My wife and I moved phone providers from verizon to another company. We finally got our last bill months later. Apparently Verizon had an old address on file. When we attempted to pay the bill we were informed the associate couldn't find the account and it most likely went to collections. I need to know how I can pay that outstanding balance since it's now going to affect our credit.

This is something that happens quite often with verizon.
i would check your credit reports quickly and you should be able to see the agency involved. If it is listed the damage has already been done to your credit.
verizon has a billing department and a internal collection department simply call the verizon number and ask to be connected.
clear it up as soon as possible
