Found this on hd.Engadget.com Now I wish I had kept FiOS.

I got new 7232 when I installed FIOS October 16, in Massachusetts. It's really big storage 500G!!!

Don't everyone get hopes up - its only on test in certain markets.
Here in NoVA I'm told not to expect it to be available until next year 😞
It is not a test, it is currently for new installs.

Must be full of bugs and new customers will not know any better!
I'm told by a senior tech that they're out in Maryland on a permanent basis. I'm going to try to snag one. I'll post when I know more.

I switched to FIOS in September and received a 7216 DVR, which never worked right - turned off and then back on spontaneously and lost it's connection to my other set top box and internet. After a series of service calls I was sent a replacement - a beat up 64xx model. I was furious - when I returned my 5 year old DVRs to Cablevision they were immaculate. It was the last day of my 30 day trial and when tech support person investigated and said there was nothing he could do I asked to be transferred to the cancellation department. In about 10 minutes the person I dealt with there had a technician scheduled for that afternoon and I received a 7232. It works perfectly, and now I definitely don't miss my 2 cablevision DVRs. It's bigger than the 2 of them put together and less expensive.
I gave it a shot as well. The Verizon rep was not able to order a specific model but put a note on my order as to which DVR I was requesting. I will post back once I receive the new DVR.
So, has anyone received a 7232 via mail/UPS? If so, you're the first I've heard.
Please let us know.
Kind of an old topic, but according to the techs that have been to my house, the new boxes are Cisco. They are 500g but that is about where the good stuff ends. They are a POS. Remote DVR does NOT work, widgets are crippled and you cannot add or remove (I'm not buying them), can't record shows that are already started, esata doesn't work, and it incredibly fickle about media manager. Not to mention, nobody at verizon knows how to use these things. I witnessed a conference call between my technician, his foreman and something called a Cisco "bridge" and these guys are **bleep**. They were pretty much implying I'm nuts telling that this stuff doesn't work, the tech and the foreman had NO idea what I Was talking about only, to hear the Cisco reps say "yeah, thats bugged.... yeah thats bugged.... yeah thats bugged too....." . So don't be in a hurry. There is nothing special about these boxes. Right now I'm stuck with these gimped **bleep** crippled DVR boxes when I Would happily trade for the smaller older working model.
Sorry to hear your experience. You should know that in certain markets Motorola manufactures the 7232. In fact, that's the one I have. Further, remote dvr and the widgets all work fine. The eSATA port will function with the update to firmware 1.9.
As to tech support, well, I've had my own challenges with them. That said, in my area, in general, the techs that come out are pretty good.
Bottom line is that my experience is nothing like yours. I love my 7232 and in no way could I be described as a Vz fanboy.
My MIL just moved in down the street and they installed today and she got the new 7232. She doesn't care about it though and said we could swap. Will I be able to swap DVR's with her? Wondering if the other STB will work or were those upgraded too?
Just had 3 7232's installed and mine are all Motorola. They seem to work fine...
Thanks for the info. Her STB are very different than mine too. I wonder if I can keep my STB or have to swap that with her too? I'm also curious about just ordering an extra DVR for a month or two and then sending one back...wonder which one I would get since they are rolling out the news ones here. I'm so ready to be done with this low space issue.....
No, it does not have any bugs - mine DVR at least. Have ir for more then 8 weeks - so far so good. No malfunction whatsoever works good , big storage. It maybe still limited to new customers only - I don't know.
re: mail delivery of a 7232, no luck.
I have a 7216, tech shipped me a replacement that turned out to be a downgrade - 6416. To her credit, she said the warehouse doesn't know the SKUs, they just pick up the next HD DVR off the shelf and drop ship it.
I had a new DVR mailed to me in Texas in the hopes of scoring a 7232 and I got the same old DVR I had. I turned the box right around back to them. I agree it is ridiculous that us long standing good paying customers can't get the upgrades but the new customers can. What a hassle to have to cancel your account just to sign up again so you can be a "new customer". I'll do just that if I have to. I'm on month to month and just married so my new husband can take on the account and a new install if I can't get the box.
I posted on their Facebook about whether I could just swap the DVR with my MIL and the tech there said no, that the box was programmed to her account or some crap like that and I wouldn't be able to get it verified and activated on my system. That seems wrong.
I'm still wondering about just ordering a 2nd DVR on my account and what I would get.
I still think this is unacceptable that we can't just call in and ask to be swapped out. Bad business Verizon! I pay over $5K a year to be treated like this??
People, it's very simple - the only way for an existing customer to get a 7232 without the hassle of canceling their account and re-establishing is to call tech support, tell them you have (made-up) pixelation or other problem, then get a tech out. If, and I stress if, they have a 7232 on the truck, I've not heard of a single case where the tech refused to swap-out an existing STB for a 7232. It's that simple, period.
Should it be this way, heck no. But while many of you may not have the stomach for it, the choice is clear, follow the tried and true advice above, or wait until Vz deems you worthy.

