1) can I upgrade at an apple store rather than a verizon store?
2) do I need my mother to be with me when I upgrade my line? I'm on s secondary line and my line is eligible. Its currently a smartphone plan too.
3) I would like to activate the phone myself is it possible to tell apple when I'm upgrading at the apple store or verizon store this Sunday?
Thanks!

In my experience, that's not exactly true
2. "If your not an account manager then someone who is must be with you"
In my experience (and I have done this twice, both when getting the Eris and getting my iPhone), you can get the upgrade without the account manager available, as long as you are in touch with the account manager (by phone) and you have the last 4 digits of the account manager's SSN
I am a dependant on my mother's account (not an account manager myself), and I have gotten both my Eris and my iPhone without my mother present, they alway say that they are not supposed to, but they always do
3. " I think you have to do this anyway. you have to use your itunes"
I think by activate, the OP means to transfer the phone number and account to the new phone, not activating it for an iTunes account

The stores in my area ID everyone who tries to do anything with an account, and it must match the account owner or manager(s)

I have done it at two different stores, the Eris over at a "Wireless Zone" contracted Verizon store, and the iPhone at Best Buy, neither of them asked for ID, and all they asked for was the last 4 digits of my mother's SSN, I have never been to a Verizon location that checked ID
Transferring the phone number to the new phone is activating it, and it has to be done through iTunes.
I am pretty sure that is done through *228 option 1, NOT through iTunes
If the iPhone had to be activated through iTunes in order to activate the number/service (which I don't even see how that is possible), that would mean you would not get service of any kind until you activate it with iTunes
When I got my iPhone, the rep was able to get me ready and working (being able to make phone calls, text, use internet, download apps, etc.) before I even left Best Buy, and when I first got it, I didn't even have my laptop with me to sync it with iTunes when I got it, I was still able to use my phone with no problems, I made my first phone call on it at Best Buy before I even left, if iTunes is required to even make the iPhone work, how is that possible?
The only possible way was the rep would had to have synced it with a system at Best Buy before even giving me the iPhone, and I highly doubt he did that

A co-worker just did this, through the Apple store and she tells me it was overnight shipping.
BTW, the expression is "might as well" not "mines well".....

I'm sure you will do this anyway, but just remember to activate it within 30 days of purchase, otherwise you will be charged the full retail price of the iPhone.

I know to activate it when I get it because if I don't it means I didn't agree with the contract. But I probably will go Monday with my mother to the Apple store to get everything situated.
I've been waiting for this moment to happen. The iPhone on Verizon and it has happened. I'm not to concerned about the next iPhone. I just like the iPhone interface its user friendly.
But thanks everyone for th answers!

Will Verizon switch it to unlimited data for $30 or will it stay the same?

Thanks for the replies everyone but the last question. I have had the BlackBerry Storm2 for this whole contract and midway through the contract I ended up switching my data plan to 150MB.

It's possible that they will let you keep your current data plan but it would be best if you contact Verizon to find out for sure. You might find out that unless you have ample access to wifi on a regular basis that 150mb data plan may not be enough for you once you start using the iPhone. I find that I use far more than 150 mb per month and I have access to wifi more often than not. I don't stream movies or anything like that (I haven't yet at least) so it isn't hard to use 150 mb of 3G data at all.

i understand! Thanks. I plan on switching it to the $30 unlimited but I'm not sure how that will go down being as though I'm going to the Apple Store this Monday. Does Apple make the changes there or do I have to call when I get the iPhone. How is that suppose to go down?

I've never activated a phone at an Apple store but I'm sure they work the same way it would if you purchased a VZ phone from any other 3rd party retailer. They should be able to change your plan for you in store if necessary since they are able to give you a new phone fully activated when you walk out of the door. If unsure, make a call to Apple support or your nearest Apple store just to be sure.

He had to plug my iPhone in the laptop for activation though which was weird. But bought a bumper and a screen protector!
I love this phone. It's an huge improvement over the blackberry storm and I have been waiting for Apple to bring this phone to Verizon for since 2007 lol
Glad it's here!
Thanks Verizon and Apple! There is a God!
