAPPEN to own iphones.

Lumping you in their group by making the "not surprise you defend them" comment was the expected response when an Android owner makes an observation about iphone users in general and an iphone owner (you) defends them. But back to the topic of "phone conversations".

A co-worker recently changed carriers and left his old iphone3 behind and got an Android (EVO, I think). It was purely for a better family package and the cheap Android phones the carrier was pushing. He has no axe to grind and we never really discussed phones before he told me this. And, no he isn't obnoxious or arrogant, so he falls outside the "general assumptions I make about all people that use iphones".

I asked him today. "How was the weekend? Watch any football? How is that Android phone working for you?"

He replied, "It's just OK. I kind of miss my old iphone. This Android phone is just slow, doesn't respond, locks up and I have to reboot it".

THAT is the perfect evaluation of the Android experience (in my opinion).

My point?

I think Android has issues (that is for anothersection of the forum). I think my next phone will probably be iOS. I am NOT TOO PROUD to admit that.

I didn't "come into this section looking to pick a fight". My personal observations are/were that my previous disdain for iphones had nothing to do with the devices themselves, but the people that many times I encounter than JUST HAPPEN to own them.

We aren't writing dissertations that will solve the recession or cure diseases. We are yapping about phones. It's a discussion forum and really shouldn't be taken seriously.

When the time comes to choose my next phone, of course my decision won't be influenced by who else owns a particular phone.

The OP asked why people don't like iphones. I gave my experiences how a lot of people I've come in contact with that own them are (to prevent the inevitable edit) "knuckleheads" and how THAT has molded my opinion of the phone.

Obviously, they all had more in common than the cell phone they happen to own. And yes, with so many iphones out there, odds are they will end up in the hands of a lot of knuckleheads.

True, some Android owners are, no doubt, knuckleheads too and some may even act like cult members. That just hasn't been my experience.

I'm not sure how far back we're talking...but my first iPod was the iPod mini (which was eventually replaced by the Nano...I actually liked my mini but it was ancient compared to the things iPods and other mp3's do now)...and it didn't have to be married to one computer unless you had it set to autosync...in which case yes, it would delete everything you had on it and start as new if you tried syncying with a different computer. iTunes is far better than it used to be...especially in regards to managing music you purchased from iTunes and want to convert to a different format. Once upon a time that was a task to do (as mentioned before, you had to burn the songs to a CD and then re-sync them...and there was a limit to how many times a song could be burned to disc via iTunes...which was meant to curb piracy I guess). I also think that once upon a time there were less formats that would play correctly on iPods...or there were specific parameters that if weren't met would cause issues.

I think the only real problem or dislike I had with iTunes had to do with movies/videos and not being able to burn them to DVD to view on a DVD player. This was before there were HDMI ports on laptops to at least give you the option of hooking the computer to your HD tv and viewing that way (although there were other hook-up alternatives for some computers). This is why I have never paid directly for a movie in iTunes (although I have several due to purchase of DVD/Blu-Ray combo packs that included them). I'm not sure if this is something that is iTunes specific though...I never investigated since I have always been good at finding DVD's and Blu-Ray discs at great sale prices far cheaper than it would be do buy the digital copy. Plus, I'm not a fan of watching movies on a really small device on a regular basis. My only other "dislike" wasn't really iTunes specific at all...it was digital media in general. The need to constantly back-up your media for fear of losing it in the event of your computer crashing or you losing your device. The number of discs used to backup (I have a huge library) over the years became a space issue lol. Yes, I have also used external hard drives, but I would still backup to disc also as extra insurance. I actually miss the good old days of actual CD's with jewel cases and a booklet you can actually hold in your hands lol. I will still buy a real CD if it's one I actually like the bulk of...which seems to be rare now, but that's a totally different gripe.

I am an android user, so I really shouldn't mock my cult, but... on one of the forums where iphone vs android came up, one user explained something like "Last night I was bored, so I flashed a new ROM onto my .... Couldn't do that on a [expletive used for iPhone]" My immediate thought was "What a life". Not much different from iPhone users putting the latest fart app on their phone when bored, or me posting in the forum I guess!

Screen Size: I went from an droid 1 to an incredible to a thunderbolt to a droid charge and I could never go back to a 3 inch screen. I agree with you on that one. I would like a 4 inch iphone and nothing bigger than that. I think the iphone 5 will have a larger 4 inch screen.

