Actiontec MI424WR DLNA Problems

I am hoping someone can help me.

My problem started when I switched from an Actiontec 9100EM

What happens is basically I can not stream anything from wireless to wired connections or vice versa.

I am able to temporarily fix this by going into setup-Advanced-Yes-IP Address Distribution and change it from DHCP Server to one of the other options and then change it back and all works, until the connection resets

I have tried every setting I can think of, and was thinking maybe I need to reflash the firmware to fix it?

Any help would be appreciated

I just wanted to let everyone know that I called Verizon this evening and they were of no help - "Try sending an email to the address that is listed somewhere on the website" (which even the technical support rep couldn't find). I did, however, find the solution to this problem!

Any of the two options DHCP Route or Disabled, then you switch it back

Yes but it is an ethernet only router no wifi, this setup worked fine on the last router

I am not sure it is either when the lease expires or when I take the device off of wifi.

Why do you think this is a DLNA problem?

I can use teamviewer (logmein pc) from phone to pc, I can stream Wired connection to wired connection, wireless to wireless

I can see the other computers on my network to transfer files even wireless connections

I can not use DLNA from Android or DLNA from Iphone.

If I connect old router (which had other issues) I can then stream to Android and Iphone.

I will test it with the other router unplugged.

Ok I can Stream

From Laptop (Win7) to Android

From Laptop (WinXP) to Android

From Laptop (Either) to Wired Desktop (W7) this ended up not working except when plugged in

But not from Wired Desktop to Android, unless I do the little fix everytime I want to stream

Hi,

I've been spending the past day or so trying to figure out why my desktop connected to the wired LAN on the Actiontec MI424WR Rev. E cannot detect my PS3 on wireless using DLNA and vice versa. I have tried both PS3MediaServer and Windows Media Player to no avail. I played around with all the setting on the router including firewall and UPnp but something seems to be blocking the visibility of the two devices.

I later found out that I was able detect the PS3 on my laptop over wireless, but if I switch over to wired LAN on the laptop it will no longer be able to detect the PS3 as well.

Thankfully, when I found this support thread I tried changing the IP Address Distribution setting of the DHCP service to Disabled, and my desktop auto-magically appeared on my PS3! (Looks like applying any changes to this particular setting will have the same effect, per OP)

Since this is the only thread I can find searching the Internet that actually references my problem, I'm wondering if anyone else have similar problem with this particular router.

Yes this is exactly my issue, but has the fix worked continually? My problem is with Mobile Phones so as I leave the wifi and come back it does not recognize it again...

Recently had the exact issue with PS3 Media Server on a wired PC no longer being able to see our wirelessly-connected PS3.

Has anyone figured out a more permanent fix than having to do this every time we want to stream to the PS3?

I am having the same problems but I can not stream my dlna diskstation through the wifi part of the router. The wired works fine for me. I had a asus 56U that worked perfect except it would not give me the full upload speed so verizon sent me this router that works great full my full 75 down and 35 up speeds but now my DLNA server will not work for my wifi devices. Any help from verizon or someone would be great.

You guys seem to have an interesting issue, I would be curious as to what actiontec has to say. They won't talk to you over the phone, but they will respond via their contact us form online.

Also having this problem. DLNA is working on the wired part of my network, but all of a sudden, about two weeks ago it just stopped working on the wireless side. Did Verizon do a firmware update maybe on these routers??? The IP address distribution "fix" described above SOMETIMES gives a brief fix. PLEASE someone help find a way to solve this!

I am also having the same problem with my wired desktop streaming to my PS3. I called verizon tech support a few weeks ago and told him I had narrowed the problem down to the router but he kept saying there was nothing wrong with the router. The temp fix works for me but I would like for something more solid.

Have you guys tried to give the devices a fixed address. I would think if it was a fixed address, and never changes, then you wouldn't have to worry about the time outs

I also have the same issue after being sent an Anctiontec MI424WR to replace an old failing Westell. The DHCP workaround usually works. I updated the router to the latest firmware version (40.19.22) and still experience the issue. I wrote Actiontec support and received the following response:

Please report your finding to Verizon then please. They would need to test the DLNA requests and then write new firmware if needed.

