Stolen iPhone Package, how to report ESN?

Hey everyone,

Long story short, my iPhone was stolen from my apartment "porch" in the hallway after placing multiple notes for UPS to leave it at the Resident Services office and I want to disable the ESN number so the person who took it can't use it. I cant seem to find it anywhere under My Verizon. Am I looking in the wrong spot? Can I even disable it since I don't even know what the ESN number is or does Verizon have it on record which ESN# the phone was they shipped me. I pre-ordered with Verizonwirelss.com FYI. Thanks for any help

Call Verizon they have the esn they can shut if off.

Verizon would have the serial number of the device shipped...as far as your device being left on the porch...if you left a note stating that you wanted it left without your needing to be there to sign for it (I know it wasn't left where you wanted it to be) then unfortunately even with you reporting the phone to Verizon you might end up being responsible for it and losing the money (and upgrade if you didn't pay full retail) you paid for it. Hopefully that's not the case.

I just got back from the VZW store and they said it can only be activated under my phone number. After it's activated on mine, it can then be transferred to another number. He also said nobody has tried to activate it yet which is a good sign. UPS may have delivered it to the wrong address and lost the package. The VZW guy also advised me to call Customer Service to tell them what happened and I could probably buy another iPhone at the discounted 2 year price.

Isent it a requirement to sign no matter what i have left note and they said yhey would come back up to 3 times. Did u track it to see if it was left. I would tell Cservice u never received it and freeze the line.

I would put the lost insurance on and u pay deductible cheaper then full retail and 2yr price.

The package would have had a signature required authorization. I'd just run the tracking # on UPS/FedEX's site and see if it says "delivered" and if so then call the carrier (UPS/FedEx) and tell them that they left a package without obtaining a signature as required. It'd be well documented because if you sign for it, the signature is saved in their system. They'd easily be able to see that no signature was obtained. Sounds like the delivery driver's fault.

If the OP left notes stating that they wanted the package delivered without them having to be there (which they seem to indicate is what happened, although it was not left at the office where they asked) and the driver perceived the location to be safe then the package can be left (UNLESS there were strict instructions from the shipper that stated the package could not be delivered without someone being there in person to sign for it). It's why in some instances you are able to print out a form from the shipper website that you sign and leave stating that you accept the risks of having the package delivered without you being there. Some have stated that they were able to have their iPhones delivered in that manner. It's risky (as the OP's situation clearly shows), but assuming that is what happened and was allowed in this case it was a risk that the OP was willing to take. Now if the driver left it without any instruction to do so from the OP and they were required to obtain a physical signature then yes, the driver would be at fault for poor judgement. Ultimately, I think it's a bad idea to have any package of value left anywhere when the risk is that high, but that's just my personal opionion. I personally would try to see if I could pick it up at the shipping center after the initial delivery attempt was done (which I have done many times). Hopefully the OP gets lucky and the package come up or VZW allows them to purchase again at the discounted price as the OP stated they were told might be the case. Otherwise...it might end up being an expensive situation if the responsibility is placed on the OP and not the driver.

U know it might have been sent back to the warehouse by chance. Atleast it wouldn't be stolen.if it stolen and bought insurance the person wouldn't be paying as much as it could be that's why I do that. I would track it if lost either have them investigate where it is or issue a claim under lost insurance.

Hey everyone, thanks for all the replies and suggestions. I clearly left a sticky note over my apartment number outside the door (so the driver would need to read the note to see what apartment number he was standing in front of) and the actual address of the package stated "Please leave at Apartment Manager's office" and then my actual address ensuring the delivery person would have to read that to find out the address of the package.

I talked to Verizon and they said the best they could maybe do is give me $200 off full retail ($549 for 32 gb) or suggest I can add a line for $10 a month for 2 years to get another upgrade price purchase. I do not want to do either of these. I am going to the UPS shipment center tomorrow in San Jose and see if any progress can be made. I also filed a lost package claim on Saturday and no progress has been made on that.

I will update you guys with what happens tomorrow at UPS. Thanks for all the suggestions.

How much is the deductible for lost iPhone. For $9.99 u can file a claim with asurian. It could be less then $200 deductible. Cheaper then paying full retail - $200. Maybe I'm wrong u have within 30 days u can add it. I assume u tracked it to see if it went where ur telling us.

The deductible depends on the model they ordered. They don't have the option to add insurance when it's already on record that phone is already missing. You can't legitimately add insurance to an already lost/stolen/damaged device...it would and should be considered fraud. This is probably another reason why you are required to purchase an insurance plan by a certain timeframe...because of too many people pulling stunts like that to save a buck.

As far as the offer that the OP was given ($200 off of full retail)...although it isn't the most idea thing to have to do I'm actually surprised they would even offer than considering the situation that occurred was in no way the fault of VZW. Hopefully you will get some resolution via the delivery company, but to be honest I wouldn't expect too much out of that if things show that the package was delivered to your door without your signature at your request (again, I know you asked that it be delivered to an office instead, but I don't think they are required to attempt delivery to a different location other than perhaps your immediate neighbor) and was stolen before you could arrive home to get it. The best option for me now is to use my mom's upgrade to buy another phone at the discounted price. Not the ideal solution, but probably the one I will end up going with. Thanks for all the help and suggestions guys. Lesson learned!

Did UPS give you a timeframe to expect a response? As far as using your mom's upgrade...that may be the cheapest option for you assuming she won't need a new phone anytime in the next 20 months...if she does then she will have to pay full retail. Assuming nothing comes from the UPS situation another option (although again, not the most idea) is to add a line to your account and get the phone at discount that way. Then you can put a "dumb" phone on the new account to get the lowest possible monthly family share rate (assuming you aren't already on a family share plan. If you are then you can still add a line if you haven't reached the limit and put a dumb phone on that new line...then you would only be adding $9.99 a month to the plan for that new line). That would avoid using your mom's upgrade if there is any concern she may need it before the next eligible upgrade date comes.
