Static IP

I need a static IP to run a FTP server so I can access my files when I'm elsewhere.

How do I get one as a residential customer? Is it even an option? I'm even willing to pay for it, but for amount I'm already paying for service, I'm think it's justifiable it should be an option?

You have to sign up as a business customer to get a static IP address.

Or you can got to http://www.dyndns.com/ it allows you to set up a URL and you download a program/windows service that uploads your IP to their servers to update you dynamic IP to the servers every day. It will change your IP to a URL,. (ie external IP xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx to something like ftp.dyndns.com) It is even part of the fios router options so I know it is allowed. It is a very issue setup.

Believe it or not, the Actiontec router, which I LOVE btw, has support for DYNDNS

It will actually do the connection updates with their service if your address changes

I would rather use their software behind my double routers which works. Opening anything on an external connection to the Internet is risky. I have used the software to register my IP. Then the Actiontec forwards a non standard port to my internal router which uses a standard port to a PC. This way if anyone scans all ports on my IP, they will see a strange non standard port open, and not know what it is. Harder to hack a port if you have no idea what is on it. Then you just include the :with port number at the end of the URL for your network when you connect. Just some security sugestions that I use, and I think it has helped keep people out. Also let the Actiontec router block inbound ICMP trafic. If someone can ping your IP they know something is there.