Charging ports: Micro USB has become the standard for almost all devices EXCEPT the iPhone. I enjoy being able to go to almost any friends house and asking if they have a micro usb charger and the chances of them having one I can use will be greater than an iPhone. ALTHOUGH the battery life on a iPhone is better so that may make this point null for some. I have screen shots of getting a full day of ACTUAL usage on my iphone 4. I am not talking unplugged, I am talking actual usage. I really do not need a charger to charge my phone almost all of the time. Having said that, I was at my brother the other day and needed some juice. His daughter had an ipod (who doesn't) so I used the sync cable and plugged into his computer. Done.

Pricing: I have no problem paying 299.99 for my 4g droid charge but I do have a problem with apple charging 100.00 for 16 gb of memory when I can go on amazon and get a 16 gb card for 10.00-15.00 dollars. You need an SD card with the Charge because the internal memory on that thing is beyond pathetic. You have little to no internal memory. That is not a problem even with the 8 gig iphone. Besides an SD card creates a host of communication problems that the OS has to deal with between the internal memory and the SD card. Go read the Bionic and Atrix forums and how the apps disappear once installed on the SD card. Thanks but no thanks. ONE solid memory location is plenty for me. KISS. It works

Apps: I appreciate the free apps on Andriod. I read somewhere that 80% of the apps are free. Alot of people talk about quality but Ive found that most of the major apps (banking,top games, entertainment,etc) are very similar. You have to pay for quality and clean apps. Apple keeps a tight control on the app approval process to maintain quality. Quality costs money. You have to pay to play.

Flash: I visit tons of sites that use flash and this isnt available on the iPhone. If you haven't heard but flash for mobile is DEAD. It will not be made anymore. It seems that Adobe now agrees with Jobs that flash is clunky and slows down mobile operations. HTML5 is the future just like Jobs said. Jobs has the last laugh on this one. He is smiling from above.

Google Navigation: I love it. What more else is there to say. I have Motion X and it is as good as Google Nav. I have to pay 0.99 cents for the app. You can get the Free MapQuest app. Also works. Both have turn-by-turn voice navigation. Soon though, maybe by iOS 6 Apple will have its own native navigation on the iPhone. It will be stunning. Just wait and see.

Updates: Although updates thru andriod are slow and spread out, with the iphone the itunes update process is very time consuming. Typical update on an andriod is about 10-15 minutes. I updated my girlfriends iphone to ios5 and it took two hours. To itunes credit though I heard that with the new software the next upgrade will be over the air. But I havent seen that yet. This is not a problem anymore as of iOS 5. I updated OTA and it took 10-15 minutes tops. I would still use itunes to get my updates though. Less likley for things to go wrong.

P.S.

I have to admitt that siri does have me a little jealous but I'm sure google will answer that soon enough.

I am like you. I like them both. I am looking into picking up a used Droid X so I can tinker with it. I will keep my iphone for the daily chores that require the "just works" iphone dependability (this is my only phone line).

The display size argument is all about personal preference (as is this entire debate).

Android had the better idea to offer larger displays. Apple's track record hints that they will concede and increase theirs, if only slightly.

Swype is great, but perhaps I have worn out my display because it is horribly inaccurate anymore and I often end up manually inputting words, so I might as well peck peck away on an iphone without Swype.

I rip most of my music off my own CDs and I've never dealt with iTunes, but downloading from Amazon for this (Android phone) and then to my computer for back-up seems like a step or two redundant.

Maybe people DO want fast and easy.

The app situation isn't that black and white, Gerio. Weather Channel, Fox News, CNN, etc., are different than "Hot Calender Girls" apps. You expect the former not to cause issues (and they have on my phone) and know that the latter is questionable (for one's phone, that is).

Also, how reliable are app reviews when 90-95% of my peers with the same phone never had the issues that I had?

Now, if I PAID for most of my apps, like I understand a lot do with iphones, I would expect a better app product.

Memory hasn't been an issue, but I suppose you pay for what you need.

The debate goes on.

