My wife’s iPhone incurred significant international minutes and message charges from Verizon during our recent trip to Europe even though Cellular Data and Data Roaming were turned off on her phone during the entirety of the trip. She did not initiate any phone calls or text messages, except when we had wi-fi (her phone had wi-fi calling turned on). When I called Verizon to contest the charges I was told that Airplane Mode needed to be turned on as well. I did not know this and I cannot find this information posted on the Verizon web site. It feels as though we were tricked into the charges.
I spent an hour on the phone contesting the charges with little success. This experience has left me angry and frustrated. I am going to write the BBB and Consumer Reports.
The Verizon website should spell out explicitly the exact settings needed to avoid charges during travel, both for iOS and Android phones.

I would like to reiterate that the Verizon website should spell out explicitly the exact settings needed to avoid charges during travel, both for iOS and Android phones.
