7-11 Slow Download Speeds

Very frustrating. Every night between 7-11 my download speeds on my 75/75 plan slow to a crawl. After several calls to Verizon tech, still the same problem. We have determined that there are no issues on my end, so I can only assume its on Verizons. The interesting thing is that my upload speed remain perfect during the evening hours.

Hello, We noticed that you posted the same question on DSL reports and have replied to you there as well. We would love to help and resolve this issue for you. I understand that it happens between those hours and it can be difficult to isolate that type of issue. When it does slow down, have you ran a speed test or a trace route to see if any packets are lost?

I have the same issue, however, only the upload speed is usually affected. My speed should be 50/50 and it recently tested at 50/1 . A few times, download speed will slow down a bit to around 35, but upload is primarily affected and is reuglarly below 15 at night during those times.

Yes. I run the speed tests thats how I came up with a loss of at least half of my download speed. Haven't run a traceroute test yet. How do I go about doing that. By the way, when I run the speed test off another location other then NYC, the speeds are normal.

I have the exact same problem. I have the 50/50 plan and during the hours of roughly 7-11pm my internet download speed goes to 5mbps, but upload speed remains more or less the same.

Yes. This appears to be a common problem. They are going to run some tests tomorrow during the slowdown hours and I will get back to you as soon as I have new information.

I'm experiencing the same issue as the OP. My speed is supposed to be 75/75. When FiOS is working normally it speedtests to 84/91. During evening peak hours (usually around 7-11, sometimes 8-12 or thereabouts), it decreases to 5/91. Pinging google.com 100 times shows me 4% packet loss. Pingtest.net shows me high pings and high jitter.

Things I've tried (and have failed to resolve the issue):

Releasing and renewing my IP address

Unplugging my router for 15 seconds, then turning it back on

Unplugging my ONT and disconnecting the battery, then plugging it back in and turning it back on

Switch from automatic DNS to OpenDNS, run connection tests, then back to automatic DNS

Every night since at least the 17th, possibly farther back and I didn't notice it.

Yes, more and more people are reporting this problem. It might help if you contact verizon technical support and register your complaint. The more people who report, the more likely hood that we will get a fix.

I myself was going to call Verizon customer service today after work about my speeds. I've been testing with the verizon speed tester and speedtest.net, and I get 5/25 on both when I'm paying for 75/75. I haven't even been on my computer for almost 2 weeks (so absorbed with Destiny on 360 lately) so I didn't quite notice, but it might explain why my connection keeps dropping. Some website connections time out or act as if I'm not connected to the internet, with no noticeable signal drops from the computer (or smartphone, as well), and I also have dropped ping requests to google.com.

Don't remember what time I tested the past two days but this is certainly aggravating. And I do not use Netflix either, so if this is part of the netflix throttling I have no idea why I'd be affected unless the network is being -that- bogged down by netflix users (yet I've never had problems like this before in the past year).

Do you know which server you are connecting to for your speed test?

I'm in DFW (in Plano, TX) and the speedtest.net connects to the Dallas server, the Verizon speed test connects to the Carrolton, TX server. Not sure of what specific domain name / IP though. Also it looks like you resolved this thread?

Well its obviously a network congestion issue that could possibly require increasing capacity. 7-11 is prime time for Internet usage.

Another regularly scheduled daily slowdown. It would be nice if Verizon popped in and said that they are aware of this issue affecting so many users across their network, and they have sprung into action and are hard at work on a fix, so that we can maintain normal speeds during peak congestion hours.

I have the same issue. Doing spped tests in the morning and it is 45mb download (still short of the 75mb I am supposed to get), then it gradually slows during the evening until it ends up at 8mb download and 45mb upload.

Same old sory story from tech, factory reset the router, reboot the outsde box, but it is the same every night. Their system doesn't appear to handle the evening load no matter what their fancy tv adds say.

I am cancelling fios and going bacl to xfinity/comcast. Never had this slowdown on comcast.

I have been happy with Verizon until the last couple of weeks. My 75/75 fios is now only delivering 2.3mbps download speeds. on the last visit the tech replaced everything but the wiring from the street to my computer. still the speeds are only 2mbps. This will be the fourth trouble ticket in 1.5 weeks. Upload speeds are always at 80mbps, great bout I am now a web server. I need the down load speed to be close to the upload speed.

Add me to the list. Been trying to fix this for several days. Tried everything from resetting ONT, resetting modem, reconfiguring settings using Verizon's auto configuration tool and shutting down computer / restarting. made sure no VoD was on sapping bandwidth.

