Replacement Modem ? Free ?

I have a Westell modem from year 2000 when i first got verizon DSL. Can I replace my old modem with the newer model modems verizon now have for free? And how do i request this, is there a section on website for this replacement plan. Thanks for any help.

If you ask Verizon nicely, they might send you another modem. The only thing that may need to be done is if you are using a very, very old Westell Wirespeed modem (perhaps with the old Bell Atlantic logos on it). Those tend to be old Frame Relay modems that are not compatible with the newer DSL network which uses the ATM network. If they will not send a modem for free, you're always free to go pick up any modem that supports ADSL or to get one directly from Verizon. ADSL2+ modems are preferred.

I read somewhere that I could replace my old Westell modem, Model#6100. The one I have since 2000 seems to working as slow as my old Dial-up was. Can anyone tell me where I can pick up a newer modem? I was told that there were newer ones that were labeled as ADSL and ADSL2. True or false? I'm a retired telephone employee with 37 years service and have been retired for 10 years now. I started when it was New England Telephone & Telegraph and then we became New England Telephone, then we became NYNEX, next it was Bell South, and finally VERIZON. Could someone help me find out where to go? It seems when you try to get to the service support you end up at billing. HELP!!!!!!!!!

I have been having a lot of problems with slow connection this week. I also have the 6100 and was assuming it was the modem until I read that others are having a problem. Not sure where to go with this, I also tried to contact verizon but got sales dept. which was no help.

Like I mentioned above, all you need to do is ask. Honestly if the connection is slow, I would take more measures to troubleshoot the problem than just replacing the modem. You'll more than likely wind up with another 6100, or you'll get a 7500 and it will probably not improve anything.

I've done the power down everything, etc, and doesn't seem to help.

Log into the Westell at http://192.168.1.1/ from any PC and then do the following, based on what you see.

1: If you see a Red and Black Verizon page with a bunch of information on it, click on the System Monitoring at the top navigation and then choose Advanced Monitors on the Left hand side Navigation. Press Yes past the prompt if any appears, and then choose Trasceiver Statistics.

2: If you see a Blue and White Westell page, select Troubleshooting, DSL, and then choose DSL/Transceiver Statistics.

Provide the Information you see there by copying and pasting it. It will contain information such as Attenuation, Margin, Power Level, and show the modem speed.

Should you be asked for a login, try the following:

Your Verizon Username and Password

The information I'm asking for here will let me see how your line is running. If the physical loop is OK, we'll have to check into other things. In the past, Verizon tech support agents used to ask for this information over the phone to verify how a line was operating, even though they could probably pull it up from the equipment on their end. Lately it seems that many of the agents no longer ask for this information for whatever reason (either they cannot see it, or are not trained to do so) but it's often a great place to start when slow speeds and disconnects are occurring.

I ran both speakeasy and Verizon's speed test this morning,getting avg of .19 download and .26 upload. the first time I ran the Verizon speed test, My DSL is supposed to be "up to" 1.5, at least that's what I pay for.

In doing the Westell check you mentioned, just now, about 4 hours later, I got blue and white screen, under troubleshooting transciever stats the following:

Note down the times in which you notice the speed going down, and from there, go back to the same "Advanced Monitoring" page that I pointed out above, however instead of going to the Transceiver Statistics, go to the System Monitoring section and open the log from the "Connection" category. Your statistics aren't the greatest so I have a feeling you might be dropping on the physical connection.. You can paste up the log either in a forum post via Copy and Paste, or you can paste the log to http://www.pastebin.com/ if you get an error stating the post is too lengthy. If you go the Pastebin route, please provide the URL to your post.

Yes, but how to get access to it depends on many different factors.