The only problem with that is that they may charge you for a bogus visit. Oh if you get a nice tech, he will happily swap it for you, but if they start getting too many of these, then they will start charging for wasting their time when they could be helping someone that has a real problem. That is what happend two years ago when they had the HD box shortage. And $100 per visit is a little steep.
Plus canceling your acct and re-ordering will not guarentee you of getting the new DVR. Only SOME new customers are getting the bigger box. Not all. The 7232's are in short supply right now.
No, the only way to get one for sure is to go to the web site and sign up on the waiting list.

"The only problem with that is that they may charge you for a bogus visit."
Highly unlikely. Can you cite one instance where this has happened, other than your vague example of several years ago? Of course you can't because I seriously doubt it has. As I've said before, the techs are good and they really want to make customers happy. It's their butt if they don't. Why would a tech take a risk like refusing you a piece of hardware they can give you without risk to them and then charging you a service fee? That's a rhetorical question. The answer is, they certainly won't if you do it right. It's worked for many on this board without a single exception I have found.
When I said the only way to get a 7232, I meant without waiting. I'm not going to address the cancellation issue as I wouldn't advise doing that.
Wait if you want. That's exactly what Vz wants you to do. "We'll abuse you and favor new customers, but you wait like a good little customer now." I can just hear what PT Barnum would say.
I finally reveived a new HD DVR after a little over a month....the bad news is that it is not the 7232 but another 6416. Guess I will just wait until they are readily available......
the official way to get one is www.verizon.com/fiostvcentral -> My TV -> Set Top Box -> bottom right banner ad about ur DVR > Click and fill in the info to be placed on the waiting list.
You won't be garunteed a 7232 but you'll be on a waiting list to get a DVR that can do the enhanced expansion to a external ESATA hard drive when the software gets enabled in the next software release.
there is NO way you will get one mailed to you unfortunately, no matter what you hear from a verizon rep.

Of course I cant. Because it hasnt happened since then. But go back and look, there were many cases of people being charged for bogus visits. There were many complaints about this. But this is the first time since then that there has been a shortage of boxes since. Yes they want to make customers happy, but at the same time, they want to stay profitable. But dont belive me and give it a try. I couldnt care less if you get billed for it or not. I was just giving a warning about what happend in the past. And remember the addage, "Those who fail to learn from the past are doomed to repeat it"
they are not for new customers only despite what they told you, but they are in limited supply, not avail in all areas, and are only available through a truck roll and a tech drop off ---- no way to get one mailed to you yet.. some people will want it bad enough to pay the 79.99 truck roll fee, or some people are patient enough to go on the waiting list since there aren't that many out there compared to the other boxes.

