Can I use my router ?

Hello, I live in an apartment. Verizon installed the actiontec router and a zyxel internet router. I would like to use my apple airport just because I like the easy to understand interface. I would like to use the zyxel as a bridge to the airport (connected via ethernet cable.

Do I need the wifi activated on the actiontec? I don't have any dvr's . I also will disable the wifi on the zyxel.

Does anyone know how I can set up this configuration?

Why did they install a zyxel router for you? Never heard of Verizon doing that before.

Why would you bother bridging? Why not just replace the zyxel with the apple airport.

Of course you can just disable the actiontec wifi, would have been easier on your other post if you'd just given that option in the first place and also mentioned the zyxel.

As I mentioned I live in an apartment. The actiontec router is connected to the existing cable tv coax cable. The Zyxel is plugged into the telco jack. The routers are connected via ethernet cable. I believe verizon installed fios using this method so they do not have to rewire the apartments. If I can replace the Zyxel with my airport that would be preferable. I will give it a shot however the Zyxel is a DTM/VDSL modem / gateway.

Like you pointed out, the Zytel is VDSL modem/bridge from the MDU ONT. They appartmet was to difficult or the owner did not allow fiber to run to each unit. The COAX is run from the MDU ONT to the existing cable TV coax that now feeds your FIOS TV. Internet is VDSL over the phoneline where the ONT is located. Probably in a central closet or basement.

1. The Zytel provides your internet regardles, and will need to stay.

2. The STB for FIOS TV get's its IP and Guide data from the Internet through the COAX which uses MOCA from the Actiontec.

3. The Actiontec WAN is probably plugged into the Zytel.

4. If you want to use your router, you would still need to use the Actiontec to provide MOCA connectivity to your TV STB.

5. Do a search here on the forums for information regarding using your own router. There is tons of information about the subject. But you would still need the Zytel and a way to provide MOCA to the TV STB. Some Nim-100 bridges are out there.

6. If you use your own router Verizon will not support it.

7. If you turn off wireless on the Actiontec and use your wireless router to the LAN on the Actiontec, you would not be changing the configuration, but the PCs will not be able to talk with the STB.

8. If you use your router connected to the Zytel and the Actiontec connected to your router, You will not be able to access the STB remotely if you have a DVR.

9. Remember Verizon can not support every custom router configuration. If you change the default configuration you will have trouble if you call for Verizon support. You will need to place everything back to the origional installed configuration.