As an over middle aged ADDer I adore my I-phone. Had to save up to actually use it as a PHONE, lol! but I've used it as a pda since and the kindle ap font is better than the actual kindle. I'm just now using it as a phone and love it. don't carry around the two phones. All my notes, (instead of books and posties) in one place. For an ADDer, that is very important. I know the other phones have these options, but the way it's layed out is just perfect for me. I need a light touch, which I know irritates some others. This is the first I've heard of it needing anti-virus ware. I naively assumed that the marketplace would have checked the aps for viruses. Thanks! I'll be careful about what I download. I had compases, notebooks and various other things that aps now replace in my purse/luggage, lol! I just wish these companies would have family share or device/share data packages so I can get my i-pad and stay with verizon. I did get a good deal at a mall kiosk on my data package which customer service couldn't give me. Now I can use my I-phone because of it. Hope the powers-that be get the message! - Linda

"Choice" means little when you lose your personal "stuff" every time you have to do a hard reset and you have the fun of recreating all your folders, homescreens, etc.

i understand. that's why much earlier in this thread i stated that i prefer android.....but i tell my family members to get an iphone. they don't want to mess with custimizing, 3rd party launchers, widgets, etc (much less flashing roms). my experience has been 2 years of a great experience, but i know that's not the case for everyone.

one other thing that nobody has mentioned is accessories. there are some more aoption for androids now than a couple of years ago.....but for the most part, other manufacturers design accessories for the iphone. with MANY cool items out there, you can actually dock the iphone, where you have to use an auxillary input for an android (car stereos, speaker docks, alarm clocks, etc, etc)

People have messaged me privately and even come right out and said it before in another forum. The only true Android experience is through rooting.

Do you have to jailbreak an iphone to make it work reliably? My understanding is people jailbreak just to get the customization that they can't otherwise get and CAN get on Android phones.

Since both are not allowed, the point is probably mute and subject to censorship, but if it takes rooting a phone to make it function properly, something is wrong....Moto.

Can anyone comment as to whether moisture (rain, sweat, a wet hand from touching a glass of iced tea) causes the display on iphones to go completely bonkers like the display on my Droid X?

I finally was able to upgrade from my Droid 2. I frankly liked the phone when it worked, but that was something that hit and miss. Crashed and rebooted almost every day. Verizon had to replace the phone several times because it outright failed (that was a Droid, eventually they gave me a Droid 2 which did not have any catastrophic failures)

After looking at the top end Android phones, I decided they were too big and that I was sick of all the issues I had with my Droid (my wife's Droid was not as bad as mine, but was still trouble).

I activated my iPhone last night. Still getting used to it, but I can say this, it just works. No crashes today. It was fairly intuitive to use. There are definitely some quirks (I cannot figure out how to have no tone when receiving text while still having the phone vibrate). Battery life does not appear to be great, but I've adjusted some settings and seems to be a bit better now but I'll withhold judgment on this (critical) issue.

Choose the "none" text tone in settings and make sure you have the Vibrate turned on. I have both of them on...the one under silent and the one that does it with the sound. If choosing the "none" tone doesn't male it work as you like then you can make a silent ringtone and then set that one. In that case, it will work because I did this for my moms phone. Battery life does not appear to be great, but I've adjusted some settings and seems to be a bit better now but I'll withhold judgment on this (critical) issue.

Your workaround for getting the phone to be silent while vibrating for texts works like a charm. Thanks. Also, I'm pleased to report that after initially thinking the battery life on the iPhone was no good, now that I have used it for a while, I can report that battery life is actually quite good, and defiitely considerably better than my old Droid 2 with the extended battery.

I had an iPhone 4s. I went to the Verizon store yesterday after looking over the 2 newest android devices, the Nexus and Rezound. I chose the Rezound because of all the reviews I've read on it. I've had android devices in the past, so I thought I'd try them again. Complete fail. I have no way of putting my iTunes music on the phone and my favorite app, the Dish Network app doesn't work on the new phone. So, I'll be off to the Verizon store in a couple of days to trade back into an iPhone. iPhones just simply work. Never had an issue with mine and it had the best signal of any phone I've ever used in my house. I would go back to the iPhone 4s I had but, my son decided he wanted to get away from android, so he acquired it from me.

Sounds like you are trolling, as both statements that you made are not true. i Tunes can be put on Android, and Dish network works great on the Rezound. If you are going to troll, at least get your facts straight.

As far as the iTunes part...you're right unless that user was trying to use older iTunes purchases that won't transfer as easily. It can still be done but they would have to burn those tracks to CD and re-import them or pay the $0.30 per song fee to ugrade those tracks. Anyone with old iTunes purchases and more recent ones {recent meaning in the last few years since iTunes changed drm on purchases} can easily tell which tracks would give them a problem. Old ones would have "Protected AAC audio" versus "Purchased AAC audio". The protected ones can't be converted directly in iTunes while the ones that are labeled Purchased can.