Amen Hubrisnxs. Oh ... and just a point of correction to previous poster's commentary, there is nothing broken about a refurbished box (that's why it's refurbished0 and the image quality across all HD boxes is exactly the same. Now ... as for higher capacity and a faster processor, well no argument there.
Thank you for the replys.
I am happy to hear from an expert that the video quality is the same with the new and the old generation of Motorola boxes, I was going by hearsay from another technical forum that the newer boxes were less prone to "macroblocking" type distortion that shows up a lot on fast motion HD content. As far as "refurbished" items, I would much rather have a new item rather than a previously broken one when I am paying premium rates and I am pretty confident that I am not the only one that would feel this way.
Some of the Verizon FiOS Stores will be carrying the New 7232 HD-DVR 500Gig (Limited Quantities) Unit but I was informed that there will be an upgrade fee of $40.00. But for those interested you can always call to confirm and order at their location.
Verizon Stores
I will have to check at my local Verizon store to see if I can pay the $40 for a trade-in/upgrade.
Seems like it would be worth it.
All this talk about the fancy new 500Gig STBs is pretty useless considering the following software / firmware limitation:
I have a 7232 and the box STILL CANNOT PAUSE Live TV for more than 10 minutes. You would think they have dealt with this garbage, non-sensical time-limitation by now, but of course this is Verizon we are talking about here? So nothing about this new box as a DVR really interests me until they do something about it. I have firmware 1.8 and I can just about guarantee that version 1.9 won't offer Jack about this 10 minute Pause problem either. So it's back to good-ol' TiVO... ... again.
Yep, I will wait until all the bugs are ironed out with the new DVR's. I would like a new DVR, but I will be fine with waiting on the list for the new model. I have no problems with my DVR now so I would like to keep it that way. I would like more drive space and more than that I would like to be able to hook my external hard drive up to the dvr. But not with my model otherwise I would keep it forever.
Does anybody know is it possible to get 12 month free DVR from Verizon FIOS for existing customers who signed before for FIOS and got only 6 months free DVR offer? I signed in October and still has cuople months left with my 6 months free DVR promotion when I signed up, but now Verizon is giving 12 Months free - $120 savings... Is it worth to ask Verizon customer service of 6 months more of free DVR service?
Thanks...
Just a follow up to your post. Why do you want to pause a program for more than 10 minutes? There are times when I do pause a show, but if it runs into 15 or 20 minutes I simply record the program. I truly am not comprehending the problem. You are the first person to mention this problem. Installers often have to suggest upgrades and features for new model settop boxes

Dear Alden,
Verizon will not change promotions after you have signed up for their service. The good news is that if you call and explain that there must be something that can be done......they almost always give you some type of compensation. Extended DVR service....hbo free.......reduced rate for a year. Any deal you get is better than doing nothing. Good Luck.
Will the new QIP7232 HD DVR work with the QIP6200 STBs, and would I still be able to view recorded programs on those STBs?
yes sir
Just got my upgrade to this. Overall I'm very impressed. In almost every area the responsiveness seems to have been improved and, maybe just luck, but the 500 GB HD is a LOT quieter (the previous DVR's 160 GB drive I could hear a tick, tick, tick across the room constantly, the new one I actually have to go over to it and put my ear right up to it to hear any sound at all).
There are a few questions/comments I have though and I'm hoping someone here can tell me if the behavior is normal or not.
First: (and this could be a bug in the 1.8 IMG -- 1.9 has sadly not made it to where i am in MA yet). I decided to set the TV picture to background when bringing up the guide, menus, etc. in a transparent state. As I was selecting a series I wanted to record with options, all of the option popup menu backgrounds did not display (just the text). Which made it rather difficult to read. If I set the TV picture option back to the small foreground view in menus, then the record series with options menu appears correctly with the usual background. Known bug? Fixed in 1.9? (I didn't have the background option set on the previous DVR so I'm not sure if this is an issue particular to just the new DVR or if it existed in the prior one as well).
Second: Of all the places where this box seems faster than the previous one (responsiveness of skip forward/back, pause, navigating the IMG or other menus, etc.), when switching from SD to HD or HD to SD channels there seems to be around a 5 sec lag. In most cases the screen of my HDTV turns green briefly and even complains with a dialog that there is "No video signal". I don't recall such a big lag or ever seeing green or that dialog with the previous box. Is this normal/expected? This also seems to affect things when playing back from the DVR. For example, I had on a HD station, brought up the DVR recordings and selected one that was in SD. Got the lag before it started playing. When done and returning to the recordings menu I *briefly* saw the menu... but then it vanished, I got the lag again with the green screen and the dialog and then finally the menu reappeared with the HD content displaying in the small foreground window. It seems like it is actually shutting off the HDMI connection when going from HD to SD and then turning it back on.
Third: More of an observation: the light to show that a remote control command has been received is the power button light? It isn't a problem as such, just odd seeing the power button go *off* briefly every time I press a button on the remote as it receives the signal. I'm sure I'll get used to that eventually.
That's about it for the box itself. The old box is still showing up online and on the iOS apps for remote DVR and remote control but I've been told that will be resolved once Verizon receives the old DVR back and removes that data from their end.
Yenco,
1) I cannot reproduce your problem on my 7232. When I set it to transparent and click to record a series, the pop-up is displayed on top of the Guide itself and was completely readable, the background was there. No idea why there would be a difference.
2) My guess is that you currently have the SD Override setting set to something other than Off, and you previously did have it set to Off. This is a common effect when using HDMI because the TV and STB have to renegotiate the connection every time the resolution is changed. If you set SD Override to Off then all signals from the STB will be sent to the TV in whatever HD resolution you have chosen. The SD picture will typically be slightly worse, but you won't see the delay, and for me, I don't watch much SD anymore anyway. I personally cannot stand the delay, I have been using Off for years.
3) Yep, that is the way it works, and yep, it is odd. I am guessing that it is a cost issue, cheaper to have one led than two in the box. Does take some getting used to, but I have had mine long enough now that I pretty much no longer really notice it.
When I returned my old DVR via UPS it did take a week or so to drop off my account. When I returned some SD boxes they came off much more quickly. No idea why. But if it doesn't disappear in a couple of weeks I would contact Veizon (and I hope you kept the shipment receipt out of paranoia I also scanned and saved all of the return paperwork including the UPS receipt, plus I checked the UPS site regularly for progress and captured the screen images as it box wound its way to Verizon) .

