Ruined credit score

I opened a Verizon account at, with two phones, which were supposed to be on the same plan. For whatever reason, the phones were unable to be activated, and neither phone was able to make or receive calls or texts from either phone. I went to the Verizon store and decided to stay on my current family plan. I was reassured by the Verizon store that the account I had just opened would be closed. However, the account was not closed and I received a bill for the supposedly closed account, which I was never able to use. I spoke with customer service a few times, who reassured me the balance would be taken care of and was an error on their end. However, more bills for the same amount arrived and, I thought it was the end of it when I stopped receiving bills. However, despite speaking with customer service several times and receiving no more bills, I was apparently sent to collections, which tanked my credit score by more than 100 points, for a bill that I thought was resolved (I currently pay my portion to the main account holder each month). I am beyond frustrated at this point.