One simple method is to take you un drm iTunes aac file and convert them to mp3.

Then you can upload them to a cloud service such as Amazon and download the albums or individual songs onto the android phone.

That said, using IOS5 is a snip because I can directly access my iTunes music I have purchased through the iCloud, and download the music to my phone or tablet.

I think the better question is, "Why do people like the iphone so much?" At the risk of inviting argument it would be more accurate to ask why they blindly follow apple. Before buying my daughter her Zune I did much research and and found blind love for the apple product, just as I see for the iphonys. What I mean by blind love is numerous issues that would have left any non-apple product impaled on a pike and writhing until death were merely a minor annoyance because it was an apple product. One example was the wifi network password was forgotten by the apple product after about 24 hours, but it wasn't too much of an annoyance. If that had been the Zune, or any other manufacturer for that matter, the product would have been a piece of junk for losing the wifi password, but not the apple, it was okay. Or when jobs unveiled I believe ti was the iphony 3 and couldn't get a signal and blamed the media covering the event. And the same iteration of the iphone had antenna issues that limited signal strength when phone was held GASP! as a phone is naturally held, by the sides.

So the real question is why do "experts" and consumers accept mediocrity from apple but demand perfection from others to even be held as equals? Simple answer is double standards.

"Blind love" is in the eye of the beholder, as well as in the mind of someone using the term to make his or her argument.

I fail to see why folks like you have to make the case one way or the other. I was an Android guy, until I got sick and tired of freezing/reboots/dropped calls and data disconnects. So what? And frankly, I disagree with your blanket statements. The Apple folks overlooking the forgotten wifi password or AntennaGate (when I was Android and taking note of that issue and Jobs' ridiculous "solution". Of course not) makes as much sense as all of the Android guys and their "oh, Android phones' issues are mostly user error". Guess that would depend on who the consumers are. Yes, there are loyalist of every brand (Android/Droid loyalist that will remain despite any negative they notice...but willingly state they will accept that indescretion as long as they have the freedom to sideload apps/etc...Toyota loyalist that ignore serious recall issues or increased problems because despite that they feel like Toyota is the best...etc). I honestly don't think that iPhone/Apple has more loyalist than any other brand...but I do think the odd "hate" between iPhone users and non-iPhone users is ridiculously high. If you don't like the iPhone that's your perogative, but what is the fascination with repeatedly referring to it as the iPhony?

Now the answer to your question "why do people like the iPhone so much?" has just as many answers as there are for why anyone likes anything. I have said before and I'll say it again...I'm in no way an Apple or iPhone loyalist. This is my 1st iPhone. I haven't been craving the iPhone for years and upset that it took VZW so long to get it. I wasn't willing to jump ship to AT&T just because they had it and sacrifice actual service just to have it (for some, AT&T works great for them. My personal experience and the service in my area with AT&T is not as good as VZW). I do own iPods, but the reason is simple. They work the way I need them to and I haven't experienced any issues with them. For people like myself (1st time iPhone owners) the "blind love" theory doesn't apply. Yet, those that feel strongly that iPhone users are loyalist don't seem to see it that way. It's assumed that if you have an iPhone you are a follower, you believe anything Steve Jobs ever said, you are "drinking the Apple Kool-Aid"....the list goes on and on. I'm pretty sure that there are plenty of people that owned the the previous iPhone models and experienced any of the issues you mentioned that jumped ship as soon as possible and never looked back. There are also a lot of iPhone haters that have never actually owned an iPhone themselves and have only repeated the negative things they have heard about or read about (that didn't necessarily happen to every iPhone owner) to fuel their hatered. Same thing goes for anti-Android people. The double standards you mentioned exist no matter what side of the fence you're on. The REAL question is why are so many people intent on being a hater on extreme levels when it comes to anything they choose not to use? If you don't like it and you are happy with something else then that's great. But knocking others because they choose to use and enjoy using something you frown your nose upon is using a lot of energy for something that affects no one else. That goes for iPhone loyalist, Android loyalist, rotary phone enthusiast...even the hermit that sits in his basement and communicates via Morse Code.