1. Weird. It isn't doing it here now either. Perhaps just a one-off glitch or something. I was doing a LOT to set things up again... adding back favorites, changing various settings, trying to get the DVR working with the Verizon site and the iOS DVR and remote apps, turning on the caller ID display, setting up everything I could (some of the series are not currently being broadcast within the IMG date range so can't be added) back into the DVR recording schedule, etc. So maybe it was just some obscure combination that led to it. Probably nothing to worry about, but if I ever see it again I'll try to note everything I was doing prior to that.
2. Thanks Justin. You are absolutely right, I just missed that setting. It was on 480i. I set it to off and all is well (and in fact, that seems much faster than the old DVR as well now 🙂 And like you, I try to avoid SD as much as possible... sadly there are still some stations I like that are not available in HD on Verizon (but are available in HD)... I've made the requests in the ideas forum and see in various responses (since they are frequently requested) that they are all in the queue to be added [eventually *sigh*].
I saved a copy of everything related to the shipping of the old DVR, including a copy of the return label with the tracking number. I only got the new box hooked up yesterday and the old one packaged up and dropped off today so it isn't in the UPS online tracking system quite yet, but should be before the end of today and then I can follow it on its way back to Verizon.
-Mike
Oh, btw... my compliments to the iOS app developers too. The FiOS Remote App has a "My Favorites" section that is cached locally on the iPod. While there was no way to tell the new box to just use those favorites... I at least had a reference list right there so didn't have to start entirely from scratch when setting up the new favorite lists on the new box.
I just got a QIP7232 2 after months of waiting. Installation was simple and the box seems to work OK. A question. Anyone know if the USB port in the front is usable? What can you plug in there? - a hardrive?,, a flashdrive?
None of Verizon's boxes currently support the USB ports. All they currently do is provide charger power for a USB device.
Who knows, if all the planets align one day they may actually put them to use
Anyone in the Washington, DC/Northern VA area have the new QIP 7232 DVR and if so did you go out and purchase the eSATA My DVR 1TB Expansion from MicroCenter?
@nycplayboy78 wrote: Anyone in the Washington, DC/Northern VA area have the new QIP 7232 DVR and if so did you go out and purchase the eSATA My DVR 1TB Expansion from MicroCenter?
The eSATA features are not enabled on the DVR. This is a feature that will be enabled when the boxes are updated to the next img version 1.9. The existing software does not yet support the external storage. Some limited areas did receive img 1.9, but the distribution was stopped due to issues that were found. The upgrades should continue at some point in the near future.

The USB ports only supply power, and will not be used for anything else. Charge your phone perhaps.
The img 1.9 will use eSATA for storage expansion, and not USB.
hey i got the same box and im trying to connect my mytouch 4g with the fios mobile remote widget or app but it seems like i am so dumb that the numbers of my phone is not matching with the number i entered, i can't believe this cause is my own cellphone number and on my tv scr

Has anybody been successfully able to order this box recently? Got the upgrade email, order 2 units and *poof* nothing..it's coming up on 4 weeks...no-body at Verizon can give me any status, tracking number or anything..I keep being switched around to different departments, they keep saying they can't do anything because it's online order only. Any ideas on how I can track this down?
As luck should have it, the 2 new DVR's showed up yesterday via UPS... now, I just have to wait for the 1.9aIMG rollout right to be able to use my external storage?