Testing with Wired connection. Prime time, I'm supposed to have 150/150 service and getting 25/65. I feel really ripped off.

Wow, glad I saw this thread. I thought I was going insane. Have had 3 hours on Monday and a few on Thursday with Verizon on this issue. Have a service tech supposedly coming out Tuesday. Have switched out routers and everything. It's extremely annoying to be paying for service that is down during peak times when I need it. Hopefully, they fix it soon. Wondering if I should still have the service rep come by. Does anyone know if there are good FIOS alternatives if they can't fix the problem soon. I'm at 150/150 normally but 3/150 when the problem comes for the 4 hours.

And we are slow again ! This is so frustrating. I did get some improvement by swapping out the ActionTek modem or it could just be a coincidence but still painful

Greetings. I have a message and then some comments to whoever may be viewing this. First the message! For those of us in Northern VA hopefully relief is coming. After dealing with the aforementioned slowdowns for the past two weeks I was finally able to talk to a support tech who informed me my trouble call tickets were bundled in with others in the area to help them troubleshoot a network outage. He informed me they started working to repair the issue this today it should take a "couple of days." He signed me up for text notifications for when the repair is completed.

Fingers Crossed! Now for my comments:

- For you guys having slow downs during peek hours try running the detailed network analyzer during off peak hours frequently and I think you will be surprised that you will commonly get lost packets, however, because your speed is so high you may not notice but the issue is sitll there. For example, your 75/75 might become 35/75. 35 down with packet loss is good enough for most but once you start doing something that is sensitive to the loss it becomes painful. Point being and this is important for Verizon, the issues exsist all day, not just during peek hours.

- TO VERIZON - Your customer service really insulted me and let me down. When i first reported the issue I offered a very detailed analysis as to what was going on along with the troubleshooting steps I took. I am a network engineer and I am pretty good at what I do. Your techniicians insulted me by informing me my internet speeds where slow because I am in "power user" that uses too much bandwidth. You also told me it runs slow because I use Netflix on 2 TV's. I nicely tried to explain to your techs how bandwidth works I was insistently told I was wrong. I was then told my router was bad and you guys would have to send me a new router. You sent me the new router and it did not fix it. You then told me to upgrade my speeds to fix it, which I also did, and it did not fix it. (To the community, the reason I upgraded is because I thought maybe Verizon was aritificially limiting me because I was on a 15/15 plan and use netflix, crazy I know but it's not unheard of.) Lastly you told me you had to send a tech to my house at a great deal of expense to me to fix the issue. I reluctently agreed only to have the tech never show up and I did not even receive a phone call as to why.

During this whole ordeal I contacted Xfinity and they offered me 25/5 for 29 or 39 dollers a month. With this offer in hand I tried to work something out with Verizon and it was no good. They wouldn't even entertain dropping the price. They kept telling me Xifinity is a party line, non reliable internet, etc. I tried to inform them your internet doesn't function and I have the data to prove it. Obviously, this argument was met with nothing.

Luckily for Verizon I couldn't make the switch to Comcast. We are an internet only household (Netflix, Hulu, Amazon etc) and I am not happy with the way Comcast is implementing caps and charging fee's in certain areas. Verizon knows this and this is why I can only assume I was as mistreated as I was.

What are my options for recouping the time I spent on the phone with Verzion being mistreated? What are my options for getting a refund for the weeks my internet service has not functioned properly? What are my options for getting a greatly reduced monthly bill or have an option to possibly rollback to my old plan?

Not sure I will get a reponse, but I at least wanted to post since I know it will be read.

Here's my typical night here in Northern VA. As you can see, not even 5% of what I pay for. They've been working on this issue now for well over two years.....I'm not holding my breath. They say that to all the frustrated customers, but NEVER EVER fix it. Why? Because they know there is no other alternate service provider option, at least not here in my Lowes Island area neighborhood.

So, Verizon failed to show up with the Technician today, after confirming last night they would arrive.Live chat gave me a general suggestion box email so I can suggest they notify people before they wait the day for techs to not arrive.....

Apparently they do think this is a general issue now and claim it will be resolved in 24-48 hours.

"This is a nationwide peering/routing issue that was intentionally created by Verizon to create congestion and (1) extract priority fees from the likes of Netflix and (2) get customers to subscribe to higher speed tiers. This has been acknowledged by the FCC. Verizon is building new interconnections to remedy the problem, but it will persist for at least another 6 months."