BTW...maybe the problems you listed all related to past iPhone models, but I haven't experienced any of those issues so is it possible that the iPhone has gotten better...just like any device created is expected to do with each newer version? I have never had a Zune product and never had an interest in one, but I never considered it a piece of junk or lesser than an iPod. It's just that when I received my 1st iPod it worked well for me so I stuck with it. In that case, why would I try another brand if the one that I was using already fit my needs? To me, that's probably the mindframe of the majority of consumers. Not everyone is a tech fanatic or enjoy purchasing new devices on a regular basis. Some rely on the advice of those around them (if your friends/family had a positive experience with a product you are more apt to consider that item) in addition to OR more than they rely on online reviews, "expert" reviews, or forum debates. I currently enjoy my iPhone, but who knows what I'll want to upgrade to when the time comes. If the next iPhone interests me when I'm eligible for an upgrade, I'll consider it. If something else interests me, I'll consider that also. Since Apple doesn't pay my bills or put food on my table my loyalty to them is about the same as it is to anything else. If it fits my needs then it gets a shot at my consumer dollars. What anyone else does with their money is up to them.

Quite frankly, I have no interest in an iPhone and I can almost guarantee that I never will because I don't need it. It's plain and simple in my case. I don't understand the concept of texting. I think texting is such a waste of time and I keep my cell phone off almost all the time - it's for emergencies only. I don't want to be bothered once I leave the house. I need the privacy and freedom of going about my business and nobody ever has to reach me that desperately. There is no logical reason for me to invite people to bug me whenever they want, whether I'm going to work or in a rest room or shopping at a mall or supermarket. Why does everything have to be so instantaneous? I like the delayed gratification involved in telling someone at the end of my day how my day went. And email I don't have to constantly check when I'm not home. It will be there when I return just like a voice mail message.

I'm not going to be bogged down by some little device like that which can distract my attention from what is around me. Honestly, it's an invention from Jobs that I feel is one of the most useless for me personally. I personally wasn't impressed with any of news commentaries about him. I like being able to think and reflect before I say the wrong thing just in general and it's really kind of frightening how that kind of skill seems to be getting lost with the younger generations of children and younger adults, not to mention the everyday "give and take" of real face-to-face contact in person or voice-to-voice contact over the telephone. For any kind of little device which still is not a necessity for me personally to consume people that much is really pretty sad. It's taking away people's patience and encouraging more people to stay in their own little worlds and to stay more self-absorbed and saying whatever they want when they want. People have to be able to listen to others and consider other people's feelings but with all of these little devices, it really breaks down that expectation even further, not to mention that without hearing the tone of voice, written words can sometimes be misconstrued even more. That's my opinion.

And I'll tell you one thing I despise whether you're talking about cell phones or iPhones - people talking so loudly and blabbing their personal business in public areas with no respect for their own privacy and for other people's needs to go about their business without hearing all of that. I can't stand hearing that stuff in a public restroom. It's very rude and disrespectful and that's something I was never raised to do. It's inconsiderate. I still haven't forgotten this one lady at a CD store who was pacing back and forth talking so loudly so that everyone could hear about her bodily functions and she just didn't care.

So iPhones can go down the toilet as far as I'm concerned. All any corporation or inventor has to do is create a need and "voila"...suddenly everyone needs this extra little thing that nobody ever needed before in a hundred years.

I don't even care for iPods. I need to hear what's going on around me and that really could become a safety issue when you're on the streets.

In your case, you are talking about any device that allows you to do any of the things you say you have no interest or need in. Nothing wrong with that. Some people really do just want a phone that allows them to make and receive calls. Nothing extra. But, non of what you said applies to just the iPhone. It applies to virtually every current phone on the market. I can't think of a single cellphone that doesn't have tha ability to text. Steve Jobs and the iPhone aren't responsible for that so the iPhone isn't the only device to fall into your category of something you're not interested in. People talking loudly...that has nothing to do with the device. That's the people using it...no matter what phone they are using they will talk loudly if that is the type of person that they are. iPods...they aren't the only music players out there and weren't the first to create the possible safety issues you mentioned. Think back to the old school Sony WalkMan...that was long before an iPod or MP3 Player was even a dream.

Ultimately, it just sounds like you're anti modern day technology. Again, nothing wrong with that, but focusing solely on the iPhone, iPod, and Steve Jobs as if those are the only things associated with the things you listed is a little over the top.

I don't think "tech" has a lot to do with it. I'd venture that more than 50% of iphones are purchased for brand name only, like Gucci, Armani, etc. That's not a bad thing, as it refers to quality and reputation.

