Porting A Number

I currently have Fios Telephone and Internet. I have decided to cancel the Telephone Service and will port my existing phone number to Vonage (VOIP.) I have my Vonage coneection up and running using one isolated phone set. Porting of my phone number to Vonage from Verizon is scheduled to occur in three days.

At that time I wish to connect all of my home's internal copperphone wiring to the Vonage adapter and disconnect it from the Fios system. (Actually, in reverse order.) In the classic case I would disconnect those wires from the Fios box, however I would prefer to leave that connection intact for ease of restoring the Fios phone in the future if desired.

My question is this.

When Verizon ports the phone number to Vonage does that leave my internal copper wiring interface to the Fios equipment electically isolated from the Fios side?

Shoudl be easy as long as Verizon left your Network Interface Device (NID) intact outside your house when they installed FIOS.

When you Diconnect the Phone Cable from the ONT and your NID your Houses Internal Copper Wiring should be isiolated from FIOS.

I used to have Vonage before switching to Verizon and there is a Vonage Forum that will tell you how to hard wire your Vonage Adapter into your house wiring:

The most important part would be to disconnect the Verizon Cables from your NID and mark them so that they do not accidenty get reconnected.

Thanks for your reply. My home was built in 1974 and there is no NID. Inside my basement is a terminal block that is a real rat's nest of phone wires. I can disconnect Verizon's copper wires between that block and Verizon's ONT. However, I wish to leave them connected so that the next guy can opt for Fios without need to go back to that block and re-connect those wires.

I need no help with the Vonage - it took five minutes to get it up and running. To connect the Vonage adapter to my copper wire, all I have to do is plug a phone cord into the adapter and the other end of that cord into any existing phone jack in my home.

Again, my question is:

When Verizon ports the phone number to Vonage does that leave my internal copper wiring interface to the Fios equipment electrically isolated from the Fios side?

When Verizon Ports your Number to Vonage you will still have a Physical Connection to your wiring block.

Since you do not have a NID you will need to unplug the phone connection from the ONT and mark it as do not reconnect. This should break the physical conenction and allow Vonage to work with your existing house wiring.

Again, I'm trying to find out out if upon porting that the copper wires are electrically isolated from the ONT. (I understand the physical connection exists and it is my desire to leave that intact.)

I'll likely give Fios Tech support a call if no one knows.
