iPhone in Europe for 1 year

I am a long time Verizon customer and I have moved to Europe for a year. I tried to figure out a way to keep my service while away, but that  is not an option. Thus, I am planning to switch out my Verizon sim card  with a local sim card to use my phone in Europe for the year.  My main concern is that when I come back to Verizon at the end of the year, I will have lost my American phone number. If I cancel my Verizon service  for the year but come back, will I be able to get my number back?

dansk80, we're sorry to hear that you plan on leaving the Verizon family. Once a phone number is cancelled, there's a chance that it'll be recycled and given to another user. What you can do instead is activate a Verizon Prepaid SIM on your phone and keep that service active for a lower price than your postpaid service. You can find our prepaid services here:

If you cancel service, your phone number will be gone and recycled.  Jesse's answer above sounds like a good workaround, but that means you'll have to pay for service you can't use since Verizon's network is only in the US.  Maybe go for the Talk and Text only prepaid plan?  Otherwise, enjoy your stay overseas!