Of course, that is not a scientific statement, only my opinion.

And I've been down this road before, but what amazes me during conversations with some iphone users is how little they know about their phones and phones, in general.

Strike up a conversation with the stereotypical iphone toting soccer mom, or even an everyday Joe about user interfaces, internal memory or amoled vs. retina displays. Most are clueless.

Perhaps, many Android and Windows phone users view many iphone users as superficial, only purchasing the phones for status reasons, like a shiny new watch.

That is the place it has in popular culture.

That said, and my previous observations about iphones and personalities of those that often use them aside; I digress and say I don't care if my Aunt Fanny uses one because all her friends at her weekly wine tasting social do, also. I want a phone that works without bugs and glitches.

If ICS and the phones coming soon don't change the Android experience for the better, I may be getting one of the shiny status symbols myself.

At least people won't snicker when they overhear me cussing like they do now when my phone locks up.

Gerio, a buddy of mine was one of the first on the smartphone train. I'd mock him for it, yet often ask him to look something up on Google, or the weather, or an address. It was SO darned convenient.

I resisted at first and my Droid X was my first smartphone in Aug '10. That iphone 3 seemed so small it defeated the very purpose of a smartphone. Why have one with such a small display?

That and the jerkitude I encountered from a lot of people that used them.

My buddy started with an iphone, but by the time I purchased my X, he had switched to Android and was very convincing. My choice was ultimately largely influenced by the large display and (at that time) superior technical specs of the X. And, his influence.

I have shared how his experience with a Thunderbolt turned him sour on Android and he went back to an iphone (4S).

In the spirit of full disclosure, his wife has had a Droid X and she loves it. Go figure smartphones.

I'd love it if my next phone was an ICS phone that wasn't the buggy glitchy phone this one has been. I would probably go from disappointed and pessimistic to enthusiastic (again).

It would be so foreign to me to own an iphone because I honestly prefer Android.

I am new to iPhone and I typically rely on the silent vibrate mode to detect an incoming call. The vibrate mode on iPhone is too mild making it hard to detect unless iPhone is in shirt pocket and even then it is hard to detect if busy with another activity. Someone should invent an ear placed bluetooth connected tone generator or vibration generator for better call detection. My previous Blackberry was much better in this mode.

I'm not sure but there may already be bluetooth earpieces that will play a tone when receiving a call or vibrate. You can do a search to see if that already exists.

I don't like the screen size. Don't like the 30% cut that Apple Inc demands. Don't like the forced use of the Apple stores for things like books. Don't like how Steve and Apple are settings up themselves up with a monopoly.

While I might not like everything that Microsoft has done their open attitide towards software and hardware for Windows OS has been a blessing for many companies over the years.

I can't speak for the other things, but this is just not true. You are able to install a Kindle App on the iPad, iPhone, iPod and purchase your books through Amazon if you so wish. I believe there is also an app for the Nook, but I can't guarantee that.

Yes, there is a Nook app (I have had it installed for awhile). The app did change a while back...you can't purchase books directly from the app anymore but you can access any of your nook books/magazines/newspapers via the app and do other functions. At least that is the case for the Nook app on the iPhone...might be different on the iPad (or maybe not). Point being...you aren't FORCED to use the Apple iBook store for books like Joe stated.

I don't think it is so much the iPhone itself, more a hate of Apple. I can't really blame anyone for hating apple.

Apple is the only company that can get away:

with releasing a device with a known issue (iphone 4 antenna)
have reputable sources confirm the issue
delete the posts from their own message boards where users try to discuss the issue
deny there is a problem publicly
have the nerve to blame the user (your holding it wrong)
Hold a press conference to tell everyone there isn't any problem, but we're going to give everyone a case for free...
Have users not care because it's "cool" to have an iphone.. Just like a BMW or Mercedes... (Too bad both are ranked around 20th place in reliability)

Apple stands for the opposite of the liberty's that 90 out of 100 American's claim to be willing to die for, Freedom of speech, Religion, even some privacy. But people line in up in droves to hand their opinions and morality over to apple, who I'm sure has the users best interest in mind, yeah right.

You set a precedent when you let let them decide what is moral for you (siri won't pull records or give directions for abortion related facility's). We've found this out, what else are they deciding for you. What's worse is that other company's are watching, they see apple's success and start analyzing it. They start plans in motion to take choice away from you.