Does Verizon Support monitor this forum? If so, what kind of information do they need to help track this down? The failure symptom is that the PS3 does not see any DLNA devices until the above-mentioned workaround is performed. After the workaround all the DLNA servers (I have PCs and a streaming-capable home media array) show and and work until the PS3 is rebooted/looses its IP address.

I have the same problem as everyone else. I'm running minidlna on a NAS connected via ethernet. All PC's and media players on ethernet can see the minidlna service however all devices connected via wireless cannot see the service. I did the DHCP trick, which worked for a few hours. I have firmware verzion 20.19.8 on a rev E router. I tried downgrading firmware's to version 20.10.7.5 but I get a error message "bad file" or something like that.

Here are my details.

Configuration:

Sony BlueRay DVD player connected wirelessly
HP laptop connected wirelessly runs XP media center
XP desktop running SP3 hard wired
ActionTec router, MI424WR, with firmware 40.19.22. Model name is "MI424WR-GEN3I" and is "hardware revision" "I".

Observations

If the XP system and the Sony are plugged into the ActionTec, the Sony can see the media shared on the XP system.
The Sony sees the HP system and shared media without any problems. Both are wirelessly connected.
The Sony can ping the XP system.
The Sony can view the XP's webserver.
If have disabled the firewall on the XP system to no avail.
On the ActionTec under the UPnP, I have tried "Publish all WAN connections" to no avail.

The disabling the IGMP proxy did not resolve the problem for me.

Toggling the "IP Address Distribution" aka DHCP did. But, we will see for how long. I made the address assignment static. So we will see. I may have to try giving the DVD player a static address to see if that makes a difference.

So there is still something amiss. I am going to drop ActionTec an email and see what happens.

YES. Just started 2 days ago. Spoke with technical support for two hours and got nowhere.

I also tried the temporary fix. Turned dhcp on the router off and then on and Magic the dlna devices all appeared again on my mediaplayers. but they disappeared a few minutes after.

So Verizon said they will send me out a new router???

Has anyone had any luck fixing this problem. I really do not believe I need a new router but I need this issue solved

To recap. When I am plugged in Wired all DLNA (media servers) are available. When using wireless (which of course is most the the devices in the house). the mediaservers are not available.

Also for you techy's. the mediaservers that are Wireless are available (meaing if windows mediaplayer-server is running on a laptop it can still be seen.

IT is very strange and I would like to know what is going on.

This is pretty unbelievable. Got a new router today with 4.19.36 (was having an unrelated problem, they sent me a new router) and now IGMP Proxy settings are nowhere to be found.

This is unacceptable!

I believe I had the same issue and found a solution to the UPNP problem.

I tested with one wired PC and another wireless Laptop.

All I did was to connect my old E2000 (DDWRT equipped) router configured as wireless bridge repeater (UPNP is built into DDWRT) with the ActionTec Router and connect everything to the E2000.

Let us see when Verizon fixes the IGMP and UPNP issue with their FIOS router.

Enable IpV6, should fix it. It's on the Advanced page. At least it did it for me. My revue could not locate my LaCie UpNP share, as soon as I enabled the IpV6 it found it without issue.

I hooked up a Pioneer network receiver back in June and everything was fine until about 3 weeks ago. Did the fix to IMPG and everything was ok again. Now regardless of whether IPv6 is enabled or disabled, I cant access the receiver on any other devices (phones, ipad) anymore. Is there a fix for this or does verizon just enjoy making thier customers miserable? Anyone have any experience with Comcast? I am really just about done with paying more to get less and less.

So I also have my pc on wireless and ps3 hardwired and cannot communicate between the two. As soon as I put them both on wireless it works (but that's not what I want). I have the 4.19.36 firmware without the igmp proxy setting.

Called tech support and wasted an hour with them with no solution other than "if people are having success rolling back the firmware, you should too".

My Media Center on wireless PC is not able to see the tuner in HomeRun Prime. It is complaining that UPnP packets are not received. I tried the workaround of enabling IPv6 and that did not make any difference. I spent $80 for upgrading the router to get 802.11n so I could watch my HD channels in Media Center. It worked beautifully for a week until 4.19.36 update. Actiontec support said they have no plans to fix it. Verizon please put some fire under them.

