Collections on my credit report

When my son turned 18 years old, his phone was placed in a sub account under my name. He is now 26 and went with a different carrier other than Verizon. His bill of $988 was supposed to be paid by the other carrier and wasn’t. He received all the calls and notifications.
I received nothing! I found out about the delinquent debt in a phone call from a 3rd party in August. I paid it immediately! As of 10/16/24, my credit report is showing a $988 Verizon Wireless debt that “needs attention”. I called Verizon and was transferred 4 times to several different departments and none knew how to resolve this. The last guy literally hung up on me! I have been a customer for over 12 years! I am about to leave! They need to correct this as my credit score dropped 40 points!

Peter,
I appreciate you responding back to my post! I called customer service on 10/17/24 and was transferred multiple times to different departments. No one was able to help me. It doesn’t seem as the customer service employees understand what to do with a credit reporting dispute.
I noticed this week the dollar amount was updated to $0.00 and reported to the credit bureaus correctly. I appreciate Verizon for resolving this issue in a timely manner.
My only complaint left is that the debt was reported on my credit report at all. I believe there is a gap in the process. I was not advised that my son did not have his own account for the last 8 years. He paid that account for years on his own; recently he switched carriers and the new carrier was supposed to pay the remaining balance but failed. His phone monthly charges and bills went to his address and Verizon called him historically. Verizon never contacted me for that account dealings. He was a sub-account under my main account and nothing showed me that. It wasn’t listed online or on my statements. Verizon should contact the main account holder before anything is reported on a credit report.. My credit report still reflects a derogatory Verizon Wireless trade line even though the balance states it is $0.00. I paid the debt immediately after I became aware via a third party collections company. That was to avoid it reporting negatively.
I hope by bringing this error to Verizon’s attention it will bring awareness to the error and the gap in the process. Hopefully, my credit report can be corrected and have the debt removed altogether.

I am very upset!!! I have a very similar issue to those documented above. I set my son up with his on phone almost 20 years ago, apparently on a sub-account under my primary account number. Over 10 years ago he was taken off of my account and all of his billing etc. begun being sent directly to him. I terminated my service with Verizon in January of 2024 and am in possession of an email from Verizon dated 2/14/2024 stating that "We see that all lines on your account are disconnected and future bills will be mailed to your billing address. To this date I have received not further billing or other correspondence from Verizon. A reasonable person would assume that my ties with Verizon were now complete. Fast forward to this past weekend . I am ready to purchase a new home and as such was unlocking my credit reports so the mortgage company could work on my pre-approval. I was shocked to see that my credit scores which have been in the 840-850 range for years were in the 600 to low 700 range. After doing a bit of research I found that I had been dinged for an unpaid balance of just over $1,600. After a few calls to Verizon and transferred to multiple departments I finally figured out that I was related to my son's phone number and that I was somehow still responsible for this amount as he was originally set up as a sub-account under my primary account. I received no communication from Verizon or their collection agency that this balance was due. How can you ruin my credit with absolutely zero notification? I have attempted to resolve this with both calls to Verizon customer service and the collection agency. Each party says that they cannot help me and refer me back to the other party. I am more than willing to work with you to get this resolved if you can get me in touch with someone who has the authority to immediately restore my credit to where it was before this incident occurred.
