SLOW speeds through ALTER.net

i am getting terrible speed to any site that goes through ALTER.NET router.

i am in California is anyone else having this issue?

how do you go about complaining to a backbone provider?

alter.net is Verizon Business. You can try reporting the problem on phone or chat, but otherwise try Twitter support should you have an account. Not sure how far you'll get. The trick to this though is to see if the problem exists anywhere else besides at and beyond a customer.alter.net hop, since these are not actually peering points, but are locations where someone buys bandwidth from Verizon. In this case, Comcast pays to connect to Verizon's network, and the problem router is actually the border router between Verizon and Comcast. That router if it's not at capacity, could be simply saturated due to Comcast not buying enough bandwidth. Verizon being a Tier 1 provider should be giving that router enough bandwidth to not choke out on the Verizon end, although that can and does happen as well for high traffic periods.

Try some other sites that do not hit Comcast's network and see if they perform better or worse. If we can find a common point across several different traceroutes, that will help us out a bit more.

Otherwise, there are ways to find and report an issue to a Backbone provider, however most will not take a problem with high priority for a single user calling or e-mailing in. If the ISP calls on behalf of a user however, the operations center if they're not already aware of a problem will listen closely, and work with the ISP in question to resolve the issue.

I'm having the same issue also in Cali. Me and a friend are having major voice lag issues on Ventrilo, he's also on Comcast.

Yes I too have my concerns how Verizon Business, may be handling Verizon Online (FiOS) (DSL) traffic at some points. There should be no choke points on their own networks, and when there are, it is fixed. But even here in Maryland, Verizon and Comcast do not play nice. Even after all those wireless spectrum bandwidth deals. Smiley Mad

I noticed 3 routes that Fios have trouble with lately:

tinet, telia and alter

When I flash back I think these are the same routes that had issues before. I'm not entirely sure, hopefully I'm gonna find my past tracerts and provide some more info tomorrow.

I don't know, doesn't seem as bad here and doesn't seem good either. When I check my present tracerts, all those routes perform same as few months back - crappy.

Btw I think the reason why my alter.net performs better is because I'm in New York.

Something changed.

ping times improved and traceroute thought the same path has improved.

i will keep and eye on it but at least i can work from home again!!!!