I have to drag a long cable with my laptop instead of using wireless now. 😞

On the main forum this issue has been marked as solved. This issue is not solved at all since the MI424WR-Gen3i with firmware 4.19.36 still does not allow for IGMP Proxy to be disabled.

In order to get more exposure for technical help, I propose the motion for the techs/moderators to mark this issue as unsolved.

I spent a lot of time trying to figure this out. Isn't this a bug that Verizon should be fixing ASAP? This can't be intended behavior. Only once I figured out that it was a wired vs wireless issue was I able to find that other thread in this forum about the same issue. I'm good now, but what a frustrating problem.

I just noticed this morning that IGMP Proxy was enabled again. I didn't touch that setting. Is it possible it reverted back on its own or via a network command from Fios? Anyone else have it revert back? In general, will Fios be issuing a fix for this? No way it's correct that this is enabled by default and causes this kind of issues with DLNA.

Thanks for the direct link. I disabled IGMP proxy but my iTunes Home Sharing still disconnects after a few minutes? Do I need to disable the IGMP in the routing sections of Advanced Settings as well or something else?

I've got the MI424WR Rev E. and just recently streaming from my Windows 7 PC to my xbox stopped working. Had the same setup and router for almost a year and worked without issue.

Tried everything I could think of one Saturday afternoon to no avail. A call to verizon tech support didn't help either. Finally decided to get the router swapped at my nearest verizon store. Streaming worked fine when I first set it up, but to my surpise later in the evening it stopped working again.

Disabling IGMP Proxy as suggested in this thread immedietly fixed the issue. Thanks for the help!

I'm new to the forums and unfortunately finding where to create a new forum question has evaded me.

I'm trying to create a DLNA for home so I can stream my videos from my computer over the WiFi to my PS3, Xbox360, and WiFI Vizio TV, and mobile devices. The problem is I can't get the server (using Univerial Media Server) to find any devices. I've spent the past couple days browsing the forums and trying to find a solution, but so far nothing has worked. A lot of people have said disabling IGMP will fix the issue, but so far that alone hasn't resolved the problem. I did find another forum where someone mentioned disabling DHCP in the router, and when I did that I instantly saw my PS3 pop up as a renderer. It appears the problem is because my PC is connected directly to the router (MI424WR Actiontech), while my PS3 is connected over the wireless (downstairs). The connection from the ONT is MoCa and not ethernet. Since it appears the issue is with the wireless and DHCP from the Actiontech, I was considering purchasing another router and setting up a transparent bridge between the Actiontech and a Cisco/Linksys EA4500, but it appears Verizon nor Actiontech don't support it. Does anybody have any solutions to get this to work? If it's possible without using the Cisco, I'd prefer that, but anything at this point would be great. If you need more details I'll gladly provide them.

DHCP should have nothing to do with it. DHCP is just for dynamically configuring a device's network parameters to allow it to access your network. Wired v. wireless should have nothing to do with it either. To your network, a device is a device is a device. It's simply an IP address on your network.

Does your DLNA server show up on any of your devices (DLNA clients)?

Have you opened up the firewall to allow DLNA traffic on the PC that's running Universal Media Server? If you want to test whether it's a firewall blocking the traffic or not just turn your firewall completely off to test it. I'm referring to the software firewall on your computer, not the one on the router. The one on the router is the more critical one as it blocks unwanted incoming internet traffic. The one on your PC only blocks traffic flowing to/from that PC for other devices on your network. Just be careful if you have not secured your wireless network.

If that still doesn't fix it, before buying a new router I'd try a different media server. I'm using WMP on Windows XP. It simplifies things because WMP automatically modifies the firewall rules to allow DLNA for the devices you select. I've also had tversity working with no problems.

Hi I just wanted to update everyone.

Today, I tried to connect my DLNA to my android (the issue that started this thread), and I found it not working again... Once again it took me about 30 minutes to remember that the problem was this... I checked and somehow it did reset, and was now enabled again.. I disabled and everything works good!

Firmware: 20.19.8