Well whatever, when I don't get even 5% of the speed I pay for, then we do have a breach of contract. Moreover, there are several of us in this area reporting the same problem and now banding together. We have discussed also going to our local TV stations here in Washington DC to make the case. This is the kind of story reports love: Big Company Sticks it to the little guys.

wow @headhunter, that's pathetic. file a complaint with the FCC. this is a known issue and it's verizon's infastructure. they're providing bad peering/congested routes and keep signing customers onto services that they can't even support for them because of the upgrades that are needed to support the mass amount of people already using the service. it's the same thing that happened with netflix last year but on a higher more nation wide scale that's affecting all services.

The posted is probably not related to any peering congested problem. It instead looks like a problem that Verizon definitely will have to look at. Perhaps his ont (several have had that problem) or the equipment at the local verizon location.

there's over 25,000 reports of this nation wide already and that's only the people that have noticed and taken initiative in running tracert's/speedtests/linequalitytests, who knows how many more average internet consumers that have no idea something is wrong let alone run those tests at peak times. verzion responded to the FCC and is taking blame for this issue but they're doing so in the dark because they don't want the bad press after what happened with netflix last year.

A little test to prove that the issue is not in my house: Here is my speed at approx 6:45 PM on 4 FEB (below). I'll repost with what my speed is a little later on during prime time hours. If the pattern holds (as it has since late 2013), we'll be down to somewhere between 1 and 5 Mbps at around 9PM.

You guys are having problems getting credit? I haven't had any issues now that I've had validation from multiple techs that it is a city-wide problem in my area (Inland Empire, CA), which is probably the least they can do.

I go from 50/50 from midnight to around 630pm where it gradually descends and tanks at around 730pm to 5 Mbps download max. Upload is almost always preserved. Very frustrating. I've spent 8+ hours on the phone with tech support and have had four techs out.

Oh it's definitely not your house. As several techs and their own customer service reps in level 2 and 3 have confirmed that their network needs to be upgraded but they probably won't. In fact the rep I spoke with actually stated I might be better off getting a new provider... I said thanks for the honesty but they still won't let me out of my agreement and they also acknowledged they won't be upgrading it because it's too costly (that came from a tech scheduled to come out to my house) so I put in my FCC complaint and I got my credit for loss of service but not much more I can do.

I think I'm going to have to try the FCC route too, as there does not seem to be any way to get Verizon to fix this issue. Simply unconcionable that I am paying for something and the company KNOWINGLY does not deliver. And they also KNOW that I have no other options for internet service (at least not good ones), and so they have absolutely no desire to fix the issue. Shameful, indeed.

So I signed up for this service a few years ago.
A company is paid by FCC to monitor and report on broadband.

As part of their monitoring, you get a monthly report on the state of your conenction.

Mine is generally good. May get one report a day (testing is hourly) of slow performance but the slwoest I have seen for the month of Jan is 28M (I have 50/50).

The way it works is that they put a rotuer on your site and it reports to them.

This is happening in Northwestern Montgomery County MD too. When I check speed in the morning, it is great: getting about 90+ for both download and upload speeds when connected to ethernet. When checking speed on wifi, the speed is about 35/35. However, during the day time and especially during the weekend and night time, it is so slow. The speed test is giving me something below 5mbp for download (even with ethernet connection), and about 25 mbp for uploads. I just noticed this, so I don't know how long this has been going on. I hope they resolve this issue soon. I will be calling the customer service tomorrow to report the issue.

I've been having the same exact problem as well. However, what some of you didn't notice yet is that when you get the slow speeds you also get packet loss, high pings, and slow videos. I've had this problem for the past years and Verizon doesn't want to fix it because they're cheaping on. All they have to do is probably upgrade their servers. What is happing is that when there's a lot of traffic Verizon's servers can't handle it so they start having problems. I have my forum post here, you can take a look. Also, the problem is not coming from your end, it's from Verizons end. I'm 100% sure.

I was lead down the path of a possible duplex mismatch, but either Verizon is either purposefully throttling internet, or they have a problem they are either unwilling or unable to resolve.

Verizons network can't handle the traffic at peak times, they need to upgrade their network to fix this issue. BUT, they're too cheap to do so. I've had 2 Verizon technicians, and a level 3 network team technician tell me that they know about the problem but they doubt they'll upgrade their network anytime soon. Consider switching to another provider at this time.

I've had this problem but just in the last couple days (since 3-7-2015, DC/VA area). Packet loss has gotten so high that basic websites have difficulty loading and good luck with video. It gets worse in the 7-11 pm period but each day since Saturday the 7th it's been progressively worse at all hours. So while peak EST times are really bad, even my mornings are starting to suffer now.

Starting to seriously consider another ISP except if my local options are Comcast and worse... well. It's great being a local monopoly, isn't it?
