I am new to Verizon & not happy already!! I elected a home line with Verizon @ $20 month. The tax on this is $10.62 = $30.62 for the service. The tax/surcharge is > 50% of the fee. Had I known this, I would NEVER HAD ELECTED THIS. This seems unfair.
I already paid $99 for the box up front, so I am stuck. Pretty sure they won't refund me for the box.

Verizon has a policy of listing taxes and fees as separate charges on the bills. Not all of that $10.62 is for taxes; there are separate fees for 911 service charge, and city infrastructure fees. $30 or so per month for a landline is actually quite reasonable. Yours sounds like a VoIP service run through Fios. My dad has a true old-school copper landline with the Blue Logo Place and it costs over $70/month.