I can't say that they are the first or only company to do this. But I think they have been the most successful at it and no one seems to care...

I am an Android user, and I don't agree with what you just typed...

I could give various reasons why, but I don't feel like writing a 100page essay tonight.

I knew as soon as i seen the title of the headline that there was going to be a lot posted on this one. I work in a call center as tech support for a cell company that i cannot name but I must admit i get a lot enjoyment out of reading your guys' trolling on each other. This has been one of my favorites. I personally have a regular basic phone, but i will admit that i personally prefer the droid over the iphone. I have many reasons and i am in no way one to say that one is just plain better than the other. Its very easy to say one is better but in what way is either of them "better"? Sure the day the iphone 4s is had the worst stats of any of the phones. Iphone 4s 1.0gh All the newer droids are running 1.2gh razr, nexus 1.5gh spectrum, rezound. Processor alone only one recent droid has a processor that small. The bionic which most of the people on this forum seem to agree to be a flop. Ram, its retina screen, network speeds. Sure its all towards the bottom iphone wise but is that really that big of a deal even though the phone retails for almost twice what those droids do? Does that make it a worse phone? I hear a lot of talk on this forum about their droid x failing or their droid 2. That does not define droid as a whole. Let it be known that on the verizon network ALONE there are over 60 android operated devices currently being carried around the U.S. today. Made by at least 8 different companies. Of those there are bound to be flops. The term droid really refers to any of those. Not just the ones made by motorola. Iphone has really only made 3 basic models with "upgrades" The iphone original was revolutionary. When it came out it was by far the best thing on the market at the time IN MY OPPINION. But however it is possible that the fame has went to their heads since then the competition has risen to the challenge and iphone refuses to compete. (i.e. the lack of flash compatibility, smaller cpu, ram) I will admit that they are good at ad's though. I havent seen a movie in at least 3 years now that had a computer in it that WASN'T a mac. So am I to believe that literally all normal people in movies are expected to have a mac in general when most of the populace dont even know what a "finder" is(mac term im bilingual for computers :smileyhappy:) That is the brainwashing that I see people post on here. If they invested half of the money spent on ad's on the device this forum wouldnt exist because droid blackberry and even windows phones(had to throw them in there the trophy isnt half bad) would have went out of business years ago.(especially in movies do know how much it costs to put that apple symbol in a movie? the director obviously zooms out in all these movie so you can see the iconic symbol with all the movie stars gathered around it). Also with the iphone and droid debate i see a lot of people referring to past droids as the experience base for carrying the iphone torch. I can understand that. If a phone is bad get rid of it. Simple as that. However if you are going to bring up bad blood on old phones surely all of the iphone cult worshippers (not saying all the people here are cult worshippers but you gotta admit there are some from both sides this particular statement is for the iphone worshippers though) know of all the iphone issues as well dont you? Just on xmas day alone 2 weeks ago not a single iphone activation worked country wide because apple never invested enough money into itunes servers to handle that many peoples information. Or maybe if they didnt need your life history age address blood type etc etc it would have worked. Also most people dont realize this but did you know that an iphone fresh out of the box does not activate without internet? The internet on the phone isnt enough. Want to video chat with that awesome facetime feature on your iphone that you got it for while youre away for work? nope. requires wifi and you didnt pick the hotel with the pool and hot tub and free wifi. Droid can do it without wifi. Its best recommended on 4G for best service. Otherwise its RECCOMENDED to use wifi. But droid doesnt tell you where you can and cant go with your phone to do what you want. But does that make it worse? No not at all. Isnt it odd that people bring up glitchness or dropped calls on the iphones and that "it works" mentality seems to be the reason for buying one of the most expensive phones on the market. Historically many more droids have worked than iphones. Heck the Iphone 3g and 3gs had the imfamous "you must be holding your phone wrong is why you cant make or receive calls" thats a 3rd of all the iphones!!!! ok the iphone is running a 66% on the pass fail ratio. The current iphone 4 and 4s arent perfect. Their speakers go out if you listen to music without the headphones(yes you can only listen to music a certain way on a phone based on ipod technology), the screens get a weird pinkish haze on certain sections of the screen for some reason(usually because you breathed on it to wipe screen and it put some moisture under the glass), itunes has nationwide outages all the time practically once a month, the non adjustable touch screens are so sensitive that a lot of people call in because theyre face dialing nonstop, the list goes on but im not on either side remember? Im merely stating facts about both phones. Its up to you to decide which is better. Does that make it a worse phone? Of course not? And before anyone hops on here and freaks about anything i say. research exactly what i typed. Most of it is common knowledge or is easily found on these very forums in fact under the tech support issues section. Theres a lot more to both sides of the argument. I merely laid it out there all at the same time. Its up to you to decide.

