i believe you'll be forced to drop it. it was a promotional thing. you'll have to choose from either the new share plans, or the individual data plan of 2 gigs for $30.

The double your data promotion was advertised as staying with you as long as you have a 4G phone, even when upgrading and after your contract ends.

Yep. I have a quote saved somewhere...will look for it in the morning when not on mobile.
Found it. I saw a few articles with this quote when the Double-the-Data promotion came out:
"Under the promotion, a new Verizon 4G subscriber would get 4 gigabytes for $30, 10 gigabytes for $50 and 20 gigabytes for $80. The plans are offered in the form of two-year contracts. For those who sign-up for 4G service under the promotion, the doubled data allotment will remain with them as long as they have a 4G smartphone through Verizon, even when it comes time to upgrade to a new 4G phone or after the two-year contract has expired, Muche said" (Ken Muche, Verizon spokesman).
So to me, the second sentence says that when you upgrade, you lose the double-data since it's offered "in the form of two-year contracts". However, that's contradicted by the last sentence, i.e., "…the doubled data allotment will remain with them as long as they have a 4G smartphone through Verizon, even when it comes time to upgrade to a new 4G phone or after the two-year contract has expired". That, to me, basically says 'forever'. I guess folks will find out for sure once they start upgrading.

no, you're right. the "plan" is just the calling plan. that's the 2 year part he refers to. data plans are basically add ons (like a text package) that you can add and drop if you go back and forth between a smartphone and basic phone.

Yep, data plans are "features". I've asked the question of at least two CS reps this year and both said that you'd keep the double-data upon upgrading, the catch is that you can't go backward, i.e., you have to keep a 4G phone. So if someone had to switch phones for some reason and activated a 3G phone, I would assume they'd have to choose another data plan from whatever was available at the time.

When I upgraded my smartphone in July I had to drop my $15 150 MB promotional plan.

It may be that the terms of the two promotions were different.

I don't mean to sound tacky, but you may want to research the phone you are considering buying. Yes, the iPhone 5 is 4G, so based on my earlier post, I would assume that you'd keep your double-data when upgrading. If you find out differently, please post back and let us know.

If you are upgrading and get the phone at the cheaper subsidized price you will likely be forced to choose the Share Everything plan. I say likely because that is the case with anyone that has the unlimited data plans. This may be different if your promotion stated that your plan will be maintained as long as you remain a 4G device user...you can contact VZW and find out for sure. Otherwise, if you want to keep your data plan you would have to pay full retail (if it works the same as they are doing the unlimited data plan people). Initially, those that added the unlimited plan before it was discontinued did so with the assumption that they would always be grandfathered in. This ended up not being the case when VZW announced the new Share Everything plans and what happens to those that have unlimited data when they choose to upgrade.
