iPhone drops calls when using wifi calling

Hello all,

I have weak cell signal in my office in the basement so I am using Verizon WIFI calling feature. I have been getting random call drops. Has anything like this happened to anyone here? My WIFI connection is strong and it is up when the calls drop. Any ideas?

VLASHA68, Alternate calling options are important. Turning the feature off/on is a step in the right direction. We recommend turning the feature off and unplugging your router/modem for about three minutes. Plug the router/modem back in and reconnect.

IS cellular off? If the phone is getting some cell signal, and trying to connect, it may not be handing off properly.

Cellular is on. Should I disable it completely when using WIFI calling?Did

not see that as a requirement for WIFI calling...

IT isn't required, but since you do have some signal, your phone may be trying to handoff to cellular, which it does very poorly from what I've heard.

OThers report turning off just LTE works.

Try both and if you still have problems bother the guys in tech support to look over the phone.

VLASHA68, we want you to be able to maintain the phone call especially when you are using WiFi Calling. Let's ensure that you are able to stay connected. Do you have WiFi Assist turned on? If so, please turn off WiFi Assist. Settings>Phone>WiFi Assist. Are you seeing WiFi Calling in the top left corner?

It's got to be a pain to disable LTE wireless every time I need to make

calls on WIFI and teen able when on the street.

Was there any resolution to this issue? I'm having the same issue (bad cell reception at home, strong wifi signal in home office and calls that I dial often fail when on Wifi calling). I had an iPhone 6 and now I have an iPhone 7 and it's the same issue.

I have iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 7, iPhone 6S in the household and all use wifi calling on regular basis without any problems. It hands off to the cell system when we are leaving the house and get out of range of wifi.

The point of the post is it may not be a Verizon system issue and you should also look at your local setup. It is more than just a strong wifi signal. Voice over IP is very sensitive to other network components over wifi signal strength - overall network speed (rarely a problem since requirement is quite low for VoIP), ping, and judder. Have you run your network connection through a VoIP test (not just a speed test)? Does it work on other wifi connections? If you force wifi only so you are on wifi calling only does it still not work or drop?

If you're in an area that has both a Wi-Fi network and a weak cellular signal, sometimes your Wi-Fi calls will fail. Looks like it’s a result of the phone trying to connect to the cellular network instead of sticking with Wi-Fi.

A solution that has worked for me is to disable the cellular option. I hadn’t seen how to turn off cellular calling, finally stumbled on the answer. It’s a bit clunky but has worked out pretty well so far. Using the iPhone Control Center (accessed by swiping up from the bottom of screen OR Settings > Control Center):

Turn on Airplane Mode. Cellular and Wi-Fi will both be turned off. Turn Wi-Fi back on. Cellular is now Off, Wi-Fi (including Wi-fi calling) is on.

Hello. We have been having the same problem for the last few months. iPhone X and 6S at home. The both started dropping calls at home. We use Wifi calling because we have poor service at home. When the phone receives a bar of service, it tries to switch to the cellular network but the signal is too poor and we lose call quality or the call drops. Have discussed with Verizon and Apple, both act like they've never hear of this problem and generically suggest to do a factory reset. This has not helped. Of note, our 6S can be placed in airplane mode and have wifi calling work quite well. The X will not use Wifi calling in airplane mode. Please release a patch that ensures the phone does not switch off wifi calling unless it receives consistency reliable cell signal.

As previously written, you can get a reliable connection for Wifi calling if your turn airplane mode on, then turn Wifi back on.

You have to have Wifi back on to connect to Wifi calling.

Some state turning ‘Wifi assist’ or LTE off made a difference.

My iPhone X will not use Wifi calling while in airplane mode. I have turned

WiFi back on, and am connected. The “phone menu” is grayed out under

settings, and attempting to make a call gives an error stating that the

device is in airplane mode.