Warning to the readers:From here on there is some opinion: I'm sure theres going to be a lot of people mad saying "well your subject is obviously geared towards the droid against iphone" well if you think so thats your oppinion. I merely stated facts about both and said "does that make it a worse phone?" at the end of them. If youre going to refer to one particular phone like iphone 4s rather than all iphones or a particular droid rather than all droids? thatll have to be a dif post. In my oppinion yes iphone 4S is better in some ways to some current droids out there. Do i believe there to be similarly priced droids that blow the iphone 4S out of the water in every way possible that a phone can "defeat" another phone (reliability price speed both network and phone in general better use of the apps location app store, and even ease of use). Explanations below:

app store does have a lot of free apps but way too many charge, true droid market has more glitchy apps but big deal if you get a bad app why not just delete the stupid thing and get another free one? it takes like moments, some apps will lock ur phone or hurt your phone but very RARE there are certain perimiters in your phone that even apps cant go past just start the phone in safe mode(chances are for you model is just hold the volume keys when you start your phone) easy as pie. For ease of use, yes i believe that a droid can be much easier to use if customized correctly and yes your local store will customize it for you free of charge and if they wont there are workshops that will free, lots of droid users have the luxury of not even needing to use the menu or have to scroll. Just unlock the phone and do what you want to. No customization for iphone means theres a lot more that you have to learn. You have to memorize the whole phone rather than doing what you think is right to get to where you want to go on the phone. Lot of info and my grammar is probably outrageous and i apologize for it. The tech side of it is ridiculous to argue, when the average person wouldn't be able to tell one processor from another.

The software side, you made too simplistic. It may "take seconds" to uninstall an Android app that is causing problems with your phone, but when the average person has 50-100 installed, it gets a little time consuming. (I don't have that many).

I refer to my experiences with one Android device, but also draw from what I read here and other places.

Maybe, I have a "grass is greener" mindset.

I just don't recall a friend, co-worker, etc., attempting to show me a photo, or video, and their Gallery (or the iphone equivalent) won't respond, phone won't decide on landscape or portrait, or flat out freezes up.

That happened again to me this morning, showing an iphone user some photos. "Nice phone", he said, and laughed. (We have been round and round in the Android vs. iphone discussion).

I haven't given up on Android and that's mostly because of the reading I've been doing, like your post. Iphones have warts, too.

And, yes your post will get flamed. Opinion gets flamed.

There is no "best phone", just personal experiences and yes, opinions.

Warning to the public: The following contains opinions, and as such should be taken as such. It makes no promises or references to any database of any kind and should not be taken as such. It is the belief of its author and nothing more.

In reference to my statement "takes seconds" i do apologize for over simplifying. I really meant for the general populace it takes seconds to replace the bad app because even if you do have even 100 apps. chances are your phone didnt really glitch(i mean the painful super glitches where you have to start phone in safe mode by holding down volume keys while powering on) until the glitchy one was downloaded. So based on that assumption the common person can safely assume(hopefully but sometimes not) that it was the last app that caused the issue so replacing THAT app would only take seconds rather than on the iphone pay for it and it work. it may cost a whole minute if you get a droid app that doesnt work and you have to get a different version but that minute is still not that painful compared to even the cheapest .99$ apps from itunes. Another interesting little thing that i noticed for both phones that would make everyones life easier no matter what phone you have is this. If you have a phone that breaks down or gives you a problem and you get another phone and it gives you the same problem and another and another etc etc, its probably an app. Some apps auto save to sd card/itunes (sd card on droid, itunes when you backup your phone) so by re syncing or putting that sd card to your new phone you just put the problem back in your phone but you did reset the settings of that app back to its original settings like when you first downloaded it(app settings are stored in phone strictly). so if its a bad app its like a bomb thats going to go off you just reset its timer but it will eventually do what it did before. just delete your most recent apps that were downloaded before the issue happened. not necesarily related and not guaranteed to work or even apply to you(see above oppinion disclaimer please) but i see posts about that over and over on these forums.
