Google Maps data usage

My wife and I have a shared data plan. We noticed recently we seem to be using more data. I looked at her iPhone XR and see that from Nov 4 through today (Nov 19), Google Maps has used 788mb of data. She's only using it on her 15 mile, 45 minute commute (so a total of 30 miles and 90 mins a day.) While I have a shorter commute, I've used 103mb in the same time period. She doesn't have background app update or any other services tied to Google Maps running. Anyone have an idea on what could cause this?

There are definitely some options to avoid using so much data on the app. First, you can try to use Low Data Mode on your iPhone. Thank you for this tip. I'm going to update the phone right now and attempt to adjust this setting. As a note, I'm checking on the data usage from when I posted the other day. It was at 788mb on Monday or Tuesday, and only being a couple of days later, the Google Maps data usage this evening is 1.1GB. I will follow up once I have some more information.

Does she have plain maps up, or using the satellite view mode. The latter uses much more data

It's the default view, not satellite.
