Why can't I just report an outage?

A utility pole was struck by lightning, knocking out both power and phone. The electricity is back on, but the phone is still out. Why isn't there any easy way to notify Verizon of this and to check on any progress in its restoration?

Try calling tech support. They can run tests from their end.
